Nintendo just announced that it plans to discontinue the Wii U by the end of 2016. The Wii U was originally released on November 18, 2012, a year in advance of its two competitors, yet has struggled to bolster impressive sales figures, due to poor promotion, underpowered hardware, lackluster third-party support, mediocre Internet interactivity, and a general lack of significant titles, including no flagship entries in the Zelda or Metroid franchises.

With this announcement, it seems that the Wii U's fate as Nintendo's Sega Saturn is complete. Presumably, more announcements regarding the Nintendo NX will be made soon; hopefully it will not turn out to be Nintendo's DreamCast, aka the innovative system released significantly ahead of its competition that turns out to be too little too late and puts an end to the company's involvement in the console market.

This is very sad :( It's a decent console with some good games all things considered. It was always too expensive for me though.

I can't see any reason why anyone would buy an NX if the PS4/Xbox One will have well established libraries.

Wow, that's sad. But to be fair, Nintendo wasn't really that good with home consoles since the Wii U's release. The whole thing was unoriginal, barely had any good games, and it didn't even receive a lot of critical acclaim. Even though I was introduced to Nintendo's games around 2007/8, at least I experienced playing the Wii as a kid. The late 2000s/early 2010s were the last time people actually loved Nintendo, and didn't take them as a lame company. And now that we have Satoru Iwata dead, I don't think Nintendo isn't going to be as good as they were in the 80s and 90s again. Sure, we have the 3DS, but that's the only thing Nintendo is going to be taken seriously at right now.

If this is true even the Nintendo Gamecube would have been a lot more successful than this console. I can't believe Nintendo is actually in trouble right now, with all the tragedies that's occurred with the company over the last few years or so, including Satoru Iwata's death last year.

It was too expensive (among other problems). It's $300, more expensive than the original Wii, but has the specs of an Xbox 360 released in 2005.  If it were $130-$170 like the DS/3DS sold at, then I think it would have sold much better.

I mean for crying out loud, the freaking N64 is the ONLY Nintendo console I own and that's SAD!!! ;D ;D ;D  Gamecube looked like children's lunchbox and NOT a game console, the Wii was when they sold out and went causal, and with the Wii U they pulled a SEGA Saturn! Yep! The things that messed up the Saturn are the same things that is messing up the Wii U. In North America the Saturn came in 1995 and discontinued in 1998. You could blink your eyes and the Saturn would disappear while the N64 and PS1 were going on for 8+ years. Hopefully they don't make the same mistakes with the NX.

Oh goody. I was worried for Nintendo 2016 games like Paper Mario Color Splash, Star Fox Zero, and Zelda Wii U as those are being released between 2016-2017 (although I think Zelda Wii U may be cross platform between the WiiU and NX like how Twilight Princess was on the NGC and Wii).

Understandable opinion. From a business standpoint is a product is failing then there is no reason to leave it on the market. Dropping the Wii U and just moving to the NX isn't a bad idea. I just hope they don't make the same mistakes with the NX.

The Saturn is the obvious comparison, for all the reasons you mentioned, plus the fact that they were both heavily hyped consoles being released in the shadow of an incredibly successful predecessor (the Genesis for Sega, and the Wii for Nintendo).

The question is, if the Wii U does indeed wind up being discontinued at the end of this year, will it ultimately have the same impact on Nintendo as the Saturn did on Sega? I think it's possible. I was lucky enough not to own a Saturn back in the day, but I had several friends who did, and they were all mad as hell when Sega discontinued the console after just three years, and without ever releasing a true Sonic the Hedgehog game for it. Many of them refused to even consider buying a Dreamcast on principle, even after it got fairly rave reviews in the Fall of 1999 after it's launch.

I frankly feel the same way about the Wii U right now. I'm angry that the console might be dropped after just four years, and very likely with only one major Mario game, and absolutely no Zelda or Metroid titles, to it's name. It would be very tempting to get an "NX" if the new open-world Zelda game winds up being as good as it looks, but, at the same time, it would also be hard to give Nintendo another $200-$300 of my money after feeling like I've been screwed over with the Wii U.

Off-topic, but I'm curious on how much longer we'll have consoles. Microsoft is apparently trying to kill off the Xbox one (according to youtube videos, news, articles etc) to focus on PC. If Nintendo's next console doesn't do as well then Nintendo may drop out of the console business. Sony is the only one who had a consistent record of great success with consoles, but I'm not sure if they will stay with making consoles as well. This is all just me rambling, but I'm curious to see if we'll even have a 10th console gen.

