Subject: Will the early 2020s still feel like the 2010s?
Written By: questoftheninja on 11/11/17 at 8:54 am
I was wondering because most decades last sometime into the next decade, but will the 10s still have a huge presence pop culturally in 2020 and 2021?

I will have to wait and see.
Basically. We're not psychics ;D
It's only two years from now though, so I can't imagine it will be a huge departure from our present time.

Most decades last sometime into the next decade? ???
I think what you meant to ask is: Will the new innovations and inventions of the 2010s still be around in the 2020s? I think it's too soon to tell.
It's only two years from now though, so I can't imagine it will be a huge departure from our present time.
I imagine the first three years of the 2020s won't be any different from the first three years of any time period. We will be living in the aftermath of the year 2019.

A lot can happen in two years, just reflect for a while now life was like back then compared with today. Not going into details, my life had totally change?

We don't even fully know how the late 2010's will turn out yet, let alone the early 2020's

It's very possible that the early 2020s will be similar to 2018/2019, more or less. However, I seriously doubt they will be similar to 2013-2017, which is generally considered to be the main 2010s (my years may be off by a bit, but I really don't care about semantics anymore)

This. I have predicted for a long time that the start of the early '20s will be in late 2018 to 2019. I think the early '20s will be similar to 2018 and 2019, but not similar to 2008 - 2017. However I may be wrong because the 2010s are super consistent. It is very possible for things not to change until around 2021, if that's the case it will be the first decade where last decade's culture crosses over into the next since the 1990s (I think '80s culture lasted until 1991, but you can correct me if I'm wrong). This was not the case for the 2000s and 2010s as these decade's culture started early (1999 and 2009 respectively).
All in all, I hope we have a major transformation and transition next year that will bring us forward to next decade's culture, but given the consistency of this decade and the fact that the U.S. will still have the same president until 2021 at least (unless he gets impeached), I would honestly not be surprised if 2010s culture remains until around 2021 and we have big culture transition into 2020s culture around 2021/2022.
While we are on this topic, what kind of culture do you wish will come? I am kind of hoping for a kick-ass vibe like the early 2000s and to an extent the mid 2000s. Not the same culture of course because I want new and unique trend to come, but I want the feel to be laid back and I wouldn't mind for a little more masculine culture to come back (if that's the right word to use). Something a little more real and less poppy like this decade was.

No. I don't think so. There are lots of people out there who say that 2020 will be super transformative making the era mentioned being completely different from the late 10s.

There are a lot of people who say that, but what are they? They are human just like the rest of us who make predictions. It means nothing what we say because anything can happen, they are not fortune tellers and psychics. All we can do is predict.

That's what they are predicting, and it could happen.

‘80s culture (i.e. - Star Wars, rugby sweaters, breakdancing, and ‘50s nostalgia) was gone by 1990. You’re thinking of what came out of the ‘80s (I.e. - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, ‘60s nostalgia, Married with Children, and Terminator) as ‘80s culture when that’s ‘90s culture. Shows like Roseanne was introduced and discovered in the ‘80s, but wildly popular in the ‘90s.

yeah I know this decade is consistent but I can hardly see this culture lasting another year let alone until.2021 buy that time this culture would be so stale if nothing changes.

Maybe the fact that the decade actually has a proper name as opposed to the 00s and the 10s will spark a cultural shift. Plus the UK will officially leave the EU in 2019, and the next US presidential election will be in 2020. That's already very different than the 2010s.

Well, if current trends are any indication, latin pop could be everywhere by the early 2020s.
Since Despacito, more and more Latin Pop singles have been hitting the charts.
First "Mi Gente", then "Havana", now J Balvin still dropped another surprise hit in "Bonita". Which is okay in my book, not my cup of tea, but preferable to Shawn Mendes, Ariana Grande and pop-EDM IMO. J Balvin could be a star of the 2020s, if he keeps this up.
On a negative note, Cardi B just keeps on climbing the ladder. I don't want her to represent the next generation of music.
I'll take J Balvin instead, Alex

Maybe the late 2010s and early 2020s will comprise their own brief, but unique, era of music.
I'd define this era as being between the summer of 2017 and the summer of 2022.
We're only now beginning to enter the late 2010s era of music. Roughly for the past 4 months or so. We've been in the late 2010s, politically, for well over a year now.

2018 will probs be transitional and lead us to early 2020s culture although I do think the late 10s,early 20s and the real 2020s will all be separate eras, but yeah 2018 especially late 2018 will probs be different than now hopefully.

I disagree. I think musically we've been in late 2010s culture since around 2016. Next year we will see early '20s music which will be distinct from late 2010s and it will be something totally different. The EDM pop that has been everywhere in 2016 is not mid 2010s music, that is part of late 2010s music and we still have many popular songs like that today. Mid 2010s music is something more along the lines of teeny bopper songs by Taylor Swift and Sam Smith/Adele type ballads mixed with some mid 2010s EDM (which is distinct from late 2010s EDM, late '10s had annoying vocal effect mixes as drops). The only music mid 2010s holdover we have had in 2016 was Ariana Grande but even her sound went more into the late 2010s direction in 2016. And trap music is just core 2010s music in general.

Yeah I think by late 2018 we will be in early 2020s culture.
