Subject: Sites like Spotify ruined the top 100 charts

I hear many people in the Millennial generation saying they don't care how bad the pop charts are because they have spotify.

You can certainly blame Spotify for corrupting the UK charts, resulting in things like all 16 tracks from Ed Sheeran's Divide placing in the Top 20 simultaneously.

What would you do about that? I just saw the news article and it's ridiculous. I think it's because the rest of the pop charts are so bad that someone like Ed Sheeran can absolutely dominate.
My point is lots of our generation doesn't care about changing pop culture because everything's so atomized and if you complain they say you're lazy and should go to Spotify.

So, what am I supposed to do? Stop listening to what I want to listen too?

That happened on our charts as well. At one point, "Shape of You" was #1, followed by "Castle on the Hill" at #2 and four other songs from the album within the Top 10. I think Spotify is corrupting Top-40 charts, in general. As I mentioned in another thread, the Top-40 charts are not a true reflection of what is and what isn't popular anymore.

I know Pitbull already dominates the hot 100 as he's been doing since 2007 but I hope that Kesha will comeback at us with some bumpin party tunes instead of this slow ballad stuff she's doing. Tik Tok is still a classic.

I mean, people were streaming the crap out of each song ob Divide, so they were certainly prominent, but the serious issue is that most people aren't listening to the non-singles because they specifically enjoy or take interest in them, but rather because they're part of an album they checked out, not a playlist of favourites. The significance of streaming has pretty much undermined much of the importance of promoting singles of merit and instead given major record companies the incentive to just place all their chips on the single most commercially appealing few artists, rather than allowing voices of all kinds have their place.

Well, if you don't listen to the radio, then the Top 40 isn't all that important, is it? :P

No but at least write the networks.
What are you going to say 20 years from now if people asked why Millennial music sucked based on the pop charts?

You can use Spotify but we need to announce why we're using sites like that to the music industry or they'll never get it.

I do follow the pop charts...but only for the UK. They're actually somewhat decent for popular music today, or at least a bit stronger than the United States. That's still not saying much, but there's still some music popular there that America had passed on, like Little Mix's "Power."

Now that Taylor Swift is on Spotify, the radio has zero use.

I still do occasionally, but whenever I do, it only makes me feel depressed that mainstream music has declined as much as it has...

No, why would it be? Pitbull dominates the top 40 every week.