I never had the Sega Saturn. So when the Dreamcast came out I wasn't upset as I really loved the Dreamcast (too bad it only lasted from 1999-2001). But due to the issues with the Saturn it's easy to see why no one wanted to get the Dreamcast. If Sega didn't make supid mistakes the Dreamcast would've lasted longer and Sega still be making consoles. A lot of people are either mixed out the Wii U or just don't care about it. So it makes me wonder on how they'll react to the release of the Nintendo NX. The Wii U's major Mario Game is just a console version of Mario 3D Land which I found to be disappoint as it wasn't like the previous major Mario games (Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy 1&2). Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze wasn't much of a step up from Country Returns on the Wii. No F-Zero. No main Animal Crossing game. Zelda isn't out (for all we know Nintendo is delaying it for the NX). No Metroid. And the later games like Paper Mario color Splash has everyone in disappointment. So if the Wii U was to get discontinued this year I'm not sure if anyone would want to spend another $300+ on a new console. I know I certainly wouldn't (I might not even get any consoles in the 9th gen as I may just stick to PC) as I'm already upset with the Wii U and is a bit paranoid that the same thing will happen for the NX as Nintendo is a bit stubborn when it comes to changing their ways.

Yeah, with that information. I now believe that the Wii U is the HD version of the Gamecube. I know it's your opinion, but I also feel like the Wii and Gamecube is done better than their younger counterpart.

This has always been Nintendo's problem. Nintendo was usually behind the competition as Microsoft and Sony always had the latest advancements (for example it took Nintendo up to 2012 to get HD while it Microsoft and Sony got it in 2005-2006). New Super Mario Bros U is just an HD rehash of New super Mario Bros. Mario 3D World is nothing more than Mario 3D Land, but for Wii U. New Yoshi's Island is literally just a 2.5D rehash of Yoshi's island. New Super Mario Bros 2 is just New super Mario bros 1, but with golden coins falling out the sky. Mario Tennis Ultra Smash is just one huge disappointment all around. Mario Kart 8 doesn't do anything new or interesting (it's gravity mechanic is purely just a visual thing as it doesn't effect the gameplay) Heck to me Nintendo has been rehashing Mario ever since Mario 3. As of 2016 we still see the Beat Bower/Save Peach Story (if you can call it a story), the same generic Grass, Water, Desert, Lava, Sky, Forest stage tropes, and the fact that the stages still don't even have names (they're still called World 1-1 or 4-3). Hyrule Warriors is a glorified Dynasty Warriors mod (Dynasty Warriors with the Zelda name slapped on to it). Super Mario Maker is alright to me. Star Fox Zero is just a Re-Imagined Star Fox 64 (it has the same levels, characters, and story). Paper Mario Color Splash to me is just Paper Mario Sticker Star mixed with Splatoon.

The HD remakes were pointless. Windwaker HD was made to improve upon the visuals of the original game. Here is the problem. Windwaker has Cel-shaded visuals which to many people allows it to stand the test of time and look good even to this day. So what was the point of even bothering to upgrade its look? Twilight princess HD doesn't look like much of an improvement in terms of visuals to me.

A lot of the things Nintendo did was just revivals as you've stated. Bringing things back again and again. It's great for people with nostalgia, but I personally don't like experiencing the same ideas again and again as it's tiring to me. Introducing older classics to newer generations isn't a bad idea, but don't we already have the Virtual Console for that? People always state that Nintendo is great at making new things and evolving their franchises, but as of 2016 I have a hard time seeing that with the Wii U.

Yeah, I used to visit a forum where Nintendo games are really popular, and they were all appalled when I talked about how poorly the Wii U had been performing, not to mention they all seemed to completely praise Super Mario 3D World as if it was the next Super Mario 64.

New Super Mario Bros U is just an HD rehash of New super Mario Bros. Mario 3D World is nothing more than Mario 3D Land, but for Wii U. New Yoshi's Island is literally just a 2.5D rehash of Yoshi's island. New Super Mario Bros 2 is just New super Mario bros 1, but with golden coins falling out the sky. Mario Tennis Ultra Smash is just one huge disappointment all around. Mario Kart 8 doesn't do anything new or interesting (it's gravity mechanic is purely just a visual thing as it doesn't effect the gameplay) Heck to me Nintendo has been rehashing Mario ever since Mario 3. As of 2016 we still see the Beat Bower/Save Peach Story (if you can call it a story), the same generic Grass, Water, Desert, Lava, Sky, Forest stage tropes, and the fact that the stages still don't even have names (they're still called World 1-1 or 4-3). Hyrule Warriors is a glorified Dynasty Warriors mod (Dynasty Warriors with the Zelda name slapped on to it). Super Mario Maker is alright to me. Star Fox Zero is just a Re-Imagined Star Fox 64 (it has the same levels, characters, and story). Paper Mario Color Splash to me is just Paper Mario Sticker Star mixed with Splatoon.

