Subject: Do you miss the early 2010s?
Written By: Slim95 on 08/30/16 at 3:55 pm
I'm wondering who already misses the early 10s? I personally don't miss it yet except for maybe 2010. 2010 is the last year I have some nostalgia for and the last year that feels dated. 2011 and after all feel modern to me. I know for you younger people out there still in their teens you probably miss the early 10s now.

I only miss 2010 and 2011. 2012 and after that was pretty much lame to me. I'm not very proud of saying that I like the 2010s, since I don't like its political and pop cultural atmosphere in general. Although, I'm okay with being a teen throughout most of this decade. At least I don't have to force myself into watching all the "family friendly" entertainment, since it's full of terrible innuendos and fandoms that should rather watch more adult entertainment, imo.

I do. Mainly just 2010-2011 now. I miss my early 20s fresh out of high school. Unlike 2009, 2010-2011 especially actually had a specific feel. A lot of memorable hits were released during those years, to. 2012-2013 were more the best years of my life, online social wise. The early 2010s are also the last years my best aunt was present.

Wow. So, I guess you only liked your early childhood. I thought you kinda like the mid-late 2000s, sometimes. Or maybe I'm mistaken from your Personality Cafe posts.

The early 2010s were the last years when Steve Jobs was present, despite dying on October of 2011.

I definitely like the mid 2010s more than the early 2010s. I also don't like the 2010s in general either. I'm sure I'll get some nostalgia for it in the future but the only early 2010s year (or part early 2010s year) I truly liked was 2013.

No, I don't miss the early 10's.
I do miss the late 00's though. Like 2008 to 2010, it was kind of fun to read all the doom-and-gloom articles from click bait articles, and book sellers, trying to peddle their product. Telling everyone that the world was ending, and that the economy was headed for a 1930's type scenario. ;D 8) 8)

Man, I wanted to build a tent and a bunker! So many missed opportunities. :.shakes head:.
I am kidding though. All I mean is that it was fun, in a dark way, to watch Youtube videos of how the world was ending, and how the financial markets were collapsing. I hope it never happens.

I went through a hardcore communist phase. My best friend started believing in the Illuminati and doomsday theories. I watched the videos with him and laughed at the "Kanye West says '666' if you play this song in reverse", but in the back of my head I felt like the 2012 doomsday thing might come true. A lot of other people dwelved into other conspiracy theories. It's funny to look back on, but I won't ever be nostalgic for such a gloomy and dark period ;D

I miss 2010 and 2011 only. 2012 was the worst year of my life, and since then, the things that happened that year affected my life a lot, and the way I think. Things have improved since then though. 2013 was fine the first half, and really boring the second half. 2014 was alright, I liked 2015 mostly, and 2016 is alright.

I feel the same way. Although, I felt like 2013 was better on the second half. The first half felt like hell to me, since I had to deal with a lot of personal stuff that didn't really make me social a lot.

I really don't get of how people believe those Illuminati theories. They're just really pathetic to watch, and they tend to drive people insane with their provocative backwards logic.

Oh yes, definitely! For most of the pop culture and my high school years. Sure, my personal life in college has been better, but I still adore the pop culture though. These last couple of years have felt very dark politically and lifestyle wise. The best thing about the last couple of years has been Netflix. Sports has always been good though especially college football, NFL, and the NBA. 2010-2014 (except for spring/summer 2013) will be looked back as very memorable years of my life. Getting to make friends in high school and know a lot of people in my youth ministry for 4 years was a blast. I also liked how fresh the music and artists were at the time as well, including 2010 as a whole and late 2013/early 2014 for music, then of course, the fresh movies that 2012 and 2013 offered were some of the best in cinema history.

The only late 2000's year I miss is 2007. 2008 & 2009 not so much, although summer 2009 was pretty fun for me. Anything evolving middle school was not cool for me. 2008 was overall a decent year pop culturally with some exciting moments but still, it was too much of a transitional year for society and my personal life in general.

I think it just seems like nobody likes their middle school years, unless they had a favorite year or so. I tend to ignore my personal life from 2012/early 2013, since it didn't gave me a lot of great memories to start with.

I absolutely miss the early 2010s, especially the very early 2010s in particular. Even though the basic social framework was the same as it is now, there was still a much healthier balance of technology, social interaction, and mannerisms that actually made sense. YouTube was still in its golden age, and both the Angry Video Game Nerd and the Nostalgia Critic were still in their primes. Fashion was much more neutral and diverse; side buzzes, neo-fade cuts, and nu-males were not dominant trends yet. The early 2010s certainly aren't the greatest era for popular culture ever, but as far as the 21st century is concerned, it was still a pretty satisfying time to be alive.

I love my middle school years. It is by far my favourite period of my life. Especially Grade 7 (2007 - 2008).

