Subject: How "liberal" is fashion today?
Written By: 90s Guy on 02/02/18 at 6:31 pm
I have a big interest in the fashion of the 1960s (specifically 1967-1969) and also of the mid 90s (specifically 92 to 94). I was wondering - how liberal would you gauge fashion today? What I mean is, how conformist is fashion; how jugemental are others in 2018?
For example, if a male relative of yours wore outfits similar to any of these, would you think ill of them:

Today I advised a younger worker at my office that he could better further his career if he wore a tie to work.

I would say less conformist than the 2000s but moreso than the '90s, if that makes any sense. The peak of conformist fashion was the early/mid '00s.

Clearly, leisure dress is quite different than "businesses" dress, so your advise was appropriate, otherwise...
...To the question, no. Nothing wrong with any of those outfits

I'll be honest, I used to defend the early/mid 00s, but when I look back, I see where you're coming from. Technically main 2010s fashion is less "conformist" than main 2000s fashion.
However the 90s were more liberal fashion-wise than both decades, as it seems to be the era in which there were many different niche subgroups and styles to choose from. And they were all distinguishable from each other. The early/mid 00s had different subcultures, but they felt more diluted, more watered down compared to the various styles of the 90s.
Having said that, the reason I still think the 2010s are a much worse time for fashion than both the 90s and 00s is because fashion has become a lot more homogeneous. The hipster and trap/athleisure trends have basically monopolized every other style, so that there is no variety anymore, and no real alternatives to the primary styles. Not to mention the aesthetics themselves are just unappealing, and will age horribly. I wouldn't be so bothered by today's fashion if there were alternative styles that could appeal to many different types of people. Hopefully the 2020s will bring back that sense of variety.

Well I work for a trucking company. A very unusual one where our offices are immaculate and the top managers are expected to dress in business attire. Look professional as we refer to our drivers as professionals, which they are.
The gent that I coached on wearing a tie came into the main office from one of our maintenance shops as he now has a desk job. He's a real up-and-comer. Some of his cohorts were telling him he did not need to "go tux" and wear a tie.
I advised him that it never hurt anybody's career to dress snappy, and that a good visual draws even more attention to good work.
But it is all context-sensitive. In a previous company where I worked 29 years ago, a huge manufacturing concern, I led the effort to get rid of wearing neckties as mandatory. The reason was that somehow it became a sign of division. We had a couple of union guys who got desk jobs and started wearing ties, and they were accused of being sellouts. Meanwhile, my assistant superintendent looked absolutely ridiculous wearing a tie out on the mill floor.
So at a moment when I knew I had the power and position to do it, I started the "ties are optional" policy. Some people were absolutely furious, and would not let go of their clip on ties with the little gold collar bar. Until one day our President showed up at one of my meetings, and in a very visible way, he yanked off his tie. It was now official and sanctioned. 8)
A few years later, I took over a purchasing team that was responsible for about $300MM of spending and it had poor discipline and was "sloppy" in its approach to business. I showed up for that job with a sport jacket and tie every day, and in short order my team members came to understand that they should do so too. It was about sending a message that things were changing and this department was going to become professional.
I was at an executive meeting and one of the guys (who was horrified when I led the tie-optional policy a few years before) walked up to me and asked "hey LyricBoy, what's with the jacket and tie? I thought you were anti-tie." ::)
I looked him straight in the eye and replied "I guess you were not paying attention... it wasn't about ties." ;D

Well we shall see when I show up at the office on Tuesday.
He does not directly work for me so technically I cannot "order" him to do so. But I am pretty sure he will take my advice. I've got a lot of stick at this company. ;D

Every job interview I have worn a Nice Polo Long Sleve dress shirt, and a tie(usually tied by my mom). No matter the job I am interviewing for.
I have had 3 Job Interviews in my life.
At each one I have gotten the job. I only have had 2 jobs in my life. I interviewed at Kroger and got the job but found another job I prefered before I could work their so I turned them down to work at the other job. And of course I work at the Midwests Largest Amusement Park, Kings Island(!) Now so.... :)
I think my technique works. :D :)
I dressed in a Suit for our mundane Shirt and Tie Dresscode Days for Mass at my Catholic School. I stood out from the crowd. Read a Reading from the Prophet Malicai. I got many compliments about it! I think its because I dressed nice!

I agree with musicguy 93 fashion definitely seems more conformist. Every young guy and girl literally look the same. The girls all look like a kardashian/jenner clone.

Uniformity != conformity. Most girls do not look like Kim Kardashian.
