Subject: Could pop-punk be coming back?

Written By: HeyJealousy on 08/09/17 at 12:43 pm

I saw two subsequent commercials back-to-back: the first was a Macy's back-to-school ad, with a punk cover of "Everybody Wants To Rule The World". The next was a Chuck-E-Cheese ad that sounded punk-ish to me.
Some of you may know the pop-punk scene underground is booming.
It's only a matter of time before pop-EDM and trap give way to something else. So will pop-punk be it? Will we have to wait until' the early 2020s, or as early as next year?

Has there ever been a major genre that died down after a time then became a major genre again? Just wondering because I can't think of any.

There are a lot of awesome songs that deserve success. At the very least, it would add some nice diversity to the charts. ;)

To those of us who often forget it's not 2002, Pop-Punk never died.

I doubt pop-punk will be it but I get the feeling we're gonna get something grungy soon. Perhaps not rock but something more raw and angry.

I would like to see gangsta rap come back myself.  Let's move away from trap and move towards stuff that actually reflects society and the times we live in.

Any chance music like this can come back?

Ebola has a greater chance of becoming mainstream again rather than pop punk ;D.

Garage rock, maybe? Mind you, the garage rock of the Early-Mid 2000s is much more commercialised than it's Mid-Late '60s predecessor.

That's a name of a bacteria.

Ebola is a virus not bacteria.

Anyways, it was just a joke...even though it's not necessarily false ;D.

I hope it will...2007 to 2009 had a huge transition to the 2010s so there has to be a huge transition for the 2020s pretty soon and i hope to think that pop punk could return. It`s still around if you look for it but the new stuff just dosen`t make it to the charts which honestly sucks. :-\\

HeyJealousy, I think you might actually be onto something. I was watching a video on Youtube and this song below was promoted in a Vevo ad. You should take a listen to it:

If pop-punk was to make a return to the mainstream, I wonder if it would be in the form of something similar to this. It's the perfect blend really. It's a politically-charged song and is pretty reflective of the times we live in. It also has rapping in the first and second verses, which would appeal to those who like hip-hop. In a way, it's almost as if this song is representative of a new sub-genre of punk music that is emerging. Maybe Nu-Punk, considering that it blends rapping and punk. :P I've personally never even heard of this band before. It will be interesting to see how successful their album will be, once it's released in October.

Also, on the same topic, I've also noticed a few other things.

*Green Day's "Revolution Radio" is being promoted as a Vevo ad, which is interesting, considering that it was released last year and didn't chart well.

* I was watching a rugby league match on TV last night and Green Day's "Still Breathing" and Blink-182's "All The Small Things" were played at the stadium. The former didn't even chart in the Top-50 at all, so it's interesting that it was played.

It's possible that they may not be signs of a return of pop-punk. Although, with that said, it feels as though punk will be making a return to the mainstream in some form. I just get the vibe that it's going to happen at some point.

I think there's more of a likely hood of Latin oriented music hitting the mainstream than pop punk returning.
