Subject: Kim Kardashian : "Selfies are dead"

Written By: John Titor on 10/14/17 at 5:29 pm

Kim Kardashian says that the selfie is dead? Say it isn’t so! In a clip for Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Kim played a game of "Would You Rather?" with her sister Khloé Kardashian.  Khloé asks the first question: “Would you rather never be able to post a selfie or never be able to Snapchat again?”

Kim answered, “I would rather never be able to post a selfie again. Take a selfie. Yeah. I kinda feel like, I dunno, selfies are kind of a few years ago.”

I'm going to be honest, I would take everything Kim Kardashian says with a grain of salt. She could be right, selfies may be declining in popularity. However, I would be more willing to hear other people's viewpoint on the matter over Kim Kardashian's. :P

It's never going away. People took selfies all the time before selfie was even a word.

The particular trend of taking a selfie along with the object you intended to take a picture of (e.g. taking a selfie with the Mona Lisa) is probably a trend worth dropping.

I agree with you. However, there is an opposite viewpoint to look at. For whatever unexplainable and utterly perverse reason, there is a demographic of young girls who are influenced by this Kim Kardashian person. Go figure. And if Kim Kardashian declares "selfies are dead", this legion of impressionable followers may listen to her, at least to some degree. Let's hope in this case it is true. Maybe we can finally be rid of this selfie trend and move on to a new era without tourists walking around with selfie sticks and young (and not so young) women taking ridiculous photos with "duck lips" poses.  8-P

Not true. People didn't take selfies when there wasn't the equipment, i.e cell phones, to take them with. Oh, there were the occasional people who took "self portraits" and the like with cameras, mirrors, etc, but these were more difficult to do and more intended to be artsy, stand alone type items  rather than the all-pervasive and meaningless  "selfie" as we know it now.

My cousin had a flip phone, I think it was in 2002, where you could rotate the screen. With the camera on the body and the screen facing your direction (and a dedicated camera button), you could effectively take a selfie with it, and we did used to take them.

There's also the simple method of pointing the camera at yourself and taking the picture. My uncle has one such picture from his trip to Jordan in 1992. I called it "the first selfie" ;D (of course the real first selfie is Robert Cornelius's from 1839).

A flip phone IS a cell phone. I was talking about a time before cell phones entirely. In the 60s, 70s and 80s people didn't walk around taking pictures of themselves, and, unless they were tourists, almost never walked around with cameras.  Occasionally rock stars took pictures of themselves for album covers and such (see Graham Nash's "Songs for Beginners" from 1971 for one such example. He takes a photo of his reflection in a window). Stevie Nicks has recently displayed an array of Polaroids she took of herself in the 70s , but to do so back then was considered unorthodox. It wasn't a regular thing and if people did it they were either looked at kind of funny or, on the other hand, people oohed and aahhed at the ingenuity of it. Nothing like the selfie as we know it now.

Kim can have a fudgeing seat. I've just gotten to the top of my selfie game and I'm not stopping because she looks like she belongs in Madame Tussaud's right now. (and yeah I know she got a dummy. It looks more lifelike than her)

selfies are for people who feel self absorbed with themselves and feel the need to post every pose and post it to their Snapchat or Instagram, That's what Kim Kardashian is about.

Selfies are well and truly alive, selfies with celebrities has now replaced the asking for a celebrity autograph.

Celebrities have been known to charge for autographs (i.e. Madonna and Andrew Lloyd Webber), but one day charging will come soon.

KUWTK is still on air? Oh boy. That IS a problem!  ;D

People won't stop taking selfies, it's convenient. I can see duckface posing and selfie sticks becoming a thing of the past, but not taking a picture of yourself when no one else can take one of you.

That's proof you've met them!

Kim Kardashian is the queen of selfies when her and her sisters keep taking pictures of their hot bodies. ::)