Super Mario Sunshine, while gimmicky, still effectively built upon Super Mario 64's foundation by experimenting with new possibilities using the same basic setup.

I think the company's downward spiral particularly began with the original New Super Mario Bros. on the DS. Back when it came out in 2006, it was a breath of fresh air to a lot of people, as it was the Mario franchise's first classic sidescroller since 1995. Turns out, it became an astronomical success, selling over 30 million  cartridges, making it the best-selling game on the DS, smoking even the handheld's port of Super Mario 64. This, I believe, gave Nintendo the strong impression that its old school titles were more successful than its more progressive ones. This trend continued on the Wii, where New Super Mario Bros. Wii did nearly just as well as its predecessor and sold more than double as much as Super Mario Galaxy did. Maybe back in the late 2000s, the back to basics philosophy was a good idea, but ever since the casual market drifted away from Nintendo and more towards iPhone and Android apps, there's been far less of a reason for people to purchase all of these rehashed titles, especially since they've barely progressed since this trend began. New Super Mario Bros. U, for example, is pretty much no different at all from the original 2006 NSMB aside from the addition of Yoshi (who was botched up, anyway), as well as new power-up suits that will probably never be used again in any form.

The HD remakes were pointless. Windwaker HD was made to improve upon the visuals of the original game. Here is the problem. Windwaker has Cel-shaded visuals which to many people allows it to stand the test of time and look good even to this day. So what was the point of even bothering to upgrade its look? Twilight princess HD doesn't look like much of an improvement in terms of visuals to me.

Yeah, Wind Waker has a completely timeless look. It's hard to believe that game is chronologically equidistant from the late 1980s, the peak of the NES, as it is from present day. I was also incredibly underwhelmed by the visual updates to Twilight Princess; its graphics still look below-average for Wii standards; at the very least, it looks worse than Skyward Sword!

A lot of the things Nintendo did was just revivals as you've stated. Bringing things back again and again. It's great for people with nostalgia, but I personally don't like experiencing the same ideas again and again as it's tiring to me. Introducing older classics to newer generations isn't a bad idea, but don't we already have the Virtual Console for that? People always state that Nintendo is great at making new things and evolving their franchises, but as of 2016 I have a hard time seeing that with the Wii U.

That's an excellent point. The funny thing is, even the Virtual Console was completely half-assed during the Wii U era. Nintendo should have introduced more games for the Nintendo 64 (they didn't even start to feature N64 titles until 2015) and maybe even Sega Saturn, but instead, they pretty much downgraded the service compared to its Wii counterpart.

The thing that struck me about Wii U's software was its sheer rehashing and lack of innovation. The vast bulk of video games were either revivals or sequels of old titles, like New Super Mario Bros. U, Super Mario 3D World, and New Yoshi's Island; gimmicky side-releases like Hyrule Warriors and Super Mario Maker (though to be fair, the latter game briefly made me seriously consider getting the console), or HD remakes of games released just last decade, namely Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD. From a business standpoint, this makes reasonable sense, just for the sake of introducing older classics to newer generations, but it certainly doesn't appeal to a very broad audience and gives little reason for old Nintendo fans to go out and buy the system. It's sad to see Nintendo so desperately cling back to what it once was in decades past, rather than adapting to the future and expanding its imaginative horizons.


I think Nintendo just got too complacent following the success of the Wii. After the disaster that was the Gamecube, many video game pundits had Nintendo dead in the water, then all of sudden the Wii is released and they pull off a huge upset over the PS3 and 360 in the 7th gen. Nintendo got cocky after the Wii and thought that they were "back" as the lead dog in the console wars. They obviously believed that they could just follow a similar formula with the Wii U and the customers who bought Wii's would just migrate over, when anybody with even basic knowledge of the video game market knew that wasn't the case. The demographics that really fueled the explosion of the Wii (largely older retirees and middle-aged soccer moms) are generally not the type of people who upgrade consoles every five years.

