Subject: Things 2018 will be remembered for

Written By: batfan2005 on 02/06/18 at 11:57 am

I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread about events and trends that 2018 will be remembered for as they occur. My memory is not as clear before, and sometimes I have trouble trying to remember things from a past year, even 2017. I'll start it off with:

- Tide pods
- The deadly flu epidemic
- Eagles winning the Superbowl
- "Dilly Dilly"
- Justin Timberlake's new album
- Black Panther

I'm glad you survived it. How are you feeling now? It was sad to hear about so many parents losing their child from it.

The Falcon Heavy SpaceX launch will definitely be remembered. Watched that in awe, it was terrific.

I was watching Elon's press conference yesterday after the launch, and so much wanted him to say, "I'm Ironman". The guy is the closest we will get to a real life Tony Stark. Now I'm just waiting for him to bust out the IM suit...  ;D ;D ;D

And I was loving the Bowie music and the HHG2TG references. Don't Panic sign on the sat-nav, also if he really did it, there was a towel and a copy of HHG2TG in the glove compartment.

A lot could happen between now and then, and we might forget to include them. Kind of like how 2016 was eventful with one thing after another that I almost forgot about some of the things especially the earlier part of the year (the Orlando nightclub shootings, Dallas police shootings, and the elections made me forget about the transgender bathroom debate and Harambe). Even in 2017 the hurricanes and Vegas shootings made me forget what happened in the early half of the year.

Some thought its a bad idea, it's better to wait until the end. But I think if so many events happen and we have to create a list at the end of the year, then I forget to include about half of even the major events. 2018 will be remembered as an extremely boring year., mark my words. One of the most boring years of the decade. The movies were terrible this year. The music in 2018 is probably the worst of the entire decade, or at least very close to that. The technology and new smartphone releases make me fall asleep. Absolutely no new shows or seasons of good shows. Game of Thrones has no new season in 2018 and it's the first year without GoT since it started in 2011. The only entertainment you get this year is with what Trump's next move is, and that's just sad. I know 2019 will be a lot more interesting as a lot of things are set to come out and happen that year. Fifa World Cup is quite depressing, where almost every single game is decided by a penalty kick. It's almost like 2018 is year where the entire world just wanted to take a break from everything and tune out and live their lives. People have become numb to the violence and craziness I think.

2018 is looking to be a very consequential year in the realm of politics, arguably more transformative than 2016 was. Just take a look at this video:

I8G9nBE4edw&list=LLkuBV4J1SO_qJ4uBgsPwDwA&t=0s&index=2&frags=pl%2Cwn

This Supreme Court battle has positioned well with Trump and it will likely be "one of the most consequential Supreme Court shifts in a generation". This, along with many other key cultural moments that have dominated the political sphere; the unfortunate Parkland shooting that has had a subsequent debate on gun control, the marriage of Prince Harry & Meghan Markle (not necessarily 'political', but surely a cultural watershed, especially since their is now an African-American female that is part of the Royal Family) along with Trump meeting the Queen in the following days, the Historic (and controversial, especially now looking in retrospect) Summit between North Korea and the United States, Jerusalem now being declared the capital of Israel, women being able to drive in Saudi Arabia, the list goes on and on, and you could see surely see that 2018 is anything but 'quiet'. And keep in mind, that's just politics.

I was saying this in another thread, was talking to some of my friends @ RCA, they are signing a lot of POP punk bands, pop punk is coming back into full force Q4 of this year. Music is going to sound very different at the end of the year. In 2001 the same thing happened until the fall of the year.

I agree with it being boring and bland except for the movies. There have been plenty of good movies this year, such as Black Panther, Ready Player One, Avengers: Infinity Wars, Deadpool 2, Han Solo, Jurassic World: Lost Kingdom, and plenty more.

usually when a part of a year is really boring  ala 2001
something insane happens in the other half to speed it up (not including 9/11)

I remember that summer being really bored until that Fall where things kicked into overdrive and the 2000s culture started

If anything, 2018 was the first "new age" year of the 2010's rather than the start of the 2020's.

2001 was the start of a new decade, whereas 1997 and 2008 were the first "new age" years of their decades.

