Subject: Best Buy to stop selling CD's

Written By: Star Struck on 03/03/18 at 2:37 pm

I was wondering what your guys thoughts on this? CD's were a huge part of my childhood. I remembered in 5th grade when my brother taught me how to make a mix CD. I had a lot of my favorite songs. Anyways, here is the story:

Not sure. I heard Target might follow in the same direction as Best Buy in the near future too. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Do you think people still buy CD's too?

Btw, thanks!  :)

I'm pretty sure within the next couple of years or so, electronic stores may not be selling CDs anymore, maybe it's because of the changing of the times.

In my town there's a small independent shop that sells CD's and there's Tesco and that's pretty much it. It's a shame I think as I love buying physical media.

Whaaaaat?? So weird seeing something I used throughout my life so much die. People still have a lot of CDs laying around though, so it'll take a while before they become completely, VHS tapes level dead. Maybe 2030-ish? But I don't believe physical CDs will ever go away though since gaming consoles still use them.

Usually, CDs are absurdly more expensive at your local supermarket or electronics store than they are on iTunes. Many cars, such as my current one, don't even have CD players anymore. Really, the only reason to buy a CD nowadays is if you can get a bargain at a used music store.

Honestly, I've been going to Best Buy less and less over the last couple of years, so their decision to stop selling CD's barely effects me at all. Not to mention, they generally have a pretty crappy selection of music. I mostly go to my local music store to get my music and movies. I still believe in the tangibility of physical media. I like that sense of ownership and the fact that if I want to watch or listen to something, I can do it anytime I want to. Streaming services to NOT have that luxury. Netflix/Hulu/Amazon/etc., may have your favorite movie now, but what's to stop them from removing it a month later? And with sites like Spotify, they don't always have the complete tracklist in an album. To top things off, these services depend on Wi-Fi. I know in today's world Wi-Fi is pretty abundant, but that does not change the fact that lagging does occur (rather frequently, even in the Silicon Valley), internet CAN slow down (especially during bad weather), and the picture quality can get really pixely. I'm not completely anti-streaming, heck I use them myself. However, I still continue to collect physical media, be it CDs, books, DVDs, despite the anti-physical media brigade's smugness.

speaking of that, there was this place called Breakdown Records that sold old vintage vinyl 45's, records and cassettes for cheap prices and once in a while I would go there to buy a cheap cassette or CD, they closed shop a few years ago cause they just couldn't keep up with the times anymore.

I was just in a Best Buy this past weekend and noticed the CD section, right next to the video section, which will likely meet the same fate before you know it. Surprisingly, one of the CDs was Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet, a possible candidate for "What was your first CD?" given its 1986 release, the year CDs really came of age and began vinyl, and later cassette's demise. Target is pretty much doing the same thing, so I pretty much can declare 2018 "The year that CDs finally died", similar to 2006 for VHS, 2002 for audio cassettes (though it was common until around 2008 for use in audiobooks), 1990 for vinyl, and 1983 for 8-track.

Even the DVD's are pretty much on their final chapter as I only saw one recent Disney title on the main racks, with most of the rest in a $4 discount bin. Blu-Ray will survive for several more years, but around the mid-2020s I see the continued growth of streaming and on-demand devices pulling the curtain on any physical media format, with hard drives the new storage devices, and my family hasn't purchased a Blu-Ray in a couple years. I honestly never saw much of a future for Blu-Ray since by the time it came of age in the mid-late 2000s, the future was already pointing to online streaming thanks to YouTube and other video-sharing sites.

That said, a local flea market still had several stalls with a bunch of CDs and DVDs, so for the next decade or so, they will remain cheap bargains looking to have some music that you may have missed, or by just listening to some music/movies/TV shows that are old school to some degree. Keep in mind that within the past year or two, cassette (both audio and video) have started to make a comeback, especially home-recorded mixtapes containing ephermatic information such as promo spots, interviews, and ads. Speaking of which, I rarely see VHS or audiocassette tapes (especially home recordable ones) at a thrift store or even yard sale compared to even just a few years ago when there was still some laggards who had yet to toss them out.

I agree with this. 15 years ago I'd go to Best Buy about once a month on average and if I could leave without spending more than $100 I considered it a moral victory. Now I might go in there 3 or 4 times a year. And it seems like when I do go in there I see fewer and fewer people. It reminds me of what has been happening to Sears over the past 30 years.

