Subject: Gen Alpha

Written By: Tyrannosaurus Rex on 04/26/17 at 7:42 pm

Note: This is not a thread that discusses when Y ends and when Z begins. This is just a discussion on how others think the next generation, Generation Alpha, will be like. This is only about them (not us).

Typical definitions of Generation Alpha

2010-2024
2010-2025
2011-2025

What do you (as older members of Generation Z and earlier) personally think of them, even though the oldest members are only about six or seven years old, based on your perspective?

To me, Generation Alpha starts in 2020/2021 and ends at 2035-2038. I will (hopefully) have a child or children born in that time frame.

I hope to have children in this generation! :)

From what I can tell of 2010-2012 borns, they're growing in an era where education is very digitized. The hot trend is "reverse homework" where instead of receiving homework where you solve math problems or write a book report, your homework is to watch your lectures on a computer or iPad, and the classroom is where you solve your math problems.

Because this generation is far too young to be defined, the only thing I know for sure about them is that they are going to make me feel very old when they come of age.

Also, if Gen Alpha goes all the way to the late 2030's, it's possible that I could have grandchildren born in this generation.

A few things about them is that are going to be smaller than the Zeds due to the decreased births. They will be more technologically advanced than the Zeds. They are the first generation not to remember the first black president. They're also the first cohort to have a majority of non-Caucasian folks.

Well if that is the case then like I said I think Gen Alpha starts in 2020/2021 and ends from 2035-2038. Based on that, I will have kids apart of this generation and they will have a vastly different childhood to those born even in the 2010s (Jan. 1, 2010-Dec. 31, 2019). I can't judge them since they haven't been born yet.

Gen Alpha is probably going to be any of the following 4:

2010-2024
2010-2025
2011-2025
2018-2036

And about the end date of Millennials, I sincerely doubt that the generation will end in 1998. I mean look at the common sources - there are only like five sources out of the more than 300 sources that I browsed over the past year or so that used it as a cutoff. Sources take a lot (a period of months or even years) of research and study, and they know a lot better than we do.

Not to mention, it doesn't even sound like a clean or stable (even as an even-numbered-year) cutoff either. Putting every year of the 90's and leaving 1999 out of the picture does sound odd. I wouldn't fret about it too much.

1994, 1996, and 2000 all seem like more stable cutoff years to use, as they were actually the ends of their respected time frames (first half of the 90's, mid 90's, and second millennium).

The definition of Gen Alpha in bold I can agree to (but I still like my definition, 2020/2021 until 2035-2038).

Also, the Gen Y thing was just a personal problem I had with some people giving arbitrary reasons for ending Gen Y at 1997 or 1998. Don't worry though, I'm not fretting about it.

There is a proposed law in Russia that would ban selling cigarettes to people born after 2014. Of course, the likely result of this law is to create a black market of people born 2014 selling cigarettes to people born 2015.  :-X

Tasmania, Britain (really only the doctors), Norway, and Singapore I do believe at one point considered banning selling cigarettes to people born after 1999 (even though in articles they say "after 2000", they mean 2000 and later). If that did happen, there may be a black market where people born in 1999 secretly sell cigarettes to people born in 2000.

Oh I didn't know that. Isn't aspartame the thing they put on the popcorn ceilings in old houses? ;D

Haha it sounds like it would be used for that, but it's a sweetener.  ;D

Damn....unsweetened? 8-P.

Honestly the main reason I gave up pop is because, 15 years ago, I went to the dentist for a check up and I had 3 cavities, all in my lower teeth, and the dentist correctly deduced that it was from drinking too much pop. I gave up pop after that and I haven't had a single cavity since. The sh!t rots your teeth out.

Plus that aspartame crap scares me.

I wasn't talking about soda ("pop"...are you from the Midwest? :P). I was talking about the iced tea...unsweetened 8-P.

Oh, same! Except I only went to the dentist last year. I didn't have dental insurance growing up. Before last year, the last time I went to the dentist was when I was 9. And I didn't grow up in a flossing family either. Disaster!  :-[ I had to pay through the nose to get my teeth fixed last year. Ever since then, like I said above, I avoid sugar, starch, and acidic drinks like the plague. I can now see the hidden costs.  ;D

Edit: oh but water with fast food was a habit I established before my dentist visit. I just always have my water bottle with me. ;D

Slim95, did you see my question?

He's right. Diet Coke contains aspartame which has been said to cause brain cancer. Plus it still contains caramel colour and all that other stuff. If anything the two are pretty much both equally harmful.  :P
It also can play havoc with the stomach, as like other soda drinks.

I have and had plenty, but the more recent cavities are down to the age factor.

I need to stop drinking pop, though. I'm sure I might have a cavity, or two, now.  :o

Sorry I missed it.

Have you ever been to the US? (just asking)

I am from the Midwest, Nebraska to be more specific. And I'm guessing that you must be a Southerner, because only someone from the South would take so much offense at someone drinking iced tea without sugar.  ;)

I knew you were a Midwestner :P.

Oh and I'm definitely not a Southerner. I'm a Northerner (born and raised in New York City)....however, I just don't like unsweetened iced tea ;D.

Ah, OK. I've been down South a few times and they love their sweet tea down there.  Now they probably wouldn't get mad if you ordered unsweetened iced tea down South, more likely they'd just smile and say "Bless your heart," which is their polite and quaint way of saying "you're a dumbass."  ;D

I know. HAHA....I have some Southerner friends and if I ordered unsweetened iced tea they would castigate me ;D.
