As much as I hate 2016, I really think that it should be over already. The fact that I keep seeing so many crap on politics, it gets really annoying.

Pop culture wise, it's a snore fest. My personal life, however, it's been one of the best years since 2007.

Me. Seems like so many of our musical icons are dying left and right, this upcoming presidential election is already one of the biggest sh!tshows in American history, and the year is only barely half over.
2016 sucks.

For me it's bad personally, bad politically, and bad musically/pop culturally. Also bad in the direction society is headed in.

I think it's partly the election. I think we'll at least exhale around November, when we figure out who our next President is. America, that is.

Ugh, I absolutely can't stand 2016 as a year in itself. There have still been some good movies coming out, including the greatest film in the Disney Animated Canon (Zootopia), but the whole atmosphere is just so mean-spirited and cynical. There have been an overwhelming number of major celebrity deaths, the Target boycott is absolutely embarrassing, the shootings and police violence are sickeningly tragic, Trump has inspired millions of angry Americans to just complain about everything, and the SJW extremists are more controlling of my generation's popular culture than ever before. OitNB culture doesn't seem to be abandoning the lesbian community anytime soon, either. While 2016 has not been as terrible a year for music so far as 2015, it hasn't exactly revived music from its mid-2010s rut, either.
Thankfully, 2016 has been the best year of my personal life since at least 2011. It could still be so much better if I finally had a girlfriend for the first time, but at least now I feel real purpose as an individual, unlike the constant disappointment and self-deprecation I suffered through last year.

I hate it pop culturally, as I do with the core 2010s in general, but you guys probably already know that by now :P. Politics have gotten more chaotic and extremist. Both the SJWs and the Alt Right are dividing the nation in a way that has not been seen in a long, long time. When it comes to my personal life, while do I feel a sense of loneliness in this era, I have also gained a better sense of individualism during this year. Even if it means I have to be alone for a little a bit longer, I don't want to pretend to be something I'm not just to fit in.

My personal life hasn't been bad, same old same old. I don't like the current atmosphere and tension at an all time high, nor do I like all the extreme reactions to everything. On a positive note there are movies I look forward to when they come out.

I do. It's even worse than 2015. I would say it is the worse year so far for me since 2012. I'm hoping things will look better later but so far the year isn't very nice.

I honestly can't tell the difference stylistically. It's like 2016 is the worst of mid 2010s culture. I hope things will improve soon, but I doubt anything significant will happen until the early 2020s. I used to think that 2017-2019/2020 would be the era where things slowly improved. Now I'm not so sure. It's possible the late 2010s will be rock bottom for society/culture, and things won't improve until the early 2020s. As much as I want things to improve, it may be that things have to get worse before they get better.

I hope not. I can't see things getting worse than they are now. But honestly where I live, I think things will improve greatly. Our federal government is doing well so far and they will be passing some new good progressive legislations. Same as the provincial government where I live. The economy is slowly improving and the loonie is slowly but surely rising. I have a feeling things will improve very soon and 2016 is the absolute peak of darkness lol. If the violence/mass shootings and this Trump drama stops that will make things even better. As for music and pop culture, I really hope that improves at least a little in the late 10s.

I hate the entire mid-2010's period (from mid-2013 until now). 2016 is actually the best (or more like least sucky) year of this period. Usually the Olympic years are supposed to the good years, but lately even the "good" years are not so great. It could be because I'm getting older too. 2016 was supposed to be the new 2000, but it's nothing like it at all. It's more like 2001. Even in 2001, there was just one single horrific event on one particular day, while now its just one bad news after another. Within the last month there was the Orlando club massacre and then the Dallas police shootings. These are definitely some dark times. Pop culture wise, the movies, music, video games, and TV shows all suck compared to 2000.

