Subject: Songs from 2013 that already sound dated
Written By: bchris02 on 04/11/17 at 12:21 am
2013 is commonly considered when the current culture started and a lot of the songs that were popular in 2013 could come out in 2017 and you couldn't tell the difference. However, looking at my 2013 library, there are a few songs that were popular then that actually sound dated. Here are a few. Most of these sound early '10s, which is a sound that is gone now.

If people right now are overestimating 2017's similarities to 2013, people then were overestimating 2013's similarities to 2008-09.

The dance-pop had quite diminished, the edm/trap thing wasn't quite big. We had some disco-like songs. I remember it as a very relaxed year.

EDM feels practically dead now, everything is either trap or really downtempo, perhaps vaguely influenced by trap. Thus, most, if not quite all 2013 songs now sound dated.

2013 was the year I started high school and to be honest while yes some genres of music aren't popular, let's not act like 2013 was some different world to 2017.

I agree. The dominant culture the established itself in 2013 remains to today. The songs I posted in the OP were some of the last of the early '10s sound that was popular in the mainstream. Songs that have come out with that sound since haven't really become too popular. I really liked this one from 2016.

If that would have come out in 2011, it would have been a chart topper. It didn't get much attention though in 2016.

Bebe Rexha is just one of my many celebrity wives 8). Anyways, I don't see any indications of a cultural change (2017 and later) so far though. Do you?

I don't think that's what the OP was saying. He was just asking what 2013 songs could sound dated by now.

You're right though that 2013 is still somewhat closer to today, but I don't think that will be true by the end of the year.

Why?
As the decade progresses, we will get further and further from the mid 10s. Besides, the pop culture is long overdue.

I'm glad EDM is dead but I have a disdain for 99.8% of trap rap.

Igk3MD7hltU To be fair, this song didn't exactly sound modern in 2013 either. I remember how in early 2014, I said that this song was dated because of how 2008-2009 it sounded, and some guy was like, "But 2009 is still modern today."

How the heck is EDM dead? There are literally 5 songs in the top 20 that are EDM (6 if you count Shape of You as EDM, which has been number one forever now) and three of them are in the top 10. Chainsmokers are still mega popular with their new tracks on YouTube being viewed by by millions in a matter of days. Closer which has been number one for like over 10 weeks is still in the top 30. Please explain?

Just type in the Chainsmokers on YouTube and see how many views they have for 6 songs they just uploaded last week... And so many from other artists and groups as well. EDM has only begun, it seemed like it exploded with popularity last year and will continue to do so into the late 2010s...

2013 is early 2010s, at least the first half is (numerically and culturally).

That may have been me, and I would still agree with this sentiment (of 2013 and 2009 not being that far off from each other).

There are honestly no songs from 2013 that sound dated. I don't know why people think the electro pop style sounds dated when we still have songs today that use elements of electro pop like the popular edm songs (or just electronic sounding songs in general). The last song that sounds dated to me is this song from 2011. Probably because it sounds a little 00sey. This could have passed in 2007 or 2008, in fact I actually thought it was from then before checking the date of the release.

I mean electronic dance music, i.e., the stuff that was still everywhere in 2013. You'd be a bit harder pressed to find stuff like "One Last Time," "Want to Want Me," or "Wake Me Up." There have been a few exceptions, but nowadays we're closer to where America was in the 90s and 2000s, with maybe one or two current hits being uptempo electronic dance and the rest being rap, rap-influenced, or just slow. "Shape of You" and the Chainsmokers' songs are of that downtempo type of pop that gradually garnered popularity during the mid-2010s and is now ubiquitous.

Oh okay but I still consider the Chainsmokers EDM even if they don't make dance music. But you're right that electronic music these days is at a much slower tempo than it was in the early 2010s.
Speaking of this, I prefer today's edm than the early 2010s. Because in the early 10s it sounded more fake and autotuned while now we have groups that are more serious and specialize in that sound such as the Chainsmokers.

No, it was Inlandsvägen1986.