Nintendo's last truly successful era would be the SNES days. Since the N64 days there was the decline. N64 not only sold less than the PS1, but it also sold less than the SNES. The GC sold even less than the N64 along with being beaten by the PS2 AND the Xbox (which was the newcomer at the time). The Wii is just a fluke as most people see it. And the Wii U is selling following the same trend as the N64 and GC. It's selling less than the PS4 and XB1. And it's also selling less than its predecessors (N64, GC, and Wii). In terms of success history is repeating for Nintendo.

There were some innovative games on the Wii U. I really liked Nintendo Land. I was really hyped for The Wonderful 101, which is more or less a Nintendo franchise now. It was supposed to be a launch game but it was delayed to a bit later, great game. There's also Bayonetta 2 which is this generation's beat 'em up-to-get. Not a coincidence that my favourite 6th gen game is Devil May Cry and favourite 7th gen game is Bayonetta, so I do really like that genre. Super Mario Maker, now that's a great game.

I can see why someone would want new IPs; it creates the appearance of having a fresh new game, but in my experience a new IP doesn't necessarily mean innovative gameplay, which is mostly what I'm looking for. That's why I enjoy games like Super Mario 3D Land.

The 3rd-4th gen was their golden age. It seemed as if Nintendo could do no wrong as they were literally a powerhouse and on top of the gaming industry. The fact that they helped bring gaming back into the spotlight after the gaming crash of the early '80s is amazing to me. The NES and SNES eras are very amazing as it's interesting to see how Nintendo handles things in their earlier console years while being the best in the industry in terms of success. Super Mario 3D World was very underwhelming to me (no offense to anyone that likes 3D World). I don't see it as the next Super Mario 64 and Galaxy. There was a moment where I visited a gaming forum and I spoke about how the Wii U was a disappointment (this was back in 2014) as it wasn't selling well and there was gaming droughts. I ended up getting a lot of hate for that.  :(

As long as they add new features and refinement then I don't see it as a rehash. Improving upon what they created while also adding new things is a thing that I consider to be great. Mario 3 is basically an improved Mario 1. Mario 3 is Mario 1, but with new characters, levels, music, powerups, a graphical upgrade along with refinements. And it's seen as a pretty legendary game. So reusing old ideas and improving them is fine. The rehashes that I were referring to were the New Super Mario Bros games as they didn't really do anything special. New Super Mario Bros DS was cool as it was a side scrolling Mario game. Something that the public didn't have since Mario World on the SNES. New Super Mario Bros 2 is just like the original DS game, but with gold everywhere....and that's it. Nothing truly new or special. New Super Mario Bros Wii was great as it was the first to all 4 players. It sold like hot cakes and was a great way modern 2.5D platformer. New Super Mario Bros U literally introduce anything unique or special to me.

I agree with saying that they have a problem when it comes t making bold new ideas, though. Stagnating is something I've seen within the their games. And it's how I describe a lot of the Wii U titles.

Pretty much sums up my views on the HD Zelda remakes. I remember not liking Windwaker at first due to the visuals. But overtime I've grown to love it. As for Twilight Princess even before it's HD remake people were complaining about the visuals. Calling the textures and models outdated or bad as time progressed. What's really upsetting me is how we still don't have a Wii U Zelda yet. Some are worried that Nintendo is delaying the next game so it can be released as a launch title for the NX.

Yep! The Virtual Console for the Wii U was handled horribly. I remember when Nintendo said that the Virutal console was gonna have Gamecube games back in 2012. It took them up too 2015 to start actually releasing the games. Same for the N64 as you've stated. The Wii had tons of virtual consoles games within a few years of its release. There is really no excuse for why the Virtual Console is worse than it was on the Wii. On the Wii everyone loved Virutal consoles as it allowed us to play tons of old games. I was REALLY excited to see Super Mario RPG, Super Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, and Donkey Kong Country games on there.

I haven't played 3D World. 3D Land however I bought day one, and I bought my accompanying red 3DS on the same day. I was instantly hooked.

3D Land was fun. A bit basic compared to the past 3D Mario games like Galaxy, Sunshine and 64. But still a good game. In fact I remember being addicted to the game during my first few weeks of owning it.

For a home console 3D World wasn't as groundbreaking as Galaxy. I though Nintendo was going to give us something like Super Mario 64, but give it a bigger scale than what Galaxy (Super Mario Universe or something like that). Shigeru Miyamoto (Mario's Creator as some of you may or may not know) said that he wants to produce another fully 3D Mario game. So for the NX I can imagine a groundbreaking game coming along.