2018, however, was a little different. It seems to involve many changes that make the year transitional.

I can see the 1997 and 2008 comparisons, but 2001 comparison is a bit of a stretch in my opinion.

2018 ain't the start of anything new nor is it any different than the last two to three years, in my humble opinion. We are still strongly in late 2010s culture and we have been since early 2016. We may have peaked but not significantly enough to notice any new changes on the horizon in pop culture or even politics.

First it started in late 2016 the month of Trump becoming president, second LOL there has been many changes in the last few months of 2018 to set it apart from the rest of the 2010s.

- Emo movement rising
-  Kylie Changes her lips
-  Cardi B' 1's on the billboard
- Hipster movement officialy dead
-  Toys r us closed
-Kb toys revived
- Facebook backlash
- Rise of sitcoms

It did not start in late 2016. Brexit and Pokemon Go in the summer of 2016 were huge aspects of culture that started the late 2010s. The late 2010s started in late 2015/early 2016, when the new style of EDM came on the radio and dancehall started getting big. Heck you can even see hints of it in mid 2015 when Trump announced he was running for president (only hints of the culture, but the mid '10s were extremely short overall) And political tensions and mass murders increased significantly al throughout 2016, not late 2016 only. You could say by late 2016 we were firmly in the late 2010s and completely left mid 2010s culture behind when Trump got elected, but it was not the start lol. 2016 was one big transitional year for music, politics, and pop culture. I also remember early 2016 being the start of political buzz words used as insults (not SJW which started way before that, but "cuck" got popular in 2016). 2017 and 2018 were both steady years of late 2010s culture with fairly little changes. These are the Trump years we are in, and there are not a lot of changes in the last two years. Now if we compare this to 2014 and even 2015? Then absolutely it is different. But it feels the same as 2017 and even 2016.

My prediction is 2019 will be mostly the same, and we will start to see a major transition happen in the 2020 - 2021 school year. This will probably be a huge shift that we haven't seen since 2008. I think 2021 will be the first real 2020s year.

2014 was the start of the whole political turmoil. 2014 and 2015 are definitely still comparable to today.

2013, on the other hand, is probably the last year that feels very different from today.

I disagree. 2014 is nothing like today. I'm curious, what similarities do you see with 2014? Everything was different (different president in the US, different prime minister here in Canada, different state of the economy, completely different music, hipsters were super in, mass terrorist attacks were not common). It may not be a different world, but it is WAY more similar to the early 2010s than today. Clearly a different era and quite apart from today. In 2015 you saw hints of what we see today, but still clearly another time and era. 2016 is the first year that has any real connection to today. And even in 2016 you had some mid 2010s holdovers. The mid 2010s were a short era (2014 - early 2016). That's why you can argue this decade is quite split into two eras. I honestly think the mid 2010s had more in common with the early 2010s than it does with the late 2010s (where we are now), especially now with Trump in office. It's like the world completely changed and a lot of it has to do with politics.

2015 was the peak of the mid 2010s and vine culture. The trap rap of 2015 actually sounds different from today (less mumbling and less over-produced, just listen to Trap Queen and you'll hear what I mean) and popular music in general was very different as well. In 2015, it was still a strong year for the hipster as well. 2014 is downright dated in many regards compared to today.

2014 had:
*Crimean Crisis
*Elliot Rodger rampage (this somewhat led to the rise of the whole "incel" thing)
*Michael Brown incident (the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement)
*Gamergate (the absolute start of the whole SJW vs. Alt-right war)
*Ferguson riots (the rise of racial tensions)
*Rise of ISIS

These all easily connect 2014 with today.

Most of the things you listed aren't even that relevant anymore today. And 2014 would only be the start of it anyway, not like all the things that started then were very popular. SJW vs alt-right is a fight that is getting old for everyone, BLM is not talked about as much anymore, racial tensions have always been an issue, ISIS has calmed down, and the Crimean Crisis happened in 2014 and ended there. Obama was still president in 2014, nobody would have imagined Trump would be running the country in 2014. And nobody would have predicted the political turmoil that we have in the world now back in 2014. It felt quite disconnected from today. I think in two years people will look back at 2014 being very dated and people will get what I mean pretty soon. It's still too soon I guess, only four years has passed but still so many changes has happened since then.

