When I think 2013 I think Harlem Shake! This one was from my brother's university (he's in the video). I'm not linking mine for privacy reasons but it was so much fun filming it ;D

Greatest year for movies of this decade, period. Horrible year for my personal life though.

One thing I'm nostalgic about of 2013 is the hype around the PS4 and Xbox one. I still remember it like yesterday when Youtubers were constantly fighting over which is the better console.

I see you were born in 2004!  2005-born here, I loved 2013 as a year!  It was a great year, really.  I was 8 for most of it, but I remember all the music that came out that year.  I was a huge pop fan (my tastes have become more developed.)  I always hung out with my friends afterschool.  2013 was such a great year for my personal life, and I think it was a great year as a whole.  2014 was alright.  I hated 2015 and 2016 - worst years in my personal life so far! I'll never forget the negative and cynical political atmosphere of 2016. 2017 was pretty great, my music tastes broadened, made more friends, had a lot of happy days and I think I became very self-aware that year (I'm still self-aware this year.)  2018 has been okay for me so far.  I'm happy, but not in the childish, always-smiling way I used t be.  I'm genuinely happy now.  School keeps getting tougher.  I think 2018 and 2019 are going to be great years for film.

Yeah i miss 2013 i was 9 early 2013 was the best of my personal life and 2012-2013 was one of the best school years i used to hangout with my friends at school all the time we used to talk about Video Games alot. I do kind of remember the music came out that year but as a 9 year old i didnt really listen to music or pay attention as i do now. And you're not the only one i didn't like 2015 either i got in a fight and lost which i deeply regret, called my friend fat which i also regret and starting middle school luckily 2016 was an improvement from that but middle school wise didnt make it better and i remember the political atmosphere in 2016 and i remember being in the living room watching election while my family was sleep  ;D. 2014 was the last and i mean LAST great year for me personal wise because it was the last year of my core childhood so i miss 2014 also. 2017 was also great too i turned 13 and i was happy since i was finally teenager my cousins came over every weekend that year. 2018 has been pretty good just moved and going to a new school.
Sorry for the long paragraph  ;D. Its nice to discuss personal years in the 2010s with someone who is also 1 year apart from me  :)

Oh wow I have a nephew born in 2005. It's crazy that you guys are becoming teens this year. I remember him being in diapers. I have pretty fond memories of 2005 I was 8 halfway through 2005 so it's weird that I was 8 when you and wobo were babies and y'all were 8 when I was in High School.

God I miss being 12. 2013 was probably the last year of me being a fairly innocent child. I remember me and my friends used to hangout after school to do the dumbest things. Like one time I remember my friend finding a bowling ball and coming up with the "genius" idea of smashing stuff with it. He climbed up a tree WITH the bowling ball (looking back now I have no idea how he did it) and dropped it on random toys that we found in the park. We did that all afternoon.

2013 is the core of The 2010’s, a lot of good music came out that year, since “Royals”, “Counting Stars” to “Wake Me Up”, also amazing video games like GTA 5, The Last of Us and Gone Home. As well as virals as YOLO, SWAG and The Harlem Shake. Culturally the most iconic year of this decade

I went to Mexico that summer to visit my moms family. We had amazingly delicious Mexican dishes. My favorite was the Quesadilla and Enchiladas. We went to Puerto Vallarta. The city was absolutely beautiful; palm trees, blue water, a beautiful beachfront. It is everything you could ask for in a beach. It was like heaven.

For video games, I think of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Injustice, and Battlefield 4.

2013 was the absolute best year of my life. It was my last year of elementary and the graduation was amazing. We did the Harlem shake and the Gangnam Style on the last day of school and it turned out to be one of the best days of my life. The pop culture of 2013 was great too. I loved the songs Get Lucky, Suit & Tie, Body Party, Come & Get It, Hold On We're Going Home, etc. I remember playing ROBLOX with my friends every single day in the summer of 2013. It was so much fun. I'd also invite my friends over from school to my house and we'd hang out in my backyard during the summer. Sometimes, I'd even hang out by myself and it was still fun. If there's one year I'd like to go back to, I'd choose 2013 in a heartbeat. That year was amazing, from start to finish.

Subject: 2013 cultural debate: was it more early or mid-2010’s?

Written By: Rainbowz on 04/12/18 at 2:17 pm

I know a lot of people think that 2013 was transitional, including me. But do you think 2013 was culturally more early 2010’s or mid-2010’s?
I personally think early 2013 still felt somewhat like the early 2010’s, but just barely. Mid-2013 felt like the perfect mixture of early 2010’s and mid-2010’s, much like how 2009 felt like the perfect mixture of 2000’s and early 2010’s culture IMO. By late 2013 though, I’d say it was leaning towards mid-2010’s. I personally consider the 2013-2014 school year to be the first full cultural mid-2010’s school year, as that was when electropop had finally died and Snapchat was very popular. Also, Vine was at its peak during the 2013-2014 school year.

