Do you miss the days when finding a movie to watch meant browsing the local video store, hoping that you'd stumble across some rare gem? Alamo Drafthouse sure does. After amassing collections from small shops, the enthusiast-driven theater chain is opening a "reimagining" of rental stores.

You'll find the porn in the back room.

At first I thought predictions that video rental stores of all things could come back to be a little silly, but with the dark specter of net neutrality and its threat to Netflix, it has become more possible. Plus it would be a great way for me to stick it to Amazon.

I don't miss video rental stores and now with unlimited free online websites where you can watch films and TV shows all you want, it's all the rage.

Blockbuster needs to come back

Blockbuster needs to come back
I think Netflix is easier to just watch something from the comfort of your own home.

Seems like a hipster fad to me, unless they do in fact see the net neutrality repeal ending the age of streaming movies on demand and want to be ahead of the curve.

I agree, Howard. Why go back to video rental stores when there is Netflix. ??? I do miss the thrill of going to the video stores and taking out movies, but I think Netflix and Hulu are best for watching ANYTHING now. I don't see the use for any video store these days. :(

I think Amazon video is a better replacement for Blockbuster than Netflix. You can rent any movie on there for around Blockbuster prices. Netflix usually doesn't have new releases.

Color me intrigued. I had a Family Video right by where I used to live in Oklahoma. There's some kind of video store pretty close to where I live now; I think it's local.
I feel there's room for video stores in this age of Redbox/Netflix/Amazon/Everything-at-your-fingertips. Let's say you rent the wrong movie by mistake. An actual human being would be able to help you. "Excuse me, is this The Help with Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer, or is it The Beatles?" Or "Could you tell me a little bit about Suspiria?" Or "I'm a big Hitchcock/Carpenter/ fan; what would you recommend in that vein?"
Also, with Netflix, you kinda need to know what you're looking for. With video stores, even if they don't have the movie you're looking for (This happened to me once at Blockbuster.), you can find plenty of other options, or you can revisit an old favorite. (When all other options failed me, I just revisited Halloween 4.)
Plus, VHS gives you an opportunity to (re)discover obscure or long-lost/forgotten films that never even made it to DVD, let alone Blu-ray... and you'd be lucky if they screened in 35mm at New Beverly/Alamo Drafthouse/similar.
Vinyl came back with a vengeance. Even cassettes have their niche. This'll be fun.

VHS is goregous...... VHS AND BETA are the only ways to experience ANALOGUE MOVIES,etc.. in thier original formats!! (Maybe Videodisc also)

I did like Blockbuster back in the days but now I never have to worry about anymore late fees. ::)

I don't see it coming back unless Netflix dies somehow. It's just unnecessary.

Netflix will never die, it's here to stay.

Some programs and films are taken offline, but newer items are available to watch. i.e. just recently "Friends".

It's not coming back. Redbox is posting huge losses, I doubt having a physical store will make things any easier.

and the good thing is if you want to resume a film for later just turn it off and it shows where you left off and watch the rest for another time.
