Subject: The end of social media (for real has started)

Written By: John Titor on 01/14/18 at 2:59 pm

Not youtube but it's happening guys, I am noticing more and more people talking about leaving social media or detoxing,I keep seeing interviews from people saying  "social media is now lame and over the hill"

I have had atleast 10 interactions with people this week where they were talking about deleting social media. Is anyone else noticing this trend?

So what comes next if social media is ending?

Is it any surprise? The internet can be a vicious place.  :P  :P  :P

And if you're a sensitive person, like me, I try to avoid conversations that
trigger me.

I deleted my whole Facebook awhile ago. I have no friends on Twitter either.

There are no consequences for being a dick on the internet, maybe that's why
some people need breathing space from it every once in a while.

For real? Social media these days is available in apps and not just the computer, so you don't have to wait until you are home to receive your updates, and therefore no break from it unless you have the willpower. So yes, it becomes overwhelming. Facebook in particular has become overwhelming with the sheer amount of updates when you scroll your feed, and there was a recent article that they are trying to change some things about it because people are getting sick of it.

Not long ago I deleted my Instagram because I was too busy for it and I've noticed the longer you go without updating people tend to unfollow you. I enjoy Instagram and will eventually create a new one and I'm debating whether or not to open a Facebook account. I don't see a difference between people who leave the forum because life becomes busy or they just aren't into it anymore and those who leave social media accounts.

I can remember a time when people could sit in chatrooms for hours and spend half the day playing Yahoo games and posting in their personal blogs that predated MySpace to socialize with strangers online. Not to mention all the forums that existed for this or that interest. In my book those were all forms of social media before anyone used that term. It just evolves, it doesn't go away. To think no new form of it will come about and that people will no longer see a need to connect with anyone online anymore is quite frankly absurd.

Instagram is still growing exponentially, as is Reddit. Facebook is still growing last I heard, as is Snapchat.

The only big one that's running into problems is Twitter. Their active userbase has really stagnated, and I bet it's been in decline for a while now. The only thing propping their numbers is bots.

Social media ain't going away. If social media is leaving then what will replace it? Until it gets a replacement (certainly not face-to-face conversation, that ship has sailed a long time ago) it will stay here for a long time. This is good for promoters and small businesses to get their stuff out and advertise their things. I don't use social media as much as I used to but I know a lot of people who do.

I'll check that one out!

The main thing I don't like about Reddit is the humour. It's an upvote system, so jokes usually get up voted, and when you're looking for a serious discussion it can be very annoying.

The only social media app I use is Facebook (and YouTube).

Despite the thread title I've actually started using Facebook more over the past few months. After 2012 or so I avoided it because it was "full of old people", but now I don't care if my parents/relatives are reading what I'm posting. They're surprisingly nice and not embarrassing ;D

I have Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Twitter was once my favourite but now it's hard to keep up with (probably followed too many people). Instagram is the one I use most nowadays, and by "most" I mean check in every 3 or 4 days. No Snapchat or YouTube (social side of it) for me.

And they're the biggest drama queens on it too.

LOL I've noticed that too ;D

They keep trying to force you to make an account with those obtrusive pop-ups. They want to collect data on you to serve you ads. There's no benefit for me in making one so I don't.

I'm still wondering what will eventually replace streaming. Just as streaming replaced what came before, including physical media and downloading. Don't get too used to any one technology or social media platform because they WILL eventually change to something else.  It gives the dudebros in Silicon Valley something to do.

I have never used Instagram or Snap Chat and never will. I don't use any of the new social media platforms. I'm old fashioned that way. I don't even use Netflix, Spotify, or other streaming platforms. I am definitely the minority in my age group because most of my peers at my university have these things.

But I don't believe social media will die since it has become crucial to most people at the moment. Current social media platforms may die out but they'll only be replaced by other sites/apps.

Social media isn't going anywhere. It will continue to evolve. Remember when Myspace was the craze? Then came along Facebook which was big throughout the early portion of this decade, then everybody switched to Instagram? Snapchat is the most commonly used social media among teenagers right now. With all this technology, smartphones and apps we have, social media will probably never disappear.

If so, I think we will be healthier as a society for it. I do wonder what would happen to our interaction with unlike-minded individuals from hundreds of miles away, but I also wonder if losing that may nevertheless be worth it to get people back to valuing education and healthy skepticism again.