What do you think? Was 2013 more like the early 2010’s or mid-2010’s culturally?

Subject: Re: 2013 cultural debate: was it more early or mid-2010’s?

I agree, early 2013 still felt like 2011-2012, mid 2013 was a perfect mix of early/mid-2010s and late 2013 was when the mid 10s fully arrived.

Subject: Re: 2013 cultural debate: was it more early or mid-2010’s?

It was culturally transitional. Early 2013 still had electropop in the pop culture. Late 2013, on the other hand, was when the hipster fad took over.

Politically, 2013, on the other hand, was still early 2010's. Even though the Trayvon Martin incident and the Sandy Hook shooting already took place, it was still a world before the Crimean Crisis, Gamergate, the Michael Brown incident, and the rise of ISIS.

Subject: Re: 2013 cultural debate: was it more early or mid-2010’s?

Written By: bchris02 on 04/12/18 at 4:27 pm

It was transitional but it leaned mid '10s.  This opinion is unpopular but I actually think the transition began in 2012.  Macklemore's "Thrift Shop" for instance was popular in late 2012.  It's really hard to believe that song came out only one year after "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga.

Also, does anybody remember this song?

J_nziODUGcw

It came out in late 2012 and performed pretty poorly on the Billboard Hot 100.  Had this song come out in 2009 or 2010 it would have been one of the biggest hits of the year.

Regardless, the early '10s feel lingered as long as electropop and late '00s-style trap lived on.  Ke$ha was still big in early 2013 despite Gaga's absence.  I would say the early '10s were officially gone when ARTPOP flopped and that was during the fall of 2013.

Ah, crap. How do I take back my vote? I accidentally voted for mid 2010s. I think 2013 is more early 2010s. Rage comics were still popular and music was mostly early 2010s. There's no denying that some mid-late 2010s stuff like Vine and Snapchat starting getting popular in 2013. But again, a lot of stuff from the year just screams early 2010s for me.

I totally agree with this. The song "Clarity" by Zedd seemed to be the last hit song that had the early 10's sound (Euro EDM).

I'd say more mid 10s.
"Gangnam Style" was really the last big hoorah for the electropop era, and that was popular in Late 2012.
By summer of 2013, the electropop era was officially dead, as that's when Miley Cyrus made her comeback, and when Lorde made her debut.

Early 2013 is slight early 2010s but the mid-2010s were coming in fast.

Summer 2013 is kind of a mix, but I'll say leaning mid-2010s.

Late 2013 is undeniably mid-2010s, especially after Breaking Bad ended. That's honest the only early 2010s thing about the summer of 2013 lol.

2013 was a beautiful, amazing year. I wish my personal circumstances weren't so terrible then, that year would have easily been one of my favourites of all time.  :\'(

Snapchat came out in September 2011. However, it wasn't until late 2013 (Like probably October/November) was when I noticed Snapchat becoming popular, but this is just based on where I live and my memory, so it might be different worldwide.

IMO the 2012-2013 school year was the last school year that leaned more early 2010's. It was the last year most teens were using Facebook despite Instagram being quite big, but it wasn't until the next school year when Facebook was pretty much dead among teens and Instagram and Snapchat took over. It was the last hurrah for electropop, with songs like "Scream and Shout" and "Clarify". By late 2013, the mid-2010's seemed to be in full swing and it was clear we were in the mid-2010's by then.

I see 2013 the same way I see 2009. Both years were transitional, with the former being 2000's/early 2010's culture and the latter being early/mid-2010's culture. Similar to how late 2009 was when the early 2010's were in full swing, late 2013 was when the mid-2010's were in full swing. By late 2009, Facebook took over and Myspace was pretty much dead, and by late 2013, Instagram and Snapchat took over and Facebook was pretty much dead.

How is Facebook dead. In the 2013-2014 school year, everyone I knew in middle school at the time still used Facebook and it was still popular among teens.

Facebook is still popular with teens now. Sure, Snapchat and Instagram might be more preferred, and maybe Facebook is more of a lifestyle than a teen fad nowadays, but Facebook isn't dead.

When I said Facebook was dead, I meant dead among teenagers. It's mostly for grown-ups/adults now and the amount of teens on that website has gone down. Most of them moved on to Instagram now.

I'd say more like mid 2010's. With the release of Vine and Snapchat, end of Electropop era and the release of Xbox One and PS4. Hell, late 2012 already had some mid 2010's feels.

People also used instagram in 2013, i was in 4th grade in late 2013 and my classmates had instagram,i really never thought of that.

Well, like I said previously this is just based on where I live and my memory and it might not be the same worldwide.

When I said Facebook was dead, I meant dead among teenagers. It's mostly for grown-ups/adults now and the amount of teens on that website has gone down. Most of them moved on to Instagram now.