At least Nintendo still had originality when they were selling the N64, GC, and Wii.

The Gamecube era was a dark age for Mario platform games, despite it being the last Nintendo console that cared about true gamers. The DS and Wii was a mini-golden age for Mario platform games, but since around 2010-present it seems like all of the Mario games have just been updated versions of New Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario Galaxy. I agree that Nintendo has had a bad history with 3rd party games, unlike Sony or Microsoft who's done well with that since it appeals to more of an older audience and the consoles have usually had better graphics for those type of games too.

Pffft HA! I was so annoyed how most of Mario Kart 8's roster was full of recolored characters (Metal Mario, Pink Gold Peach, Dry Bowser, Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach), Koopalings, and baby versions of the main cast. I mean just look at this roster!

Over half of the roster consist of recolors, babies, and koopalings (and a lack of Bower Jr for some weird reason)! In all the past gens (cept Wii) a Zelda game came out earlier in the gen (usually 2-3 years after a console released). And we'd also get 2-3 other new Zelda games as well. I was never the biggest fan of Skyward Sword, but it is crazy to think it took 5 years for the game to come out after the Wii launched. For the Wii U the console is on its last legs and the Wii U Zelda still isn't out. The only Zeldas we got were just HD remakes of gamecube Zelda games.

Pffft HA! I was so annoyed how most of Mario Kart 8's roster was full of recolored characters (Metal Mario, Pink Gold Peach, Dry Bowser, Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach), Koopalings, and baby versions of the main cast. I mean just look at this roster!

Over half of the roster consist of recolors, babies, and koopalings (and a lack of Bower Jr for some weird reason)! Why weren't there characters like Diddy Kong, Petey Piranha, or King Boo like there was in Mario Kart Double Dash? Also Super Mario RPG isn't on the virtual console?


Way too candy colored and kiddy for my eyes!  8-P

The classic Mario Kart games had a balanced roster of the main characters, a balanced amount of courses/modes, and not too many unnecessary (baby) characters.

This is one of the reasons why I haven't played one Mario game since 2010, in fact, I haven't played a Nintendo game since then either.

It wasn't a new release. Just a port of the gamecube version with no real upgrades. So I didn't mention it. But you can if you want.

Probably because you were terrible at it then. I was obsessed with racing genre games when I was 7-10. Every time I went into EB Games or Gamestop every time I asked for a game it had to be racing related. I still had other genres like platforms or fighting games but most of my video games throughout my peak childhood were racing. Rather it was Mario Kart, Hot Wheels, F-Zero, Need for Speed, Burnout, Forza Motorsport, or much more. When I was a kid, every time I went to someone's house and saw them with a game console, the first thing I'd always ask is "what racing games you got?"

I assume they will, but as of now they haven't as of yet. As of 2016-2017 they seem to just be focusing on the NX console. Maybe by 2018-2019 we'll see a new handheld.

Off-topic, but I'm curious on how much longer we'll have consoles. Microsoft is apparently trying to kill off the Xbox one (according to youtube videos, news, articles etc) to focus on PC. If Nintendo's next console doesn't do as well then Nintendo may drop out of the console business. Sony is the only one who had a consistent record of great success with consoles, but I'm not sure if they will stay with making consoles as well. This is all just me rambling, but I'm curious to see if we'll even have a 10th console gen.

I prefer Diddy Kong Racing and Crash Team Racing over Mario Kart 64, but even I can't deny Mario Kart 64's innovations that it gave to the racing genre and even other genres. Before Mario 64 I can't think of any other 4 player Split screen games. Heck the fact that the N64 was 4 players was revolutionary as the Ps1 and Saturn were still 2 players.

Whey'd make games for their Windows platforms instead of a console. Microsoft's Xbox division is pretty insignificant compared to everything else in Microsoft since the Xbox makes up a very tiny part of of the overall revenue that Microsoft makes (heck some say that they even lose money on the Xbox). So removing the Xbox wouldn't effect Microsoft negatively at all which is probably why they'd want to get rid of the Xbox.

I hadn't thought of that. I bought MK64 in 1999 so the N64 was already the greatest party console at that point with many games to choose from. If I had MK64 earlier I might have appreciated it more. I think that by the end of the year though, when Diddy Kong Racing came out, MK64 was already outdone.

I don't hate MK7. In fact I loved it when I got it. For about a month or so it was all I played. It wasn't my most loved Mario Kart game, but it certainly isn't the worst. To me the worst is Mario Kart Wii. Heck I'd prefer MK7 to MK64 despite how legendary MK64 may be.