Subject: Re: The end of social media (for real has started)

Written By: Slim95 on 01/15/18 at 4:16 pm

The only way social media goes away is if something that is not traditional face-to-face communication replaces it. There's no way people would go back to a time without technology. If anything it would only be more of a tool rather than a fad. So if robots maybe replace the need for social media 100 years in the future or something then it would go away. But social media is here to stay for a while and AR/VR will probably be the next phase of social media. But I think what you guys are getting at is the social media culture and fad, like selfie snap chat stuff may leave. Which is very possible as one platform may replace the need for multiple apps. So there would still be social media and everyone would still be on it, but it would look different and be more of a tool than a fad.

People don't value education any less now than they did back in the '80s.
Back in the '80s, there was this drive to be "star athlete" (and to hell with academics) whereas today, there is less focus on sports than there is on getting primary and secondary school done.
And f*ck Betsy DeVos for implying otherwise

It has nothing to do with Betsy DeVos and everything to do with people being very easily taken in these days. If people remained informed and had a desire to remain informed, I would agree with you. But the move towards deliberate ignorance can only have one culprit: lack of education.

Not growing as fast as expected (which is what Wall Street share prices are influenced by) is not the same as not growing at all.

That form of education is different.
Here's the problem. Public schools don't emphasize on critical thinking, not nearly as much as they used to. For them, it's all about following the teacher's rules and abiding by society's rules in general. That is the OPPOSITE of critical thought.
Society lacks critical thought and independent thought, now more than ever. You're right about that.

I already wrote how I deleted ALL my social media/forum accounts back in 2013 and did a total digital detox (just torrenting movies/watching YouTube or good old TV but only positive things, NO news or politics). Best thing I've ever did. I guess that is one of the reasons why life in the old days felt less toxic. I'm easily triggered by negativity and online there's abundance of it but I also become envious of others if I look at their Fb profiles.

Digital detoxes are needed, at least to reconnect with the analogue things in life like face-to-face friends and nature.

I can see how Tumblr would fall out of favor, particularly because the sense of community on it isn't great. You can't form groups nor can you comment and reply without reblogging. Ok, so there is a feature called Disqus that comes with a certain layout option, but even that is very limited. I don't use Pinterest to know much about it.

So is Facebook now like a 20s+ thing exclusively? Do barely any teens use it? Because at my school everybody always asks "Do you have Facebook?" Nobody ever asks do you have Instagram or anything else. Seems like everyone at my university has Facebook and uses it. It's always the first social media site that gets asked about to other people and adding friends on Facebook is still a big thing at my university. So I guess the decline is for the younger generation now? Most people in my age group still actively uses it.

Maybe. I mean when Facebook first exploded and began giving MySpace a run for it's money, many people my age at the time (16/17) said Facebook was for older people. I myself was reluctant to create one because it seemed boring. MySpace allowed you customize your own background and add music. To me MySpace was more teen friendly and Facebook was for people in their 30s. When MySpace started to fallout I only went to Facebook because I had no choice.

So maybe teens are beginning to feel like Facebook is for older people again.

Social media isn't going away anytime soon. If anything, it's primetime TELEVISION that will be going away soon and streaming services like Netflix or Hulu that will take over full force soon. Expect that to happen throughout the 2020's. Live NEWS and SPORTS will stay alive forever.

Lol. I didn't like the change. I spent a good amount of time making my page look good. I tried finding my page recently and it's nowhere to be found. Not sure what happened to it but I'm not that upset because there was some cringy things on there lol.

Teenagers don't use it until they get to university, then they realize Snapchat/Instagram has no useful application in the real world and Facebook is a necessity for keeping in touch with people and also staying active in your community/university, that's when they get back on it. ;D

When my mom got on Facebook, I think it was in 2010 or 2011, I got into her account and made her block me. That way, I didn't show up in her search ;D

Social media isn't going away anytime soon. If anything, it's primetime TELEVISION that will be going away soon and streaming services like Netflix or Hulu that will take over full force soon. Expect that to happen throughout the 2020's. Live NEWS and SPORTS will stay alive forever.

We're living in the age where everything is convenient for us.

Sometimes that kind of thing is unavoidable.  I have to get into specific conversations because they interest me.