Everyone has a Facebook account. I notice how some teens keep there Facebook accounts up, but only use it every once in a while, or better yet, they deactivate it. To say it's completely dead among teens, which I know isn't what you meant, just isn't true. Many people around my age (13-19) post to it on a daily bases.

I totally agree with this. The song "Clarity" by Zedd seemed to be the last hit song that had the early 10's sound (Euro EDM).

I don't know.  "Clarity" sounded more mid '10s to me, more pure EDM than electropop.  I have a hard time seeing a song like that as being popular in the mainstream in 2011 or before.

Maybe what I should have said is that Facebook isn't really popular among teenagers as it was in say 2011. I know some teens still post on Facebook, but just based on my experience and memory, it seems like a lot of people my age have moved on to Snapchat and Instagram.

But it might be different where I live compared to you, that could probably explain why.

I'm gonna say slightly towards the mid-2010s, early 2013 could lean slightly towards to the early 2010s but, that's as far as I would go. It felt like the early 2010s were already coming to an end around late 2012.

I don't know why people are voting mid 2010s. 2013 was for the most part early 2010s up until the fall of that year. 2013 was a unique transitional year. Even though it was still part of the early 2010s (both numerically and culturally to an extent) I still enjoyed it because it was a unique and changeful year with great culture and my personal life was going great. Best year of the 2010s by far.

2013 felt more mid 2010s because it was the year of vine, Snapchat, instagram (which got popular in late 2012), and the death of the Electropop era.

Macklemore's "Thrift Shop" for instance was popular in late 2012.

Macklemore's Thrift Shop was NOT popular in late 2012. It got popular in early 2013, not 2012. Not to mention that song still leans early 2010s anyway. Really has nothing to do with the mid 2010s, nor does 2013 for the most part. The transition didn't start in 2012, but in 2013.

Yes I agree. Thrift shop even though it was released in 2012 was popular in 2013

That song sounds like the same style as "Titanium", which was from late 2011. EDM wasn't as popular in the mid 10's. I think mid 10's was actually more electropop like Demi Lovato than pure EDM like David Guetta.

I agree. The modern-day EDM actually started getting popular in 2016. The mid '10s had more actual electropop, although on the whole the mid 2010s had a lot less dance music altogether.

I definitely agree, I can easily imagine "Clarity" being popular as early as 2011. EDM has been popular for pretty much the whole decade.

The mid-10's culture started in the summer of 2013, when artists like Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, and Lorde were all over the airwaves, as well as "Blurred Lines". I didn't care for that song too much, but when we look back from further in the future I think Blurred Lines, Uptown Funk, and 24K Magic will be classified to be in same era.

I miss 2013 and early 2014 so much. It's just 4 to 5 years ago, yet it feels like ages ago to me. My life changed so much. Back then I was working in my home town in a small and friendly tech start up and was applying abroad for a master degree. Since then I've lived in 3 other countries. I miss how simple life was when you work in a small company, you get less benefits but also less drama and office politics. Such a great year. :)

I'm insanely nostalgic for 2013 and 2014 too. They were my senior high school/freshman college years. Its been a bit frightening this past year for them to both seem "distant" for the first time.

2013 and 2014 were the last good years of brainwave entertainment.

I have many years experience with binaural beats and the like YouTube videos. Tried them first in 2011 and later again in 2013. The quality since later half of 2014 has become worse. Until 2014 most of them were pure tones with some having also pleasant music.

But lately there has been a shift - most new offerings on YouTube promise everything - from making you a millionaire to changing your hair or eye color. Oh and there are ones promising to switch genders or even animal species. :D

Also the music pieces have become weird. Old binaural beats, isochronic tones, waves and Rife frequencies have better effect on me than the fancy new ones. Too bad YouTube search cannot ignore the post 2014 results.

I guess when brainwave entertainment became more popular after 2014, most YouTubers decided to cash in on views.

I got curious, and wanted to see what's on the Billboard this week.

wTev4S6k7Kc
Despite noticing the brief J Cole onslaught, I have to admit #34 screwed with my nostalgia a bit. So I went to see what was popular this week but 5 years ago:

vHF3v3IGaSs
...and I was quite shoked by the contrast. I completely forgot how many indie stuff was popular in 2013 despite following mainstream music very carefully since that very year.
I guess this was as a reaction against the electropop onslaught of the early 2010s to go a bit more acoustic. I mean even the EDM act of the year, Avicii, mixed his House with Folk elements.

Crazy how much can change in only 5 years time.

On that note, rip Avicii :\'(

That makes perfect sense. Also, 2013 along with 2014 was when the whole hipster/organic movement really peaked, which I think had a huge influence on music.

Yeah, plus one of the biggest hits of the year was Thrift Shop which is a straightforward love letter to hipsterism.
