I listened primarily to 80s music this year, and top 40 hits did not really show up at my college, so "Gangnam Style" was one of the only hits of 2012 that I was actually familiar with. Additionally, I followed the 2012 US Presidential Election quite closely, so the above video is like the most 2012 thing I can possibly imagine, even though the parody itself isn't that great.

I think I've finally gotten to the point where I don't care how bubblegummy my taste in music is so long as I enjoy it. So far this year, I've listened much more to bands like Steps than art rock groups because I feel that their melodious, carefree optimism is really the only remedy for my ever-present blues next to finding love. I have no desire to listen to depressing, cynical "legitimate" music when there's enough to complain about as is.

Quintessential early 2010s electropop for me, catches up both the sound and the "love & party" obsession of the genre.

2011. Britney Spears - Till The World Ends
Electropop combined with the 2012 end of the world obsession of back then.

2012. Kelly Clarkson - Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)
Empowering song with a slight pop-rock edge to it, as "power songs" a la Katy Perry and Adele, teen pop rock and indie pop all exploded that year.

2013. Miley Cyrus - We Can't Stop
A more subdued song with a minimalistic instrumental, as well as lyrics about standing out and being unapologetic with things like sex and drugs.

2014. Jason Derulo - Talk Dirty
Combines the booty obsession, the "happy-sounding" and the edm influenced by trap of that year.

2015. Justin Bieber - Sorry
Tropical house exploded that year + has that airy, reverberated feel to it a lot of hit songs had back then.

2016. Drake - One Dance
As dancehall inspirations and trap were extremely popular that year.

2017. Camila Cabello - Havana
Has a bit of trap influences in its instrumental + a ""mumbling"" trap rapper as featuring, as well as clear Latin Pop influences (perfect because you know, a certain Latin pop song was freaking huge that year).

Combines trap + airy rnb which both are huge right now.
