Subject: Start of Generation Alpha
Written By: d90 on 11/01/16 at 9:42 pm
The older Gen Zers born in 1998 are old enough to be parents to those Born in 2016. Should those born after 2016 be considered generation Alpha? or should it begin in 2018 since that's the first year those born in 2000 turn 18.

Gen Alpha begins around 2007-2012 from the definitions I've seen
Also your Gen Z definition is off by like 2-3 years. Nobody else uses 1998 as a starting date, it's always 1995/96.
2007 I think is way too soon to start Gen Alpha. Those born in 1995 and 1996 were only 12 at the oldest back in 2007.

Gen Alpha starts anywhere from 2024-2026. They haven't been born yet. The babies of now are still Z.

I'd say Gen Alpha starts in the midish 2010s (2013-2016). 2007 is too early and is more of a late Gen Zer year than an Alpha year. But I can get behind the idea of 2012 to 2016/17 being where Gen Alpha begins.

I think they apply as Generation Z, since they're 4-9 years as of 2016. Most of them are already in elementary school, for crying out loud. Gen Alpha should've started around 2016/17, since they would have most of their childhood memories in the 2020s. Plus, most of them would have younger 90s kids/older 2000s kids as their parents.

Seriously, it's still several years too early to mark the beginning of a Generation that hardly even exists yet. Frankly, we still don't know precisely the start of Generation Z. This thread is generationology at its worst.

They'd still have memories of this horrible time period that will according to astrology last until 2024-2026.

I agree. People still can't agree on what is the beginning year for Gen Z. And it's even crazier that none can agree on a Gen Z end year (I keep hearing about when Gen Z "supposedly" starts, but not when it's supposed to end). A generation is usually defined by the events that they'll experience and grow up with. If Gen Alpha were to start they'd all be little kids. Right now there aren't any events that'll be relevant towards Alphas just yet along with the lack of defining Alpha characteristics. So I say to give it another 5-10 (and possible more) years before anyways pops up.

I don't think they would remember a lot from this decade, if they were born between 2013-2016. They'll mostly be early-mid 2020s kids. Even if they do remember this decade, they wouldn't understand the politics (which is why people think it's bad) until they're preteens.

Let's stick with the Plurals (Gen Z) first. I'm getting a headache just reading this! :\'(

I've seen articles that start Alpha at 2010. Oh, and the previous generation (Homelanders) wouldn't be their parents, that would be the Millennials since they are the ones are having children.

I've seen the ending between 2009 and 2015 which if you use 1995 as the beginning then you get 16-20 years or 9-15 if 2001 (less likely) is the start.
In addition, not only are generations defined by the events that they'll experience, but even pop culture as well. A song or even a movie can have an impact on a generation and not just someone personally.

Well they do. There's actually articles about them and what they will be doing in the future.

Oh, well I seen it starting around 2010. Many articles close the Homeland (Z) cohort around 2009.

I don't know why people are already thinking of Gen Alpha, when the earliest members are newborn babies. It's WAY too early to say something like that.

Yes, too early. At least discuss what's actually there.

I don't talk or debate about generations anymore, but I have a story I must share. I saw this medical commercial about Baby Boomers earlier today, and my dad (born in 1966) was sitting next to me, and I tell him that my aunt (born in 1964) is the last of the Baby Boomers, and he nodded his head and said no, and I was like "wait, but I thought 1965 was the start of Gen X", and he was like "no I'm the end of the Baby Boomers"... "I'm on the cusp of Boomers and Gen X", and I like "WOW", well dad, we're 30 years apart, and me born in 1996 myself feels like I'm on the cusp of "Y & Z" like I said before, the average span for a generation is 15 years, and parents who have their children are usually 2 generations apart from each other which is 30 years! Isn't age 30 the average age parents have children? That's amazing! My dad doesn't even agree that he's part of Gen X and he's born in 1966!!!! He thinks he's the tail end of the Baby Boomer generation!

Well, my dad was born in 1967 and he absolutely considers himself an Xer. So does my mom (born 1969).
However, I believe it's the Xers born in the 70s who get more attention, and define the identity and stereotypes of that generation moreso, to the point where someone born in 65-69 may not relate to them as much.
My dad had his childhood in the 70s and teenhood in the 80s. But when most people think of "Gen X", they tend to think of people who were children in 80s, growing up with things like Transformers, GI Joe, He-Man, and maybe TMNT for the later Xers. My dad has no connection to any of that.
He grew up loving the Star Wars trilogy, but the latter two films came out when he was 13-16, to the point where his affection for them may feel a bit different and not quite as "weepy and sentimental" as that of 70s-born Xers. :P
In terms of 80s formative experiences, my dad is more of a Marty McFly than, say, a Goonie. ;D

1993 is the beginning of Generation Alpha. It ends in 1993 too, maybe 1994.