2016... so far, has been the best year of my life.
Got a job
Have had so much more freedom.
Social Life is on an upward trajectory.
Personal Life has become so much better.
Depression of the last six months of last year disappeared.... optimism has returned.
Cincinnati has not really been too affected by the unrest this country has had, heck our BLM protest was entirely peaceful, and I mean literally nothing happened(No throwing rocks, concrete... no arrests.. etc.), which is exactly how those protests should be.
But I cannot look away from all of the unrest the rest of the country has had... this election is going to be the most divisive and polarizing in history... but the debates are going to be SO entertaining. :) But other than that... a world economy that is going to slip into recession soon... social unrest... ISIS.... SJWs... sigh somethigns make me hate this year but this year has been great for me.
And I dont know about Canada becoming a superpower... lol... the oil price crash in 2014-2016 has signficantly affected Canada.... even more so than America.

Which songs in particular do you think are well suited to the early 10s ear?
Music in 2016 feels like it's going back into the electronic direction, but in a sombre and mature style. 2013 and 2014 had their electronic songs too, but when I think of those years I think of poppy and upbeat songs such as All About That Bass, Happy, Shake It Off, Uptown Funk etc. that had a lot of sax in them.

Electronic music has always been around in the charts and never went away. It may sound slightly different than some songs from the early 10s, but overall they are very similar and electro pop never died.

That's the thing. The early '10s were electronic but more mature than 2013 and 2014. Songs like All About That Bass, Happy, Shake It Off, Uptown Funk, etc were what I hated about those years. I like the direction it is going. The radio is listenable again. As for songs with an early '10s feel, these ones come to mind. Any of these songs would have sounded right at home in 2011. These are just a few of them.

Music sounds just like in 2015, only much worse. At least in 2015 we had songs like Uptown Funk to save it. This year is super generic and really bad quality.

I hated Uptown Funk.
2016 so far has been the best year for music since 2012, in my opinion. It can't quite touch 2009-2011, but its headed in the right direction.
The best thing is teen pop and the disco revival are dead. In my opinion, those two genres are what killed music in 2013 and 2014.

This is similar to what I've been saying too. Since last year up to now, with all of these little attacks getting bigger and bigger, whether it's police brutally, shootings, or terrorist attacks from ISIS, are leading up to this really big attack on America or another country that could force us to go into a huge war or something. Not trying to call out what type of war it could be though, but there are definitely signs out there though.

I don't think the U.S. would ever try to revive the draft again. Nobody wanted it, and people were relieved that they didn't have to fight for their death (and country).

It would probably be a lot less controversial if more resources were invested in drones to do the fighting, anyway.

I think they would not implement the draft unless we had an extremely large war and conflict... they still have it as a back up.
Sort of sad the last completely sucessful war the US has seen was the Gulf War in 1991, other than that... one has to go back to WWII... though the Reagan did invade Grenada... and pretty much ended the Cold War.

Me too. We already have to deal with so many godawful things ever since this year started. I'm hoping it wouldn't be that bad at the end of the year, especially in November.

Of course, Donald Trump had to pick one of the most atrocious, prejudiced, and ignorant running mates in Mike Pence, aka the guy who signed the "religious freedom" bill in order to allow discrimination against LGBT people. His stances make Trump look like a leader of world peace. Hopefully, Hillary manages to keep her lead in the polls just so we don't have such a volatile leadership in the White House come January.

I don't think the disasters would last up to the mid 2020s. Things would've changed too much by then. Last thing I need is more dark and depressing eras. Apparently an upbeat/colorful/lively culture with a decent economy is too much to ask for these days.

I don't think mass shootings would come to mind whenever I think about the mid 2010s. For one, it happened since mid 2012, so I'm not surprised that it's not a early 2010s thing. I think the police brutality (despite being a huge problem since the late 80s, when N.W.A made "F*ck the Police") that's happening is a huge problem that most minorities and politicians face during this era.

You sure about that bud? We have lost tens of thousands of jobs since mid-2015, people across the country are becoming more and more cynical. The brain drain is starting up again. The government has gave up on our only foothold in the tech Industry (blackberry) and xenophobia is rearing it's ugly head. The only good thing that came out of this year was that the loonie was low. Because a loonie in the toilet means wonders for the domestic tourism industry.

