Subject: Early 2010s teens vs mid 2010s teens vs late 2010s teens
Written By: unicornic on 03/01/18 at 10:45 am
How do you think they grew up as teens in the 2010s similarly? Differently?
Early 2010s teens: 1994-1996
Mid 2010s teens: 1997-2000
Late 2010s teens: 2001-2003
One difference I could think of at the top of my head is that early 2010s teens used Facebook and didn’t have Snapchat. Unlike mid and late 2010s teens who used Instagram during their teen years
They are similar because they both had smartphones and social media was a big part of their adolescence

Those years are a bit off if you ask me, in the mid-2010s I turned 18-19 and I wasn't exactly bothering with teenage stuff anymore.
But it doesn't matter anyway.
The early and late part of the decade have some noticeable differences, mostly the sites (like Facebook being more prevalant instead of things like Musically or whatever) and phones themselves, but otherwise it boils down to the same stuff.
Tried to google "early 2010s teenage pack" and it gives off this image which is a pretty neat representation of the teenage culture of back then (not sure why it is labelled as kid stuff though):

Vine and Snapchat are more mid 2010's than early 2010's.

I was an early 2010s teen being 17-19 in 2010-2012. It was a lot of fun.
Things have not changed much at all in terms of what kids do day to day, it's just that tech has got better. Although I read a study about how teens started going out less in 2012 or thereabouts, but I'm not going to pretend I was a huge socialite in high school lmao (except 2011/2012 because I was in university then and I was very social).
I think the main difference between then is fashion. The fashion then was more closer to the 2000s, now that I look back on it. I loved wearing brands like Aeropostale and American Eagle, the former of which today is bankrupt and the latter is approaching it. I wore a hoodie practically everyday. I liked wearing high top sneakers, usually by Adidas or Nike. They were very colourful back then, we were all about neon. I have orange shoes, neon blue, neon green, purple, red shoes you name it.
To summarize, on a regular day, you could catch me wearing a red Aeropostale hoodie, probably a white V-neck from H&M underneath, blue 27-inch skinny jeans, the skinnier the better really, and my white/blue/red Le Bron Nike's. It wasn't this exact one, mine wasn't nearly as sportsy looking but it was close.

I didn't have long Justin Bieber hair despite the stereotype of early '10s teens lol. Most of us thought he looked completely ridiculous, very pre-pubescent. I had a crew cut myself, although I know many who had longer hair.
You don't see kids dressing like that anymore. It was a casual/colourful look.

For us late 2010s teens the only difference for us is Snapchat,Instagram games teens now play are Fortnite which definitely popular right now also fidget spinners is mostly what every teen had in 2017 most teens now have consoles which include the Nintendo Switch,Xbox One x and PS4 Pro which all came out last year so that's mostly a difference from Early and Mid 2010s teens.

Teen years peak at 16.5
Which means those born on Jun 30/Jul 1 1993 teen years peaked at the end of the 2000s/start of the 2010s, those born on Feb 28/Mar 1 1995 teen years peaked in middle of the early 2010s, those born on Jun 30/Jul 1 1998 teen years peaked in the middle of the mid 2010s (and the middle of the 2010s in general), those born on Oct 31/Nov 1 2001 teen year peaked in the middle of the late 2010s, and those born on Jun 30/Jul 1 2003 teen years peaked at the end of the 2010s/start of the 2020s.

The mid 2010s doesn't start at 2014. 2013 is a transitional year between the early 2010s and mid 2010s. I'd say the 2012-2013 school year is early 2010s, while the 2013-2014 school year is mid 2010s.
A lot of people like to split decades into equal thirds, which means each part is 40 months.
Early 2010s: Jan 2010 - Apr 2013
Mid 2010s: May 2013 - Aug 2016
Late 2010s: Sept 2016 - Dec 2019

1997ers turn 21 in the late 2010s (2017) also they turn 13 in 2010 which makes them a early 2010s teen. Also 2004ers spend most of their teen years in the late 2010s also ranging from 13-15
No, 13-15 is not most teen years, 2004ers are not late 2010s teens. You have to be born before July 2003 for that.

1991ers are 19 year olds in 2010
1992ers are 18 in 2010
1993ers are 17 in 2010
1994ers are 16 in 2010

2003ers 13 in 2016
2004ers 13 in 2017
2005ers 13 in 2018
What I actually meant was that a 1998er can be 13 in 2011 and still be a Early 2010s teen same example for 2003ers and 2004ers.

What's all of this chit chat?
I don't consider myself to have been an early 2010s teen even though I was 13-14 during 2012-2013.
I consider myself to be a mid '10s teen and not a late '10s teen at all. I'm in college now and a lot of the "teen" stuff is not relatable to me even though I'm still technically a teen.