I had an iPod Touch in early 2010 and a Samsung Galaxy S by late 2010 and I don't miss it! It was amazing for its time, but iPod Touch couldn't open 80% of websites because it didn't have Flash and it blew up opening Excel files, no multitasking so I couldn't go on MSN etc.
Samsung Galaxy S was just a laggy mess. It was the wild west of Android too, when it was just Android 2.3 and anything and everything was allowed on the Play Store lol.

I miss it severely. The late 2000s and early 2010s were the highlight of my life. To this day, no years have come close to late 2009, 2010, and 2011. My life went to crap when I moved back to my small hometown in 2012 and went through reparative therapy. Those days to me seem almost like a dream that is too good to be true. It's hard to believe my life was every that good and ever will be again.

Culturally, yeah. I can't say I was really into the music, even back then (though there were some songs from 2010, that I enjoyed), but I do miss when there wasn't all this tension and extremism going on, and when technology felt more balanced. However, when it comes to my personal life then, it was a pretty tough time for me. Especially after I changed schools at the beginning of my junior year in high school.

Today I was watching the video "Remember 2011" and I realized I have zero nostalgia for 2011. Everything feels really recent to me.

But then I watched "Remember 2010" and here I actually do feel nostalgia and it does feel like a long time ago and pretty dated. It's funny how that works.

No the early 2000s were definitely the prime years. Same as with the early 10s. Those are the most definitive and I disagree that the early years are related to the previous decade. This certainly isn't true for the 10s or the 2000s.

I don't remember the early 2010s being the prime of the decade. I guess you could think that because of the introduction of the iPad. But it wasn't really mainstream until late 2012/13. I certainly do. Electro pop, Dubstep, Lady Gaga, Tablets, flat and bright colour designs are all some of the things I think about when I think of 2010s and they are all from the early 2010s (and some relevant today too). Definitely for the 2010s the early 10s are the most definitive for me. As for 2000s, the mid 2000s can also define the decade but still the early 2000s are the most definitive. Yeah the early part of a decade can count as its prime, man. If its good, why ignore it? Not to say you shouldn't point out its influences.

You probably don't see it because your a mid 2000s male. I'll tell you as a hardcore Early 2000s male that the Early 2010s were spectacular. A lot of memorable hits were released, there was a noticeable vibe that was winter like, no major negativity and Cartoon Network made a surprising comeback that snuck up on you.

You're right. The mid 10s are much blander. It feels like there is a lack of culture in the mid 10s. A 2010s party in the future would probably be more likely to play "Party Rock Anthem" than "Hello" lol.

2012 when Gangnam and Teenage Dream Deluxe Edition came out was the peak of the entire decade. Best year to turn legal! Except the part where you play Kid Icarus after a hangover. Eek! :-X

You're right. The mid 10s are much blander. It feels like there is a lack of culture in the mid 10s. A 2010s party in the future would probably be more likely to play "Party Rock Anthem" than "Hello" lol.

I definitely miss 2013 as that was the best year of my life and the last year I felt like I was truly in my childhood. I was 11 that year just transforming from elementary to middle school. 2013 was the year where I meant most of my friends today. Basically late 2012-all of 2013 was the best period in my life.

2010 feels like another world to me mostly because my personal life is so different. My life was actually on the upswing going into 2010 and I was excited for where it was headed. The very turbulent era that was the second half of '09 for me had ended. I was settling into a status quo that I was happy with. I was living in a major east coast city and was openly gay. I did have a failed relationship during that era but I was not too invested in him so it didn't hurt me too bad. I actually felt like I was starting to develop my own identity at that time. I really, really miss that era. It's hard to believe things turned out the way they did. Give me 2010 over 2017 any day.
Culturally I can see your point. 2010 feels dated but not totally disconnect from today. Compared to today it feels a lot like the early '00s did from 2008/09.

2010 was the year when the last building blocks were being put in place for the 2010s. Try to imagine this time without The Walking Dead, Adventure Time, the iPad, Instagram, the blind-bagged Lego Minifigures line, and Google TV. We would still be living in the earliest part of the late 2000s. So yes, 2010 feels dated, but we're not too disconnected from that year in this time.

I was honestly surprised when I looked up the Instagram release date and it was released in late 2010, so it wasn’t even out for most of 2010. :o If I was the same age I was now in 2010 I wouldn’t have an Instagram or Snapchat (which came out in late 2011)

I would disagree. For you though, this goes back to that thread #Infinity posted about the effect childhood has on cultural perceptions. I was born in 1985 and feel that the early '90s and late '90s were different worlds. People born in 1975 usually don't feel the same way. It makes since that the early '00s and late '00s would feel very different to you. They really weren't that disconnected though.

I don't really miss other than for a few things like YouTube when it still had an alternative feel, Pokemon black and white series, but other than that not really. I had some good memories of that time period for sure but if you would've told me people would refer to the early 10s as "happy times" I would've laugh because I remember a lot of people bashing current pop culture at time on YouTube and on the fourm sites. When it comes to hip-hop I agree it was way better back then while I didn't care for most of the popular artist at the time you still had J Cole, Jay Electronica, Logic, B.O.B, Lupe fiasco ( despite how poorly received Lasers was), Big Sean and Kendrick.

