Subject: do you think the 2010s will be a split decade??

Written By: sonic2005 on 08/04/16 at 5:37 pm

there's already been a shift in tone since late 2014( beginning with the events of ferguson) but with the upcoming election regardless if trump or Hilary wins theres gonna be some HUGE changes these next few years do you think the changes will be so drastic that the late 10s will seem like a completely different decade kinda like the 60s, the 90s,(and to a lesser extent the 2000s)?

I strongly doubt it. 2015 and even 2016 are really not fundamentally very different from 2010, they're just a mostly negative progression of foundations already laid down there.

It is possible for the late 2010s to be significantly different from the first several years of the decade, a lot like the late 90s, but even that is still rather up in the air.

The only truly split decades in the past century, in my opinion, are the 1940s and the 1950s. The 40s are obvious because they're divided between World War II and the Cold War, while the 50s are split between the general continuation of the late 40s and then the beatnik/Elvis/Marilyn Monroe/greaser/rock & roll 50s.

No. Just no.

It could happen, it could not. No way of predicting the future.

If Trump wins, then it would definitely be a split decade, but that's not looking very likely.

It's possible but I don't think so. I think the changes will be gradual like they were from the beginning of the decade. But nobody knows for sure.

No. I don't think so. The current atmosphere right now began way back in 2011 and it's not that different from today. However, it could happen since this election is huge.

The 2010s has been pretty consistent so far. Sure there were a few  changes (obvious being how the early 2010s was more upbeat and colorful while the mid 2010s is more depressing and nerve racking), but besides those changes it's been pretty consistent.

The last consistent decade was the 1980s. 1990s/2000s had some rapid changes (late 1990s and 2000s can't be compared to the early 1990s and early 2000s for example), but the 2010s may end up being another consistent decade.

Yeah I think the 2010s will be like the 1980s and be a relatively consistent decade.

Well it's 2019 and the poster was right!  :o The 2010s were very much a split decade! You can easily make the argument the mid 2010s era didn't exist and the decade can be divided in two, with the second half era starting in mid 2015. This is especially true politics-wise when Trump came into the picture politically in mid 2015 and stirred things up. But some early 2010s trends STILL lingered on into 2015. But in 2016 everything changed. So absolutely YES the 2010s was very much a split decade oddly enough! It was also consistent at the same time, but not as consistent as the 1980s because of the change in politics so while it was pretty consistent, it was still a split decade too. You can divide the decade into two distinct eras, not three. You can easily argue there was no such thing as mid 2010s, just early and late 2010s.

its crazy how light hearted the early 10s was and how dark and gritty 2014-2019 was

I know, right? The early 2010s (at least in the Western world) were relatively carefree compared to the late 2010s.

The political climate in 2012 wasn't as reactionary or polarizing as 2016.

Hipster/indie music, electropop, and explosive pop anthems dominated the early 2010s music scene while moody pop, mumble rap, and trap were popular in the mid-late 2010s.

People still relied on MP3s, iTunes and terrestrial radio for new music in the early 2010s while people in the late 2010s mostly used streaming platforms to listen to any music they want.

It's probably one of the most culturally split decades ever.

I don't think it was the most split decade ever in the 1960s way, but yeah. Especially with time and in hindsight it will be especially hard to fathom that 2010 and 2019 were part of the same decade.

Eh... the first half of 2014 was not EVEN DARK AND GRITTY. But the second half of 2014 was a start and then BAM 2015 and 2016 came in lightning speed. So you could make a strong argument that there wasn't even a mid 2010s.(Even tho I still think there was)

2009-2015 kinda felt like it's own, then 2015-2020 felt like an era...
OR you could say 2009-2016 and 2017-2020, if your an American solely.

Indeed, the 2010s were solid as solid can be.

In order to do that you will need a space-time continuum?

Late 2014 is, in retrospect, when I noticed a cultural shift starting too. That's when you had more polarized politics starting (SJWs vs alt-right, Gamergate, ISIS, etc.), mumble rap blowing up, memes changing from unassuming stuff like rage comics to "post-ironic" "self-aware" "deep fried" memes, people starting to talk about memes in real life (whereas before it was seen as cringey), depression increasing among young people, Millennial teen culture gradually phasing out, Zoomer teen culture gradually phasing in, etc.

By 2016, there was no turning back to the vibes of 2010-2013. When I graduated high school in 2013, I didn't realize it, but in retrospect I was saying goodbye to an era and vibes to which we can never return. :o

I agree, 2010 to early 2014 is different from late 2014 onward. I would also say that late 2018 onward is different from late 2014 - early 2018.

I remember there was a minor cultural shift in Late 2018-early 2019 (as early2010sguy pointed out), as I saw more and more people wearing Airpods, TikTok became a huge cultural phenomenon (thanks to combining the DNA of Vine and Musical.ly), and the "nobody: no one: not even a soul" (or other prompts like that) trend became the main template for internet memes.
