Subject: The Real Era of 90s Nostalgia Begins...?

Finesse
The spread of R&B throughout the Top 100
90s show revivals

Am I alone in believing that true 90s nostalgia is finally revving up?

But overall the 2010s has been VERY 80s centric. Far more 80s nostalgic than any time in the 2000s.

they have been more 90s centric actually

Power Rangers movies
Beavis and Butt head
Girl Meets World
Fuller House
90s fashions scaled down
SNES mini

2000s had

80s samples used in songs
Vh1 I love the 80s
GTA vice City
Gwen Stefanis album was a 80s throwback
return of flashdance style fashion with waist belts
surreal Life
anything on vh1 was 80s
Mostly 80s shows were on Nick at Nite like whos the boss
That 80s show
Donnie Darko

Yeah I see way more people talk about the 90s than the 80s in the 2010s. Most adults nowadays are nostalgic about the 90s heck even vanilla ice clams the 90s the last great decade but in the 200s the 90s were seen as basic.

Those things I feel are surface level nostalgia. I'm not necessarily referring to people talking about things from a certain time. It's kind of hard to explain. I feel like this board is overly obsessed with youth culture and is seemingly oblivious to how older generations continue to influence the overall culture. I'm convinced gen x and the Jones generation are really in the driver seat right now, as opposed to younger millennials and/or gen z.

2010s music (with the exception of trap...or maybe not, trap music is often referred to as the hair metal version of rap) is more related to the 80s than the 90s.

It
80s inspired hipsterdom
Reawakened tensions with Russia
Shut Up and Dance With Me
Ready Player One
Drive
Glow
Stranger Things
Heavy use of synth and electronica in the mainstream
Donald Trump
80s inspired movies like Guardians of the Galaxy (there's enough 70s stuff to make to miss the overall 80s feels) and Thor Ragnarok
Super 8
Evil Dead
The popularity of Black Mirror's San Junipero

But despite all of this...I don't think lists really convey my idea. lol

I actually don't remember much if any 90s hate back in the 2000s. In fact, a lot of people I knew mourned the passing the of the 90s.

I remember in 2008 there was an episode of Phineas and Ferb that was about robots. The robots made places to get coffee and Phineas said "That's so 90s".
I met In 2009 a guy born in 1980 who thought that things went downhill after 1996.

I actually agree with OP here who's saying that the 2010s have mostly been 80s nostalgia based.  Most of my friends at school only talk about the 80s, their parents talk about the 80s, etc.  OP also provided some very good examples when it comes to the media.  People at my school like 90s fashion more than they like 80s fashion, but I think the 2020s will be the time when 90s nostalgia becomes a lot more mainstream.

Yeah, I agree with OP. In pop music, the early-mid 2000s had lots of 70s based samples and 2010s saw a revival of 80s synths. Maybe true 90s nostalgia will bring boom bap or house 2.0 to the mainstream in the 20s? R&B has been popular since the 90s, so I wouldn't say its an example of any sort of 90s revival.

I think 90s nostalgia just "kinda" started, we're still only seeing some aspects of it enter our pop cultural sphere, but in reality we're far away from that 90s attitude/pop culture lol. The most 90s nostalgia we've had so far is Gen X or older millennial reminiscing about it.

That was when the whole 90s kid thing started to happen where 90s nostalgiatards would bash people who didn't expirience the 90s especially the 2000s kids.

I found some interesting stuff on Google Trends by checking which decade's music has been searched for the most from 2004-present, I used the words music and songs separately to see if there were any differences and there were.

https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=60s%20music,70s%20music,80s%20music,90s%20music,2000s%20music

https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=60s%20songs,70s%20songs,80s%20songs,90s%20songs,2000s%20songs

I checked it for the last 12 months as well, and it seems like 90's and 80's music/songs are about equally searched for.

in terms of reboots of classic tv shows it leans more 80s, but in terms of nostalgia  I hear more people talk about the 90s particularly in the hip-hop community  where the 90s was regarded as the best decade of hip-hop.  90s nostagla has been going for almost a decade now, with the pokemon  community missing genoration 1, wwe pandering to the attitude era fans,  kids wearing nirvana shirts, NWA striaght outta Compton, kids wearing nirvana shirts, Youtubers constantly bringin up the 99s, etc. Since 2010 i been seeing a massive wave of 90s nostagla especially on Youtube.

Facts, the 90s were seen as recent in the 2000s because a lot of trends from the 90s carried over to the 2000s.

I don't think it's necessarily that OP means that 90s nostalgia hasn't started so much as they mean that it'll become a lot bigger within the upcoming few years.  I think opinions will differ on this, but I personally have seen a lot more 80s remakes and reboots in pop culture - this decade has definitely had 90s nostalgia, but I believe that 80s nostalgia has been bigger, and I think that's what OP means as well.

I don't think that hip hop "coming back" is an example of peak 90s nostalgia. Hip Hop has always been massive, I mean where were you in the 00s? Also, Grunge music hasn't had a comeback at all, it hasn't charted since '95. No idea what VICE has to do with Seattle rock & roll either... I mean there is definitely 90s nostalgia in the air, but the 80s' influence is very obvious this decade.