Pokemon go is hardly even played today and its peak was Nov 2016, right around Xmas I noticed a fall off
It started in late 2016, despite some trickles of new culture coming in in 2016 we still had mid 2010s influences as 2016 was also a mid year and late year,
A nice cap off point is Nov 2016 when trump got elected, because the entire mood changed.

The changes such as EMO NITE, and emo rap emerged whiten the last 2 years, so how can you say there as been no changes LOL
NIki Minaj has fallen off as well, as well as Justin Timberlake. Can we not forget about ME TOO movement it shook Hollywood to its core

FWIW, I think the reason a lot of those things seem a bit different from today is because 2018 in itself has been a pretty transformative year. To the point that even 2016 is starting to show a little bit of age.

If you were to compare 2014 & 2016, or even 2014 & 2017; a lot of those things Ty mentioned like the SJW v. Alt Right Culture Wars, The 16’ Election, The Crimean Crisis, ISIS, etc. would’ve seemed pretty comparable. This is especially true since 2016 was sort of a cultivation of all of those things, hence why the 16’ election felt like a volcano erupting, but the turbulence had been brewing up for years, since 2014.

2018 so far has seen ISIS practically destroyed, a shadow of its former sense from even just 2 years ago (remember the countless attacks ISIS and inspired actors committed though our 2015-2017? You barely hear that anymore, and even then they’re  not as catastrophic as they once were). The Culture Wars (while still prevalent, as you could tell with the battle for the Supreme Court) has sort of died down. It seems like as each day passes, the more and more people become used to Trump being POTUS (for better and worst) which further legitimizes his presidency. Essentially, intentionally or not, we are essentially becoming either more conservative or more subscribed to Trump’s vision of America in its most positive (at least in him mind) and negative light.

Americans are more confident on the economy to levels that haven’t been seen since the early 2000s, but conversely are more divided on racial lines than never before, on top of being more skeptical of foreigners and our institutions. This is Trump’s America, and it’s no longer debatable whether or not Trump won philosophically, he has. These changes I’m noticing are what sets 2018 apart from 2016, when one could argue in spite of the record levels of division, there was still some sort of sanity in the Western World (of course that was eradicated with Brexit in mid 2016 and The US Election in Late 2016), and apart of that was because Obama was still POTUS.

So the REAL Late 2010s, in my observations, seemed to had started around in 2017 (which lines up in a mathematical sense, cultural sense, and a political sense), and have speeded into overdrive in 2018, as people slowly but surely become acclimated to this new version of America. It is those reasons why 2016, let alone 2015, DO NOT BELONG IN THE LATE 2010s, as they have more in common culturally, politically, technologically, and economically with the world of 2013/2014, than they do to the world of 2017/2018.

2016 is connected to today imo. And 2013 was its own thing and still part of the early 2010s. 2017 and 2018 were barely transitional when you compare it to the change that took place in 2016. But honestly this entire decade had consistent gradual changes throughout, so if you want to argue that the changes took place in one particular year over another you can. I personally feel the last big year of change was in 2016.

For popular music, the shift definitely started in the late 2015 - 2016 school year. This was the last time there has been a noticeable shift in the sound of music this decade. I think Justin Bieber influenced the change into the modern late '10s EDM sound (with weird annoying noises and drops in the middle of songs)  when he released his album. The dancehall trend also got super big in early 2016. And modern-day mumble rap got very popular around early 2016 (the trap from 2015 was different).

Pop culturally 2014 was already mid 2010's, but politically it was still in that transition phase with ISIS on the rise and police brutality, but as we've said many times before even when it comes to the pop culture of music and technology, the 2010's haven't been that much changing as the 90's and 2000's were, but when it comes to the political world of the 2010's the changes have been drastic and have impacted the climate a lot more. Here in the U.S. 2015 was the year the political world totally shifted in a way I can't even describe. Once the Charleston, South Carolina shooting happened at the church leading to the Confederate Flag having to go down, gay marriage got legalized nationwide, ISIS attacks started increasing more, police brutality started happening even more often than it already was from 2014, and Donald Trump entered the political world, it was totally on. All of that happened in 2015. I've brought it up on here many times before. I was a senior in high school from 2013-2014 and it was still a very colorful atmosphere for most of the part, although not as colorful as the early 2010's IMO but still better than what would transpire from the second half of 2014 and especially 2015 and forward. Then 2016 comes which was the absolute peak of mid 2010's culture. The late 2010's culture politically and pop culture went in full effect by late 2016/early 2017 though once Trump got elected and entered office.

