Subject: Muhammad Ali: Boxing legend in hospital with respiratory issue

Written By: Philip Eno on 06/03/16 at 4:26 am

Boxing great Muhammad Ali is being treated in a hospital for a respiratory issue, a spokesman for the former world heavyweight champion has confirmed. Ali, 74, is being treated by doctors as a precaution and is described as being in a "fair condition". A brief hospital stay is expected. Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1984, after quitting boxing. The three-time world champion was last hospitalised in January 2015 following a severe urinary tract infection. A family spokesman confirmed Ali's condition to the Associated Press but did not divulge which hospital was treating him or when he was admitted.

He's staying at a hospital in Phoenix.

And the papers have it wrong - he has not been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. In order to definitively diagnose symptoms as being Parkinson's disease, the brain needs to be sectioned post-mortem. There is no blood test, EEG, or similar that definitively determines a Parkinson's disease diagnosis. The correct term for his condition is Parkinson's Syndrome or Parkinsonism. Upon his death it may well be confirmed as Parkinson's Disease, but it is far more likely that he will be definitively diagnosed as having "Dementia pugilistica", also known as "pugilistic Parkinsonism".
