Subject: Were the late '00s/early '10s an iconic pop culture era?

Written By: bchris02 on 07/04/17 at 12:10 am

Throughout history, pop culture has had its "iconic" moments.  One of them was the mid to late 1960s when the Beatles and rock music transformed pop culture.  Another was in the early '90s when hip-hop arrived.  I think the most recent is the late '00s and early '10s.  It's still hard to believe how quickly electropop sent ringtone rap packing.  By mid 2009, we were almost in a different world compared to 2006.  Lady Gaga was the Beatles of our generation.  God, I miss that era.  What I would give to re-experiencing it.  Spending summer nights at the pool with my boyfriend.  Smoking weed and cigarettes.  Getting drunk.  Listening to Lady Gaga, the Black Eyed Peas, and Britney Spears.  Taking spontaneous road trips, sometimes half way across the country. What a great summer 2009 was.  What I would give to go back.

In a sense, yes, and the 2020s has the potential to be more iconic, more culturally significant and, yes, more fun than anything we seen since at least the '90s.

I agree totally. I think it was a very distinguishable era. That upbeat electro sound was kind of a revelation at the time and felt fresh and new. It felt like we were pushing boundaries with artists like lady gaga and her weird music videos. Overall there was a lot of optimism for the future I think and it felt like we were on  the cusp of something brand new and exciting that was just around the corner even though the era was amazing in its own right despite the economic problems. Too bad when something new came around the corner in 2012/2013 it was not nearly as exciting in my opinion.

My personal favorite year of that era was 2011. It was just a golden, happy, sunny year for me as I made really good friends and was very successful with my ambitions at the time, such as taking part in a stage show that performed all over Ireland and winning arts awards and going down a storm in a talent show with an animated film that I made with my best friend.

I can definitely relate to wanting to go back!

It was loud and fun! I miss the early '10s too.

while the pop culture was fun, the economy was in shambles , stores like KB toys, Circuit city, Sharper image, walden books, Sam goody. All gone.
Malls closed, social media websites ended etc

The early '10s gave us this among many others like it.

The late 00s/early 10s was similar to the early 90s as both had their moments of recession and struggling economy (although the late 00s recession was much worse) yet when it came to things like music they were both seen as upbeat, exciting, and fresh. Hell mid-late 2010s still has yet to top the upbeat tone of the late 00s/early 10s electropop music.

The early '10s was upbeat and that song as well as the electropop era of the late 00s/early 10s is an example of that. Makes me wonder why the mid-late 2010s in music isn't as upbeat and as dancey. Too many slow and emotional boring snore tracks these days. I assume the reason this is the case is just because it's the big trend right now.

Yeah I liked that era, maybe not quite as much as you (I actually prefer circa late '90s-mid '00s R&B/pop myself over late '00s-early '10s electropop) but I still liked it. I was still young and dumb and still thought pop music was actually important LOL. Now I honestly don't really give a crap what's popular. I mean I still play the radio in the car but I don't know pop culture just isn't that big of a deal to me anymore. Now, I worry more about paying my car payment more than if Lady Gaga's latest single is popular. Everything comes and goes, whatever.

Here's my take on iconic late 2000's/early 2010's rap albums that was popping at the time (speaking as black male perspective):

It seems like 00s culture peaked in terms of what the public wanted to hear in the mid 00s to the early 2010s. I remembered when Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Lil Wayne, Common, Jay Z,  and Eminem used to dominate HipHop around this time. And Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift Katy Perry, made great music too.