Lies. Communism is a scourge on society!!

It's still shameful that you can't find anyone. The LGB part of the community is so concerned with other people's biphobia/transphobia that they haven't thought to solve it within. It's stuff like that that makes me want to take a more active role in LGBT activism. There's still so much bigotry to wade through, but I'd feel guilty if future generations had to live like we did. :(


I've had the Her lesbian dating app for a few months, and literally two of the latest icebreaker notifications I got from it were, firstly, what was it like to have my first kiss with another girl, and secondly, a celebration of piercings (an all-too-common trend in the lesbian community that I personally find really unattractive). 8-P

It just seems like the vast majority of the 1.5% of women who are lesbians aren't attracted to whatever I have to offer. Most of them so far have been interested in generally the exact same things: sports, going on "adventures," tattoos and piercings, Disney movies (which can be a plus, but I think I'd connect better with somebody who appreciated things like Shakespeare more), shows like Orange Is the New Black and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and dogs, dogs dogs. Occasionally video games, too. But there's certainly no readily available supply of theatrical, intellectual, easy-going, modestly feminine, confident dames out there who are lesbians, at least not to my experience. I know other people who really admire me for my tastes and talents, but they aren't other lesbians. It frustrates me that there are so few other women with whom I'm mutually compatible with, whereas even a socially awkward person who's relatively conformist can still easily find a date if he/she wishes.

How is Mario Kart Super Circuit ranked that high and Mario Kart DS and 64 are way down there? While Wii definitely wasn't my favorite one I would not call it the worst.

I guess we all have different opinions on Mario Kart games based off our experiences. Personally for me Mario Kart 64 or Mario Kart Double Dash are the best console MK games of all time based off how the hype was and the popularity at the time it was brand new and going on. While Mario Kart DS was the best handheld Mario Kart game of all time. It's up to you anybody to choose.


What I'm surprised by is the fact that Mario Kart Super Circuit is the highest rate Mario Kart game on Metacritic (as a 93/100) and Mario Kart 64 has an 83/100. How on earth that happened is beyond me. Mario Kart Wii is the lowest rated with an 82/100. Now scores aside I rank them that way mainly due to experience and not quality (except with Wii as I just don't like that game overall). I had tons of mixed moments with Mario Kart Wii. I didn't like having 12 racers as it usually ended up with me getting hit by too many things as once. The rubberbanding AI annoyed me as I got hit by blue shells more often than I did in other games. It was the game to introduce the awful battle mode. I didn't like the way the driving handled. And I didn't care for most of the tracks. Mario Kart DS is low due to not having as much fun with it due to only playing single player. For Super Circuit I was able to play 4 players with my family and we had tons of fun. For DS I was the only to own a DS console which ended up with me playing single player which is where Mario Kart tends to get boring in. I'd do online racing, but I didn't have internet access at the time. Mario Kart DS was basically the right game for the wrong person (person being me). Had everything that I'd enjoy yet I wasn't able to use those enjoyable things (mainly multiplayer). And Mario Kart 64 is low mainly due to me not really going back to play as much as I do some of the other games.

Now this is all from experience and I do admit that I change my mind on what game that I like and don't like from time to time. If I started to replay Mario Kart 64 I may end up loving it and again and place it higher. Although Double Dash always stays as number one to me. If you think Mario Kart 64 is still an excellent game than that's fine. I can understand why you'd place it higher on the ranks as it's a great game. My ranking is mainly based on my own personal experiences which usually differs from everyone else's experiences.

Double Dash is forever the best console Mario Kart to me. And being complicated is how I roll. Also people don't like Super Circuit?!  :o That's news to me. Mario Kart 7 isn't a bad game at all.  Whenever I played online I usually ended up in 1st - 4th place as most of the people online are easy to beat. To train yourself just do a bunch of the ghost races. You'll find some pretty good ways to get ahead of your opponents through those.

Hey, don't feel bad guys. I'm 23 and a half, and I've still never had a girlfriend in my life, in spite of my desperate need for one, and I'm pessimistic that it'll happen anytime soon based on how poorly I fit in with today's lesbian community.

I'm sort of in the same boat. 22 and never even been on a single date. I live in the Silicon Valley, which is a nice place with generally nice people, but I feel like there is a very strong herd mentality (especially with people of our generation) that has made it difficult for me to really connect with others. I've made some good friends over here, but it really hasn't been easy. Despite that, I don't mind waiting a little longer, if it means that I'll find a girl that I have a genuine connection with. I'm sure you'll find that special girl in your life. It may take some time but it'll happen. The way I see it, it's better to be single than in a relationship with someone you really don't connect with.