Adolescence starts at age 11 and ends at 21, which would make ages 12-20 fully adolescence.
Here's my source: https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/teen/Pages/Stages-of-Adolescence.aspx
"Adolescence, these years from puberty to adulthood, may be roughly divided into three stages: early adolescence, generally ages eleven to fourteen; middle adolescence, ages fifteen to seventeen; and late adolescence, ages eighteen to twenty-one."
The core of adolescence is ages 15-17, whereas 14 & 18 are transitional between middle to high school or high school to college.
Or look at it like this
Middle school (ages 11-14) = Early adolescence
High school (ages 14-18) = Core adolescence
Early adulthood (ages 18-21) Late Adolescence
Hope this helps out ;)

ALL teens are adolescents but not all adolescents are teens.
Yeah, but the range 13-19 is only based off the suffix -teen, extending that to 12-20 isn't a bad idea, 12 & 13 are in the same stage of adolescence and 19 & 20 are in the same stage of adolescence.

Yeah, but the range 13-19 is only based off the suffix -teen, extending that to 12-20 isn't a bad idea, 12 & 13 are in the same stage of adolescence and 19 & 20 are in the same stage of adolescence.

Um, like I said....
Being an adolescent =/= Being a teen
ALL teens are adolescents but not all adolescents are teens.

Who really cares, I basically just consider anyone from around the age of 10/11 through their early 20's as an adolescent. Teenager is just 13-19.

Loooooool How freaking ridiculous is it. Yes of course lets start period not even in the middle of a year like May ::)
So to you someone who has its birthday in January is more of mid-2010s teen than someone born in September while they're both born in the same year?
I always hated dividing decades into 3 anyway. Makes more to sense to me to just divide a 10 years-long period into 2 parts and call the first part (0-4) the early part, and the second one (5-9) the late part. It's so much more convenient than trying to shoehorn people's lifes into something ridiculous as a «3 years and 4 months» period. You have much less problem with people crossing over multiple periods.
Anyway these early/mid/late- Something discussions always make me neurotic lol

The mid and late would especially be pretty similar. The 2010s were a very uniform decade. It seems to blur together with the exceptions of 2010-2012.

Remember when this thread was about the differences between early, mid, and late 2010s teens? Lol.
Anyway, mid and late 2010s teens are exactly the same. There’s literally zero difference. Early 2010s teens are pretty different since most stuff people associate with teens nowadays didn’t come out yet or wasn’t mainstream yet. Also, early 2010s teens are millennials, while mid-late 2010s teens are Generation Zers.

This isn't really kid OR teen culture in the early 2010s. This is just the general culture.

Well most pop culture is targeted at or shaped by teenagers and young adults, so it boils down to the same.

Technically speaking, even they existed in the early 2010s. They weren't popular though.

What is this nonsense, let's break it down ::). Let's say early 2010s is 2010-13
Adele - Extremely well-sold album and huge hits both in 2011
Smosh - Extremely popular channel that peaked in 2006-2012
iPhone - A lot seem to agree they blew up around 2011-2012
Minecraft - Extremely popular game that took off as soon as it was released in 2011 and took YouTube by storm in 2012
Calvin Harris - had a massive hit in 2011 with Rihanna
Vine - Its influence peaked in 2015-16
Angry Birds - Popular game that had derivated products already by 2011
Eat Sleep Rave Repeat - Is that a reference to that Fatboy Slim's song? In that case, then late 2013 is maybe too late to be an early 2010s deal
Macklemore - Two huge hits in 2013
Lorde - A huge hit in 2013 but I guess it's not enough?
Carly Rae Jepsen - A huge hit in 2012
Skrillex - The dubstep/brostep craze/backlash is so 2012 it hurts
LFMAO - Two huge hits in 2011-12
XBOX 360 - Pretty obvious one, maybe more late 2000s stuff
Avicii - Had a huge hit in early 2013, and already had some notoriety back in 2011
Gagnam Style - 2012 dance craze
Harlem Shake - 2013 dance craze
Don't Drop That Thun Thun - Late 2013 meme I completely forgot about lol, I guess it doesn't count
Silly Bandz - Very late 2000s-early 2010s fad
Youtube - Most seem to agree its golden age was 2009-2012
Snapchat - More mid-late 2010s fad I guess
I Love Boobies bracelets - Not really a fad, existed already in the 2000s and I have absolutely no idea what it is doing on a supposedly "Kids Fads" image
So yeah, the vast majority was already prevalent in the early 2010s ;)

7/24 or almost 30% of it isn't early 2010s, according to that. Not an outrageous complaint. :P

Yeah, isn’t the early 2010s 2010-2013 and the mid 2010s 2013-2016? Most of the stuff that came out in 2013 was very mid 2010s.

I totally agree! I used to think using the thirds method was a great idea; however, for the last few years, it has made nothing but frustration and endless arguments. I think it's honestly better too for decades to be in halves.
Oh, and speaking of that I made a topic about that a year ago or so. I think it would best for you to check it out.
