Uh... Those songs sound early 00's? ??? In what universe? Both the Trinidad James and Meghan Trainor songs sound straight outta 2005 and the Sia song sounds around 2009-2011 (maybe). If music sounded early 00's again then maybe I would enjoy the newer radio hits or at least tolerate them.

Well, this decade seems to have some retro feels. So, I don't really think it matters so much whether it sounds like the late 70s or the early 2000s.

Some parts of it look just like the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s if you squint hard enough.

With politics and such? I guess it's related whenever you talk about racial violence to this day.

Meghan Trainor's song "No" doesn't sound 2000s at all. It sounds like a 2016 song trying to hard to sound like early 2000s that it sounds superficial. Songs that try too hard to mimic the sound don't sound old or retro at all.
2016 is on the whole very mid 2010s It's the worst year of the mid 2010s though.

2016 reminds me of a darker version of the year 2000. Musically they are similar, like with the Meghan Trainor song and Blink 182 being popular again. Plus there is the Pokemon Go fad. Most of all, they are the last years of Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. We'll see in November if Donald Trump wins after a recount in Florida. But this year is a lot more mean spirited and there's a lot of anger and hatred, while 2000 had a much happier and peaceful vibe. The race wars and rising crime rates, and growing fears reminds me of 1992 when the L.A. riots were happening as a response to the Rodney King verdict, and it was also around the peak of the crack epidemic. This year also seems to have one horrific news after another, almost every week. The only bad news event I can think of in 2000 was the USS Cole bombing.

Meghan Trainor's song doesn't sound like it's from 2000... It sounds like a 2016 song. Songs that try to sound old fail at that.

Many songs do. I still dislike the song (the rhythm of the song) and would be ashamed if someone compared it to the glory of the early 2000s. >:(

I don't hear a lot of mid 2010s songs sounding like Y2K era pop, while putting in more aero sounds.

Again, it doesn't sound like Y2K era. It sounds like a poor imitation. And many songs that are popular sound different than mid 2010s songs. The OP of this thread showed those examples.

Yeah, but he showed it as a way if those songs sounded like they came from the early 2000s. Not as a way of debunking whether they sounded like that or not.

More like circa 2000-2001 Britney
1999 teeny bopper music (with the exception of maybe BSB's larger than life) sound less explosive, had less synth instruments compared to their 2000-2001 counterparts
When people say say Meghan's "No" sounds early 00s, they usually refer to this5fugLhNbwoY which was released in 2001

I said it before and I will say it again. "No" sounds like a 2016 song that tries to do a cheap imitation for early 2000s music. It ends up not working out imo.

I'll say this: No could of come out between 2000-2002 but that was not the dominant style of urban music as it would become around 2004-2005. Not enough Neptunes beats.

Really? The Neptunes absolutely dominated 2000-2003. 2004 was really when they declined, or at least changed their style and passed their commercial golden age.

Oh yeah, that's what I was saying. "No" doesn't have enough of the Neputes beat to be early 00's. It's more typical mid 00's urban music.

I can agree with this. This year feels more like 2000 than 2010, albeit a darker version of 2000. Mind you, I don't look back on 2000 with the fond memories a lot of people have for that year. A lot of people today seem to remember 2000 as being a happier and more peaceful year than it actually was.
The biggest difference between today and 2000 is, and JordanK1982 will attest to this, is pop punk is nowhere to be found. There has been some attempts at comebacks for bands like Good Charlotte and Blink 182, but those have ended up more like New Kids On the Block's 2008 "comeback" as opposed to genuine revivals.

When I think of 2000, I think of a super laid back, fun, and innocent year. One of the most happiest and innocent years. I do remember it being fun, simple, and laid back as a 5 year old. Pokemon was huge that year. I don't think 2016 is like 2000 simply because the vibe is totally different. I like the stuff that came back from 2000 but the mood now is too depressing to be similar to 2000. I think the reason 2000 was so much fun is because it was the first year of the new millennium, the Y2K scare was over, everything felt new and exciting and fun. 2000 sounded like a cool year to be in as well. I have a feeling 2020 will have a similar effect as 2000, and be a cool fun year too simply because the name "2020" sounds so cool lol. I hope it does too!

2000, for me, was much like 2016. A dark, depressing year, but not near as dark and dire as 2013 and 2014 were for me.
If you were bullied back then...and went to a school with bomb and gun threats...and were such a victim you were actually excused from school because of threats...its hard to remember those as good times.

Yeah I can understand that. It depends on your personal circumstance. But as a 5 year old, it felt kind of fun and carefree lol. I remember we still had that old school computer (white boxed monitor) with Windows 98 on it and very, very slow dial-up internet. Our computer was mostly used for games and looking at old Windows 98 screensavers. It generally wasn't used for the internet lol. My brother was trading Pokemon cards with his friends and I thought the cards were so interesting and cool, he never let me touch them. I thought Diskmans looked so high-tech and futuristic at the time, I was jealous of my sister having one and I wanted one. It was expensive at the time. CDs looked so cool back then haha. I started Kindergarten in 2000, it was quite a big step for me. Our pet hamster died and that kinda sucked. But for the most part, I felt really happy that year.

Good to hear. I was 5 in 1990 and I see that as a very happy, carefree year. I really don't know what having to deal with teen and adult problems that year was like. It was a very violent time in this country with the crack epidemic and gang violence at an all time high so I am sure for many it sucked. For me, 1990 was a happy time.

I would have been suspended back then as well. There was a zero tolerance policy for fighting. I was suspended once for fighting back actually. Unfortunately, that policy usually ended up punishing the victims more than the bullies. Hopefully things have changed in public schools today.