Most the job losses were in Alberta, because of the oil prices. Unemployment rates in BC and the East, provinces that are less reliant on oil, have remained steady.
What brain drain are you talking about? Link?
Blackberry died ~2012/2013. I remember by then "get a job at Blackberry" was a frequent joke among my engineering and computer science friends. And in 2014 when we started our app club, talks about "having to develop a Blackberry version of the app" was an inside joke.
I'd dispute that claim of people being more cynical. In the summer of 2015, 50% of people believed the country was headed in the wrong direction. Today that's 37%. People who believe the country is headed in the right direction went up to 48% from 26%. (http://poll.forumresearch.com/m/post/2513/more-think-country-moving-in-the-right-direction-better-off-now/)
Trudeau's approval rating is 60% to his 32% disapproval almost one year into his reign. That's historically very high. (http://www.cbc.ca/news2/interactives/leadermeter/index.html)

Hm, I suppose you have a point. But also consider that the issues of 1929-1945 were different issues. Again times would've changed. Whether that means a better age or just a different disaster isn't something anyone really knows. And while history DOES repeat itself from time to time it doesn't mean that it would happen in the 2020s. I certainly don't have a crystal ball in front of me so I'm just gonna end it at the future is anyone's guess. Whatever happens is up to time itself. For all we know all this could blow over by 2017 (hypothetically speaking anyways).

The other day I just suddenly remembered that at the beginning of the year, the big issue was the transgendered bathroom rights, and then the gorilla incident happened which distracted people, and then the Orlando nightclub shootings happened which distracted people from the social issues, followed by the Dallas police shootings and the Paris truck attack. More recently, the big issue has been the floods in Baton Rouge (btw, that city has been on the news about 3 times this year), and how people are not upset about Obama being on vacation, while they were quick to call out GWB when he didn't respond immediately after Katrina. Then, there is the elections which is the worst choices I've seen. So that sums of 2016 so far. The Rio Olympics were kind of a let down too. I was expecting more dancing and samba music, but it was only a quick minute after the parade of flags.

I doubt many of the alarming trends of 2016(rising nationalist and authoritarianism globally, ect.) is just going to blow over when the clock strikes 2017. This has been a something in the making for the past 35-40 years, I think the sociopolitical situation in the US will get even more turbulent after the elections, especially if Hillary wins.
Angela Merkel is likely to get booted in the 2017 Germany elections, the refugee crisis and terrorism will polarize Europe even more.

This. All the way. Politics would just turn into a nationalistic viewpoint, thanks to social media and other sorts of communication. I fear that white supremacy (especially the alt-right) might rise up again, even though I'm not sure if it would happen drastically.

Dancehall is the musical fad of 2016. Cheap Thrills, One Dance, Cold Water, Work, etc. EDM is also much more popular in 2016 thanks to The Chainsmokers. The only song I tolerate in the top 10 charts now is Adele's "Send My Love". Overall, 2016 is one of the worst years of music of the 2010s only coming ahead of 2012. To be fair, he's one of the main reasons why America needs to be stopped with its corruption and polarization of politics. Why would anybody need to proud of a country like America, when it's not even progressive or promising towards their constitutional rights?

The writer of the Star Spangled Banner owned black slaves. Also, Colin Kaepernick was protesting a country that still has problems with black people, looking down on them. So by protesting against the song, he feels he's protesting against racism, and the shooting of black men/boys. Also, Kaepernick is half black.
Yes, I've heard the other side of the argument, but I can definitely see why Kaepernick is protesting.

Honestly, if I were Kaepernick, I would've worn a MLK shirt to protest against police brutality in America. He may not be one of my favorite activists (not because I self loathe being half black), but the Civil Rights Act of 1964 wouldn't be a law without him.

Castro does not oppress people by race, so it isn't hypocritical at all. The people complaining about him not standing should be happy because they are the same ones who chant their "America land of free" speech. And that's exactly what he was doing, practicing his freedom of choice by not standing. The people who are attacking him are the real hypocrites.

It's still in bad taste, though. He (Castro) still oppressed people. But it could be that Colin was using 'shock value' to get attention too.