Yes I do. It appears as a long time ago.
Think about it:
- Windows 7 was still installed on most PCs worldwide & XP was still supported until April 2014!
- Windows 8.0 was slightly different than 8.1 and very different than 10.
- Windows Phone was still a thing.
- Office 2007 & Office 2010 have a better UI imo than later versions like 2013, 2016, 360.
- Flat UI and website design was still not as huge as today and restricted to W8, Windows Phone 8.x and a few websites.
- Most new cars in 2010-2014 looked much better than the newer models. The VW Jetta was bland but not ugly like the newest one, ditto for Audis. Citroens looked better, today they're just too weird. Today I only like a few models. Fords of 2018 definitely look weird.
Present-day culture makes 2010-2014 seem as a saner time. Politics in the US was better generally. My country is still bad politically, although we have higher salaries.
BTW, just watched some NEW MTV hits and so far 2018 seems kinda cool to me, honestly it's very reminding me of that 2013- early 2014 sound. So maybe music is improving again, sounds better than 2015-2017 crap.

I guess it's here to stay. It's much easier to design flat vs skleuromorphism (sp?).
As for phones, in my part of the world iPhone declined in popularity after the switch to flat iOS gui. But maybe people here just got fed up with the high prices for less choice. Some Chinese brands got big here circa 2014-15 but declined in popularity (Huawei). Samsung has stayed the most popular Android brand.
Windows Phone/Mobile was still relevant in the early 2010's but it's gone. The Windows phone shown really makes the We Are Young music video look dated. Ironically, the flat icons make more sense on a phone rather than in a PC start menu.
Well at least Nokia is back as a brand. What I miss is different sizes and designs of smartphones. Look at any mobile phone store now and all brands and models look alike - same sizes and mostly same designs. Back in 2010-2013 you had more options in terms of size and design.
For music I like the new US releases, but still prefer the early 2010s. However it's an improvement over the second half of 2014, 2015, 2016 and first half of 2017. ☺ Locally, Eastern European music is totally terrible compared to the early 10s, especially pop and R'n'b. No singing just autotuned random words and sounds.
Rihanna, Katy Perry, Lana, Gaga, Adele, Bruno Mars, Justin, etc. all had some of their strongest hits in the early 2010s. (Bruno Mars is arguably still going strong).
Maroon 5, Carly Rae J, Fun., Gotye's hits were huge in the summer of 2012. You couldn't avoid them if you tried! Too bad Call Me Maybe proved to be better enjoyed at lower doses as it got very overplayed. However, I still like some remixes of the song you can find online: https://pecah.ndas.se/download-mp3/download/45033312/call-me-maybe-remix.html
Lorde was big in summer/fall of 2013 with Royals. Pharrell was also big in 2013 and early 2014 with Blurred Lines, Get Lucky and Happy

This was one of the only songs I enjoyed from the early and middle of the 2010s.

Well you should dislike current music as well? It's nothing like the emo era.

I do. There's far fewer songs I like this decade compared to now, and this includes non-emo songs for both decades.

I need to start making a early 2010s playlist immediately. Every Drake hit, Nicki, DJ Khaled, Wayne, Big Sean, Miguel, etc

Tbh besides Nicki I don't remember hearing them in the early 2010s. Drake already had presence in 2009, but the very first time I've legit heard of him was actually in his collab with Rihanna in 2010 and it sounds nothing like his recent songs (or Rihanna ones either for that matter) ;D

Haha, I remember those too ;D Tho tbh I do miss her red-haired phase/LOUD era, she seemed so happy and having so much fun back then, everything so pink and colorful :)

Really Wayne was everywhere in the early 10s. 2010 was one of his biggest years despite being locked up most of the year.

I sure do. I was 22-25 back then and had a blast with pop culture (I didn't like current hits in the 90s and most of the 00s).
As someone else stated, the simplicity, but I think I can not reinstate this enough! 2015 was the year when politics became a huge topic with the youth and pop culture, to where now you see everyone's political views on movies, games, songs, ect. and I HATE that! When I watch a show or play a game, I don't want to think about politics or the current world problems, I want to turn my brain off! And all this talk about politics everywhere prevents me from doing this since it just makes me more stressed.
But whatever, politics aside, I miss the simpler, fun internet. Now I personally feel the internet was at it's golden age in the 2000s, but 2010's gave us some pretty cool stuff too! Youtube around this time was amazing! I would so like to have 2010 youtube back... 2010 was also the year when the ps3 and xbox 360 (the last generation of video games that didn't feature an absurd amount of DLC, political drama, incomplete games, ect.) were still up and running.
And now finally, the last thing I miss from the 2010s is the music! I don't think there has ever been a generation in history where the music is as bland, monotone and soulless as it is now, it's ridiculous! 2010 had the dubstep craze a lot of people disliked, but I actually really liked dubstep, way better than those trap songs from lil yachty or future we have now.