You may probably disagree with me, but I have a feeling that 2016 may in fact be the absolute peak of the 2010's culturally and politically.

I agree. It seems like in almost every decade the 'classic' period ends in either the '5' or '6' year, coinciding to when that decade's culture 'peaked' and when more of the newer or (for sake of the term) 'modern' trends of the decade emerge for the second half/later period. IMHO; since the 1950s it goes like this:

Classic 1950s ended in 1956 right before the rise in Rock n Roll and the creation of NASA

Classic 1960s ended in 1966 right before the rise in the Hippie Movement & the Summer of Love, Surf Music & The British Invasion still prominent, James Bond being the superstar of the day, and before Color Television became prevalent

Classic 1970s ended in 1975 when the Vietnam War officially ended, before Disco became popular & when Metal was still king, and before stagflation became a much bigger societal issue along with the Iranian Revolution

Classic 1980s ended in 1985 before the NES Launches (Nationwide in 86'), before Glam Metal & Hip Hop get big & when New Wave was still big, and before the Iran-Contra Scandal & the beginning of the end for the Soviet Union

Classic 1990s ended in 1996 before the Internet reached 20% in Worldwide usage, before Soundgarden disbanded & when Biggie died, when teen pop with The Spice Girls & Backstreet Boys got big, the last full year of the 4th generation before the PS1 & N64 with SNES & Genesis' last year of prominence, and before Clinton's controversial second term

Classic 2000s ended in 2006 before the launch of the iPhone, before AutoTune got big in pop music & Kanye's Graduation album debuted & changed hip hop/pop music, the last year of the 6th generation before the Wii, PS3, & Xbox 360 with GameCube, PS2, & Xbox's last year of prominence, and before the collapse of the Housing Market which was the first critical block in the dismantling of the U.S economy

Classic 2010s ended in 2016 before the launch of the iPhone X which revitalized the smartphone world & led to full bezzeless displays on phones, before the rise in Latin pop & the last year of Folk music, indie music, & mid 10s era EDM being big, before the launch of the Nintendo Switch along with the mid cycle refreshes of the PS4 Pro & Xbox One X, and before the start of Trump's controversial presidency

The Internet hit 22% usage in September 1996 in the US.

It hit more than 1% of worldwide usage by the end of 1996.

I honestly think that 2017 and 2018 are nearly culturally identical to each other, alot of the changes people are associating with 2018 actually happened in 2016 and 2017 such as Emo Rap and, Hipster culture completely dying. There has probably been a change in the politically world though.
Overall, there are some cultural changes in 2018 but, just not enough at all to seperate it from 2017.

Also anti-Trump protests are a regular occurrence in London. Actually, they're a regular occurrence here in Toronto too. Actually, there was even an anti-gun protest after the Parkland massacre, and the high schoolers here wanted to join the walkout... All I can think was "Guys... wrong country. -_-"

Black Panther will definitely win something...like Best Popular Film.  ::)

If any of those three films are nominated for anything I'm guessing:

Black Panther:
Best Popular Film - Undoubtedly a nomination, most likely a win
Best Picture - Maybe a nomination, I doubt a win
Best Cinematography - Maybe a nomination, I doubt a win
Best Costume Design - Maybe a nomination, Maybe a win
Best Original Score - Maybe a nomination, Maybe a win

Love, Simon:
Best Picture - Maybe a nomination, I doubt a win
Best Adapted Screenplay - Maybe a nomination, Maybe a win

Crazy, Rich Asians:
Honestly, I doubt any nominations but if it can be pull ANYTHING it'd be
Best Popular Film: maybe a nomination, I doubt a win
Best Costume Design - I doubt a nomination, I doubt a win

I don't know why this year has been so bland compared to the rest of the 2010s  :-\\ hopefully this doesn't mean 2020s are going to be this bland.
Like i can't think of a single thing memorable of this year besides maybe Infinity War and Octopath Traveler and those are just movies/videogames outside that nothing at all  :o

Hopefully 2019 is as memorable as 2016 or 2017, it's going to be the last year of the decade so hopefully some big events.