What are u talking about Grunge 100% came back into fashion this decade in smaller silloutes

Flannel, Doc martins, Overalls....... as well as florals, Nirvana Shirts at h&m
You know those white sunglasses  Lil Yachty wears those are the  "cobains"

Vice look, ver grungy looking website, if you watch their docs it has a very gritty look to it

As for the rap this decade, rap has taken 90s samples, and people like Kendrick Lamar and TDE started a sort of mini Death Row
type of aspect to their team with SZA and Jay Rock

I could make more lists referencing 80s culture in the 2010s but I'm not interested in such a mindnumbing competition. And, yes. I know 90s nostalgia has been here, but the 80s has made a far deeper mark on this decade than the 90s. I remain convinced of my position. You remain convinced of yours.

But for the audience,

I'm not referring to surface level nostalgia. Well, I guess I kind of am but there are levels of the types of nostalgia I'm referring to. All the things Titor listed are easy picking. It's what a 90s kid who's not really a 90s kid would list. 80s culture has influenced 2010s culture in a more "spiritual" way.

I have to say I am not a huge fan of reboots and nostalgia fads.  In small doses they can be enjoyable but I think it's currently been way overdone.  In fact '90s nostalgia is somewhat ruined for me because it's been so over-exploited this decade.  I really hope they don't do the same thing with the 2000s in the '20s.

Yeah. The thing with today's 90s nostalgia is that it's more indicative of 2010s reboot phenomenon (possibly pop culture decline) than nostalgia that truly influences culture.

You still have not posted examples of 80s nostalgia overtaking 90s in the 2010s
and continue to say I am wrong despite not showing examples why I am wrong

I have to say I am not a huge fan of reboots and nostalgia fads.  In small doses they can be enjoyable but I think it's currently been way overdone.  In fact '90s nostalgia is somewhat ruined for me because it's been so over-exploited this decade.  I really hope they don't do the same thing with the 2000s in the '20s.

I agree. This is becoming obnoxious. I'd hate for the 2000s to suffer the same fate.

2000s nostalgia has barely made a dent on this decade. I think you've (or it may have been someone else, can't remember) made posts in the past claiming that 2000s fashion made a comeback. It hasn't and there have only been small hints of 2000s nostalgia.

Why?

Because I think that they're right, whoever suggested that 90s nostalgia will come first. I'm seeing a lot of women in "health goth" outfits around here.

haha. That was me and I know what you're talking about. 90s looking goth/punk has been spreading lately. I actually really like the look but then again, I actually like 2010s fashion with the exception of the manbun.

So for TV shows, and some movie reboots (ignoring all other reboots from earlier decades) you're absolutely right, plenty of 90s nostalgia. But for fashion and music, it's a stretch.

You can also get ACDC and Led Zepplin shirts in H&M, does that mean we're in peak 70s nostalgia? In any case most of these discussions are useless, fashion and music trends are still very regional. I would say flannel, doc martins, and floral aren't so much grungewear as they are a sign of how big hipster-inspired fashion is. Grungewear is completely differnet, it's buying oversized clothes at a thrift shop and consisted of lots of layers, we haven't seen that comeback in the mainstream at all.

Hip Hop samples from all decades, but the majority are still 60s/70s soul and R&B. A few hits contain 90s samples doesn't mean we're in peak 90s nostalgia.

In any case I hope pop culture becomes unique.

The manbun is the only reason I'll tolerate 2010s fashion. Otherwise, it's almost like they've phased out long hair on guys this decade, which really annoys me.

But despite all of this...I don't think lists really convey my idea. lol
Yeah I feel this way with the 2000s too when it comes to 80s nostalgia, because while 80s nostalgia was more spoken of on a surface level, it felt like there was overall more nostalgia for the 70s, especially around 2004 when Anchorman was released, ponchos came back in style and flare jeans were still popular, and a decent amount of 70s revival that got mostly overshadowed by the sheer surplus of crunk rap dominating the radio, with Raven-Symone's cover of Grazin' in the Grass (the original version was featured in Anchorman, it actually came out in 1968 but is more associated with the 70s) and Jesse McCarthy's Get You Shine On, which was contributed to the Fat Albert soundtrack).

One thing that feels really 80s about this decade is the rise of a new yuppie culture, mostly in the form of hipsterdom. A good example would be all of these new shopping centres and condos going up in many major American cities full of "artisan" places mostly aimed at upper middle class and above. There seems to be a lot of fads revolving around look sleek and more classy, whereas the 90s and 00s fashion seemed to be a lot more individualist in certain regards.

My god, THANK YOU. You get it.

Plus, I like things that look more sleek and classy but even I'm getting tired of the lack of individualism.

Definitely. I think full on real 90s nostalgia has been a thing since 2017 but I don't know if it's truly hit its stride yet. It looks like it is getting there tho.