A lot of people on the internet think Mario Kart Super Circuit was the worst Mario Kart game of all time, and I already knew that before I started getting on blogs or forums long time ago. Because it was just an updated version of Super Mario Kart with barely any new added features on it. I'm surprised you were able to play up to 4 players on Super Circuit. Most people couldn't afford that from what I remember. On Mario Kart DS the local multiplayer went up to 8 players. Mario Kart DS was the first Mario Kart game to have Wi-Fi. It was the first to have retro courses along with the main courses already there which made the game have 32 courses instead of 16. The courses were amazing and imaginative, a lot more creative than Super Circuit by a landslide. Mario Kart DS is considered one of the best single player Mario Kart experiences of all time. The mission mode was epic, and the options they give you on Grand Prix, vs, and battle mode were really good. Also, before MKDS came out, all of the previous MK games only let you do battle mode if you had 2 or more players, now with DS you can do battle with CPU's. Mario Kart DS was the last Mario Kart game with a good balanced roster of characters, and what do I mean by this, well, not too many unnecessary babies or koopalings, still your 8 original Mario Kart characters you start out with, while Daisy, Dry Bones, Waluigi, and R.O.B. are unlockable. Mario Kart DS was also the last MK game to have the Boo item, no other MK game has had it ever since. Things like this is why I don't understand how MK64, MKDD, or MKDS could be ranked behind Super Circuit, 7, or 8. It just makes me scratch my head. Sure, 7 or 8 may have the features that the DS or even the Wii already had, but I give the DS version credit for starting the trends, like the new retro courses or mission mode for example. While the snaking technique was a love or hate thing on the DS, it was a great skill that you could practice on time trials or Grand Prix/VS mode all the time so it could help your skills on wi-fi. I agree that Mario Kart Wii is when the battle mode started going downhill. I think DS had the last good battle mode experience, I even liked the DS battle course too, just like how Double Dash had the Gamecube battle course. Mario Kart DS definitely outclasses Super Circuit on all levels of originality and creativity. DS brought out a lot of new features, while Super Circuit was just an updated Super Mario Kart with no heart put into the game. 

As for my opinion on Mario Kart 64, it may not have aged well over the last several years, but were people saying this before Double Dash or 8 came out? Kinda doubt it. Mario Kart 64 to this very day still gets talked about by older teens and young adults almost everyday, because of how legendary it was. I'll be in one of my college classes and we'll have a video game conversation, and when it comes to Mario Kart, 64 or Double Dash immediately comes to the minds of everybody. Nobody thought about Super Mario Kart, Super Circuit, Wii, 7, 8, or even DS either.  Even when I was in middle school and high school when video game conversations were brought up it was always 64 or Double Dash, that still hasn't changed. We all remember being in the living room with our family or friends having a great time trash talking and setting up tournaments on the Nintendo 64 or Gamecube. "Hey remember how frustrating Toad's Turnpike was man always getting hit by those damn buses" or "I always fell off Rainbow Road dude that was so sick" or "Baby Park was fun as hell bro!" Getting frustrated all the time on Mario Kart was the most fun part about it so you could be motivated to get better. A Kart racing game that's too easy and not as challenging with boring courses just isn't fun at all. These opinions might change once the current generation of kids grow up though.

We talked about who revolutionized hip hop a few days ago. Mario Kart 64 will always be the game that revolutionized the Mario Kart franchise no matter how much more upgrades get added to Mario Kart 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, etc. It changed the multi-player experience for the racing genre of gaming forever. At the time the 64 graphics were the best in the late 90's/early 2000's, those courses in 64 looked like heaven. It didn't matter how the controls were or how difficult the game was at first, it's about how epic the courses were, the obstacles, the items, and always getting frustrated whenever losing, so you can be motivated to get better. I liked the power-slide boost technique too. I can agree with Crash Team Racing being better than Mario Kart 64, but not Diddy Kong Racing though, since it's courses and items felt boring to me. #Infinity's opinions on Mario Kart 64 pretty much lineup with mine.