And even when I did shop at Best Buy on a regular basis I almost never bought CDs there because, as you said, they have a crappy selection of music, and after going in there a few times looking for music I wanted only to find that they didn't have it, I gave up on going to Best Buy for CDs a long time ago and started going to my local music store instead like you do.

However, I think the death of physical media is greatly exaggerated. Vinyl LPs have made a dramatic comeback over the last 10 years, with overall US sales of LPs jumping from 988,000 in 2007 to 14,320,000 in 2017 . Because of this, locally owned independent music stores have managed to stay in business, and I've found that they have a vastly greater selection of CDs as well than the big box stores ever had.

If you live anywhere close to a medium-sized city (over say, 100,000 people) then the odds are that there should be a decent music store there and to be honest, Best Buy's decision to stop selling CD's isn't all that big of a deal. Plus, if you're just looking for Top 40 music on CD, then Walmart is always an option.  ;D

The Best Buy I shop at hasn't sold CDs in quite a few years.  CDs haven't officially died yet.  Wal-Mart still sells CDs, and in Canada, we have Sunrise Records and near me is a Sam the Record Man, and they both still do well with CDs

I am still a big lover of physical media.  I don't do iTunes or Amazon Music, etc because I don't want to pay for something that I don't physically own.

Probably 20 years ago I went into a Radio Shack in Michigan City, Indiana. Back in the corner they had an 8-track player that you could tell had been sitting on the shelf for quite some time. My brother had recently mentioned to me that his 8-track player had crapped out, so I decided to buy this for him.

I took it up to the counter and for some reason felt obligated to tell the cashier "I am buying this for my brother". She replied "yeah, right...".  ;D

I have been a collector of vinyl since the 60s. Of course, back then we didn't call it "collecting vinyl", we just "bought records", as was the norm at the time. I continue to listen to albums, among other formats. Five or six years ago, before this temporary, overhyped resurgence of vinyl fueled by hipsters who will soon tire of it while lifelong collectors like myself continue on, I needed a new turntable, as the trusty one I had for years finally gave up the ghost. I went to Best Buy. When I asked for a turntable the young employee looked at me like I had just crawled out of a cave like a relic from another era. He called over another young employee to view me and, kind of smirking,  said "he's looking for a turntable".  They managed to locate a dusty box with a turntable in it from the back.

That exactly describes SO MANY electronic devices of the 60s and 70s. Chunky, fake wood trim...even telephone answering machines (remember those?) and alarm clock radios looked like that at first. I think one of the things I miss most is KNOBS. One simply turned things on and off and they went on and off as directed. No futzing around. Forget touch screens and the rest, give me KNOBS.  ;D

I like both streaming and physical copies. I just started truly streaming most of my music less than a month ago and it is SO convenient. I don't have to sync anything to my iPod or smartphone. Just press the play button and bam.

However, when it comes to albums that I enjoy in full, I'll buy physical copies. I just bought an album from Amazon and I plan on buying more soon.

When it comes to singles that I really enjoy, I might buy a digital copy. I mostly do this when it is an artist I want to support. Otherwise, I'll probably just stream the single. So I enjoy the benefits of all three platforms.

Indeed, it basically feels targeted primarily at soccer moms, since those are the last group of people who might buy physical CDs, just because they can be mildly convenient in the car and they don't have to worry about their kids scrambling with their collections. Deep cuts are not so easy to find at your local supermarket, anymore.

What you say is totally true, and it's why I have stuck to collecting physical music, as well. In part, I think my mind is sort of just happily accustomed to the 2000s way of consuming music, meaning purchasing new albums on iTunes and then listening to it on an iPod, but there are just a ton of inconveniences that come with streaming that I don't have to deal with otherwise. A large chunk of my music isn't even available on iTunes in the first place, and if that's the case, it's almost certainly not available on Spotify either, so I'll have to purchase it on Amazon or find a CD at a used media store if I'm lucky.

I have many old CDs in my basement collecting dust along with cassette tapes.

My local library has audio books on CD's too. Back then, I would bring my brother's CD player and listen to the audio books on CD's. I like listening to a book better than reading because I'm more focused. I guess it's because by listening to the book, I drown out all outside noises and limit my distractions  ;D

That's a good tactic to avoid distraction from ambient noise. O0

Was it a "Realistic" brand? IIRC, that was the brand name Radio Shack sold their electronic entertainment products under.

Yep, "Realistic" it was.

Nothing beats the quality of a good reel-to-reel tape, especially the 10" reels running at max speed.