I wish this was true, but unfortunately it's not. People still get suspended today just for fighting back after they were bullied. It truly sucks because just letting a faculty member handle the situation doesn't always work out. I had friends and I even knew people who got suspended just for self-defense thanks to Zero tolerance.

I tried to do that last year, but my mom talked me out of it. Besides, I wasn't a minor anymore, so there would be legal consequences. Also, the people who hurt me only did so emotionally, so it wouldn't be an eye for an eye, more like a kidney for an eye.

I just turned 21 in 2000, so I was really enjoying that year. I was going out to bars and clubs a lot. I also got my first cell phone that year, one of those old Nokias. I also remember carrying around a diskman and a book of CD'S around in my backpack. I also bought a Nintendo 64 that year, and really got into the Ocarina of Time.
In my personal life, 2016 actually has been one of my better years. I just took a trip to Japan with my family, and in April I went on a cruise with my wife to the Bahamas. There has been a lot of decent movies coming out, and my playlist is already pretty long. I also finally found a Wii U game I enjoy, Hyrule Warriors.

Actually 1978, but in December. Yeah, I feel pretty old now. I'll be 40 in just over 2 years.

Yeah, they were in my life only because I was forced to hang out with them, and our reasons for fights were really vapid and childish, like French fries and Justin Bieber.
Our situation was the weirdest, like something straight out of an indie black comedy.

The strange thing is that they were good at looking like a bunch of functional human beings, but their masks crumbled when I was with them.

Do you remember a certain flamewar that ArcticFox started? He was weirded out that these people called me a certain insult that people usually only use for females.

Since 2015 had already ended and with this year almost over with so much going on, I can say my prediction was correct.

There were definitely changes in 2015. But they weren't "huge" changes. However a couple things did change.

Well those small changes can be considered huge changes. I mean for one, the shootings and bombings have absolutely went overboard since I made that thread and that the atmosphere is truly dark.

Yeah but the atmosphere felt kind of dark in 2014 too after the Ferguson event. But 2016 is definitely the darkest year of the 10s so far.

Well you're right about that, and that would pretty much be the first small change.

I just noticed this post and I have to disagree. Pop Punk that isn't Emo-infused is bigger than it's been since the mid 00's. While Good Charlotte's comeback is limp and pathetic, blink's new album actually knocked Drake's Views off the no. 1 spot on Billboard (their second no. 1 album since TOYPJ from 2001. Also with rave reviews praising their comeback as excellent, which it is) and Bored to Death has been a massive, massive hit. With Tom out of the window, blink truly have a genuine revival (instead of whatever the f*ck they tried to pull in 2009-2011... 8-P) and many people are stoked. Green Day just released a new song that, while at first I thought was kinda lame, has really grown on me and it's the first time since Warning that I've genuinely liked a Green Day song. While American Idiot was whiny, lame and deceitfully advertised itself as political while being the complete opposite, Bang Bang has lyrics that truly feel like they speak for something relevant to the present and they're a sentiment that I really get behind with all this gun-violence and narcissism that plagues the 2010's. Hopefully the rest of the album follows suit. It's also becoming a big hit itself with a lot of buzz and positive feedback. I have a feeling they might catch lightening in a bottle a third time with this new record. So far, so good. I am liking a lot of the new records from both bigger and smaller bands that have been coming out this year.

Compared to the previous decades, the 2010's are a dark and depressing decade for pop culture. That's due to the PC/SJW culture that we have nowadays. Today we have BLM protests, ISIS, threats of going to recession, chaotic political climate, etc. Every time a new song/album comes out, it provokes more anger than excitement because, most songs have little to no inspiration and are not funny. 6 months later, I would expect to find a newly released trap rap/pop album in a bargain bin at a thrift store. Most of the movies have the same old bland themes, sometimes depressing. No wonder why there's been a very few G-rated movies released in the 2010's (none were released in 2016). Video games are mostly FPSes that are infested with DLC, season passes and microtransactions . Some parts of social media and comment sections in some sites are outright cancerous. I'm sick and tired of having to see crazily dressed people with ridiculous tattoos and bottle cap sized piercings.

I think it's because of the alt-right culture and the conservatives who hate progressive views and political correctness. They add fuel to the fire.

People have been complaining about political correctness since the 80s. It's sad that I had to learn what that word meant when I was only 5 or 6 years old. In the 2020s I can see then complaining about how PC everything is and how calm and open the 2010s were. Seems to be a cycle.

It didn't become big, this talk, and complaint, of PC, until like 1990? 1993?

According to Wiki, the term with its modern definition was coined in 1987, and the term was popularized in 1990 after a New York Times article about it.

Looking back at this thread from 2016 reminded me why I remember it as like 2020 without the pandemic, but similar for the protests and violence. It was also an election year so it was another peak of tension between two opposing views on so many issues. 2016 was like a darker version of 2000, much like how 2020 was a darker/dystopian version of 2004.

Interesting. Would you say 2000 was another version of 1984, and 2004 another version of 1988?

Yes and yes, especially politically with the presidential elections, but also the culture was similar. Also 2008 with Obama was to the Millennials as 1992 with Bill Clinton was to Gen X (young voters with a high turnout with the majority voting for them).

Even though 2016 was 5 years ago, it doesn't feel dated at all. It's weird because before all the years that were 5 years ago felt at least slightly dated (though less and less as the years went on). For 2016, it doesn't feel dated one bit.

I've thought the same thing! The only stuff from 2016 that feels dated is the super melodic pop music, but even by 2016 trap was blowing up and lots of pop was becoming more rhythmic. If you look at meme culture from this year (Leafy, Harambe, vaporwave) it still feels like a futuristic dystopia despite being in the past