Judging from a lot of what I see online I think we could end up seeing a genocide in the US of certain people that the Christian Right hates and I would be on the list.  The future does not look good.  We are definitely in Germany 1930s territory.  All Trump needs is a Reichstag fire.

I agree progressivism is losing its lustre. I was reading a news story about a university in the UK asking its students not to clap because other students with autism are sensitive to sudden noises, and the reactions were so over the top along the lines of "communists trying to ban clapping". It's not in vogue anymore to be considerate of others in this far right era. It wasn't like this a few years ago.

Nope.  The only people's "feelings" who matter these days are the white racist bigoted homophobic fundamentalist Christians, and boy are they offended by a lot of stuff.

A lot of people in the church I grew up in used to warn that if gay marriage were legalized it would break this country apart and we might even have a civil war and in no way would Christians just "deal with it."  That is what we are seeing right now.  It's not just about gay marriage but the broader issue of the decline of white Christian dominance and the decline of the power of the church.

If we were in 1930's Germany territory, volkisch heathenry would be the most dominant religion, capitalism will be completely abandoned in favor of third position practices (mixing antisemitism and white nationalism with left-wing economics as well as some left-wing social values), and you'd see fashwave (Xurious, Elessar, Cybernazi) and fringe NSBM (Absurd, M8l8th, Graveland) on the charts instead of the type of music that you see on the charts now:

https://www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100 (If we entered 1930's Germany territory or even a little bit close to it, NONE of these songs will be on the hot 100 charts)

Trump is mixing white nationalism and Christian dominionism.  And Nazi Germany had aspects of both sides of the political spectrum but was more right-wing than left-wing.  Either way it was authoritarian just like Trumpism is authoritarian.  It was based on the idea that being a true German was being of the Aryan race and that there's a single set of societal and cultural norms everyone should be forced to follow with pride.  While the religion of Adolf Hitler and the overall Nazi plan for religion is a complicated topic, Germany at the time was still heavily tied to it's Christian church.  In Trump's America, being a true American is being a white, heterosexual, conservative Christian Republican.  Ethnic minorities, immigrants, LGBT, non-Christians or even non-fundie Christians at that, liberal big city whites, etc do not apply.  I worry at this point all that Trump needs is his "reichstag fire."

Subject: Re: Things 2018 will be remembered for

Written By: batfan2005 on 02/03/21 at 2:23 pm

Looks like I never got around to making a final list. Now that it's a few years ago it's kind of blur to me. Here's what I can remember:

Music: Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Post Malone, Bazzi, "Jackie Chan", Shawn Mendes, Cardi B, Drake (In My Feelings), "This is America", "2002", Travis Scott
Movies: Black Panther, Avengers - Infinity War, Ready Player One, Aquaman, Crazy Rich Asians, Spider-Man - Into the Spiderverse, Birdbox
TV: Rosanne reboot, The Resident, 9-1-1, Yellowstone, Altered Carbon
Video games: Spider-Man on PS4, Red Dead Redemption 2
Eagles winning Superbowl and the "Dilly dilly" commercials
Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea and France winning the World Cup
Trump politics including the border wall, shutdowns, the North Korea summit, the mid-term elections, and Brett Kavanaugh
The passings of George H.W. Bush and John McCain
School shootings especially the Parkland, FL which started the March for Our Lives movement
Tide Pod challenge and the Keke/In My Feelings challenge
The #MeToo movement

It's funny to look back on the thread and see that I was complaining about how bad or boring the year was. Little did I know what was to come a few years later and now I look back with a sense of nostalgia. The later half of the year was actually pretty memorable, at least in my personal life.

For me that title goes to 2013 or 2014. 2018 was the closest thing to a good year in recent memory (sadly). 2017 and 2019 were decent as well.
