This thread is meant to keep abreast of any changes in pop culture, music, etc as we close in on and eventually enter the potentially game-changing summer of 2017. What changes have you noticed since January? Continue posting about changes as we head into May, June and July.

I just hope the summer of 2017 puts in an actual end towards the mid 2010s, since it seems like one of the darkest times to live in recent history. Even when I didn't really have a good time in the early 2010s, at least it still had some brighter pop culture. Let's just hope somebody brings in a new genre that could easily bring in the 2020s with a lighter aspect.

I actually wish there was more topical and truly poignant music. The Top 100 has been so utterly tone deaf to current events.

I hope the new TRL is successful. That would be so awesome for it to be like 2000s again and you can tune into a live show of interviews and performances by celebrities. I miss that. I just don't know it it will be the same or if it will be successful. A comeback of traditional TV programming over YouTube would be pretty awesome!

Thus far the vibe in the air is that we are in a new era, things are changing slowly, but they are happening.
POP culture IS MILES ahead of 2015.
We have successfully escaped the bone chilling years of 2009-2016 and are back
to normal.

Nah, pop culture in 2015 was WAY better than now. We still haven't fully escaped the disaster of 2016, but hopefully we will be out soon. But there are a couple okay songs that are out now.

I see a very slight difference to 2015 because there is more edm and dancehall music now (which in my opinion is bad). It's for the most part still similar though because trap is still popular and never left since 2014 as well as some teen pop. But music and culture is pretty much exactly the same as 2016 right now.

Did you hear Paramore's latest song, "Hard Times"? Allegedly, it's supposed to skyrocket up the charts. There's an 80s aura to it, almost like New Wave. I think the tides are about to turn soon enough, but we'll see....

I'm so sick of pop culture and music constantly referencing the 80s. I thought we were supposed to be in the 90s revival now; didn't the 80s revival already happen in the 2000s? Then why is it still going on even in 2017? ???

80's nostalgia had crumbs, here and there, in 1997 and 1998. There were films like Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion (1997), and The Wedding Singer in 1998. But it didn't explode until 2000/2001, with the whole VH1 I Love The 80's series. That's when it all officially began.
I agree, we should have been in 90's nostalgia fully by around 2016, at the latest.

We already had 90s nostalgia. Only it was completely kid focused instead of adult focused. 90s shows were brought back because of former 90s kids. 80s nostalgia was adult focused but 90s was completely child focused.

I've lived my teen years through all of the 10's and I can honestly it sucked. Wish it could've been more memorable but it was literally so boring. Gonna make my 20s good.
This year has been pretty good for me so far. I'm done with high school and will be traveling a lot during this summer.
Don't know if it's just me but I'm noticing more positive vibes coming through which is what we need.

I'm not noticing anything new, positive, or an improvement in any way in pop culture. I wouldn't be surprised if culture got worse. I am no longer feeling optomistic at all. A lot of these new songs people are claiming are good are just not doing it for me. The fact that there was another terrorist attack recently just doesn't give me hope for anything to be honest. Everybody on this forum seems to love 2017 already but I think it's a very boring year personally.

Considering 80s revival is actually adult I welcome it. All I've seen of 90s revival is children's shows and kid culture nonstop since the late 2000s.

It's the vibe of America becoming great again, lol. But pop culture still sucks. Other than Drake and Jamiroquai's new albums, there hasn't been a lot of good new music. With movies, the only one I watched in theaters this year is "Ghost in the Shell" and I regret spending money on that. I wanted to see Logan and King Kong, and Fast 8. This summer has a promising line up, but I'm most excited about the Blade Runner sequel in October. I still think the single best thing about 2017 so far is Zelda BotW.

The Late Spring right now has some serious 2000's vibes, I do indeed see people talking in person now instead
of being glued to their phone (People still are obsessed with their phones but there seems to be some dropoff)
The whole Trump 100 days so far has changed the paradigm from mid 2010s to late 2010s, things seem lighter
and more poppier in a 2000s sense.

OK. New Jersey doesn't really have a reputation for "hospitality", but I've met some really personable people up from there. I'm from Sc originally, but I know enough New Yorkers (residing in South Florida now) to affirm that the "New York hostility" stigma floating around is just that, a stigma.

By the looks of it, Wonder Woman may turn out to be the film that finally gets the DC Cinematic Universe to get up off the ground, as its critical reception so far is extremely positive. I'm not totally confident about Justice League, since as an ensemble film, it looks much more likely to fall into the same pitfalls that ruined the first three DC Cinematic Universe movies.
Captain Underpants is the first new DreamWorks movie I've had real interest in watching in several years. I loved the books growing up and always wished they could be brought transcribed into animation, so if the upcoming film has even a lukewarm reception, I'll probably go see it.

I don't see a return to the '00s, but I think I can see things starting to get lighter, especially in terms of music. There are some good things happening right now across the major genres and I think music will go back in a more positive direction if any of it sticks. For whatever reason, the music pendulum seems to swing the opposite of the mood of the country.

Yep, I couldn't agree more. I honestly don't understand the appeal of fidget spinners. Why are they even popular? 8-P

Katy Perry's new album is a disaster.
Nothing like Teenage Dream or Prism. A complete disappointment.
Movies in 2017 have been decent though.
Get Out, Logan, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. II, The Fate of the Furious, etc.

Fidget spinners would have been crazy had it been an early 2000's fad.

It was fun for like an hour.
It's more of a social status item, since we live in a very image conscious society. The fidget spinner is essential in maintaining your respect and social status among the under 18 crowd. Don't you want to be a cool kid, Howard?

I don't really think so, I got over that stage, I'm almost in my mid 40's for crying out loud. ::)

The best thing to happen this summer was Taylor Swift releasing her discography on Spotify. Queen!