I think Mario Kart 7 and 8 are good Mario Kart games in general, the graphics are great and the course designs are really good, however, I feel like since Mario Kart 7, heck maybe even Wii too, that the classic feel of Mario Kart has just disappeared, and I hope it's not nostalgia glasses, I'm completely find with underwater, but what's with all of the flying glider thing or the gravity stuff? That makes Mario Kart feel more like an arcade game than an actual console game. Again, I feel like the roster of characters get more unnecessary each Mario Kart game, like Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach, Baby Daisy, etc. Roy Koopa, Larry Koopa, Wendy Koopa, Toadette, Metal Mario, etc. Like seriously what's the point? I'm glad most of us agree that Mario Kart Double Dash is up there though.

This! I swear to god, that quote is true. This decade is just trying to be better, but it's not. It's basically repeating most of the same political crap that the 90s and 2000s had, only it had more shootings and terrorist attacks than both decades. It's like having a family relative that's trying to act cool, but he/she fails at it. It doesn't even have an original personality. It's basically the 21st century 90s.

Yeah, I agree, overall it was leaning towards the late 2000s than the early 2010s. When I look at pictures from that year people are still wearing giant jeans, giant hoodies, giant shirts that go down to their knees and wearing filthy running shoes so there's still a lot of 2000s in there. I'd say the 2008 portion was 70% late 2000s and 30% early 2010s and the 2009 portion was 50/50. In Canada the school year was from September 2, 2008 to June 24, 2009, so mathematically it was 58.2033% late 2000s, and 41.7966% early 2010s.

Your definition of "epic" is pretty sad. In the real 00s they set the bar real low. In the early 00s, My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy made real Pop Punk and Emo that sounded straight outta 1998. I have no idea how Nintendo could be well with the NX. The Wii U isn't doing that good, compared to any Nintendo console ever made. So, I don't know what the NX is going to do with the company. Especially when it's not going to have any special sh*t, now that Satoru Iwata is dead.

Releasing the NX in 2016/2017 would be a big mistake for Nintendo, it would make the NX looked liked they got a rushed launch, I agree with you that Nintendo should wait until 2018/2019 for the NX to be released, so Nintendo could do things better with the NX.

IMO the great 3 nu-metal bands are Korn, SOAD, and Linkin Park

Depends. The Wii U could be the Saturn. People used to say that the Wii U was like the Gamecube, but the Wii U is selling at a lesser rate than that. NX could be the Dreamcast if it ends up only being on store shelves for a short period of time until Nintendo removes it and drops out of the console business. Wii U is nowhere near the same level as the Wii. And if people are still sour about the Wii U when the NX releases or if Nintendo doesn't improve with the NX then Nintendo may not survive.

If the NX releases in 2017 I'm not sure how successful it'd be. I also have no idea what the pricing would be. In fact Nintendo being very quite about the NX is frustrating a lot of people as well

- Underpowered compared to the competition
- Backlash from the Saturn effects Dreamcast sales
- Lack of Game dev support results in less big games coming out for the Dreamcast

- Released very early
- May have strong hardware at first, but may be underpowered compared to the competition when they release

In a way, it feels like Nintendo is making the NX to compete with PS4/Xbox One, in the same way they created the Wii U to compete with Xbox 360/PS3. What they should really be doing is making the NX to compete with PS5. They can't do that if they have no idea what the PS5 will be like, since it's probably at the very early stages of development.

Just being post-2003 isn't enough for me to dislike something and you do realize I actually like some stuff post-2003? I don't like a lot but I mostly just play it up for laughs. What will happen is that once the NX is released next year, some people will buy it, expecting to be a great system and then a year later, the PS5 and the Xbox Two are announced with better specs than the NX, then the NX sales starts to fail and not too many games for the NX are released that same year and finally, just before the Xbox Two and the PS5 are relased in 2019, Nintendo calls it quits and goes to become a 3rd-party developer for the Xbox Two, the PS5 and possibly the new console that is not made by the current big three.

I think mobile games are already sealed as Nintendo's future, considering the gargantuan success of Miitomo in Japan. It will be a lot easier for the company to find an audience and produce profits by sticking to the mobile format instead of the $300 console with $50/60 cookie cutter games approach.

I wasn't trolling, but in the event that Nintendo decides to go 3rd-party, I was thinking they should sell the Nintendo 3DS to Microsoft, since Microsoft never had a handheld gaming device, but the Nintendo 3DS would have to be renamed as the Xbox 3DS.

There were rumours that Microsoft was going to enter the handhelds market when the PSP vs. DS system wars were raging on. But they must've either abandoned it or it must've been a bogus rumour because they came out with Viva Piñata DS and Zoo Tycoon DS. I think there were rumours of a Halo DS as well.

I really didn't pay any attention to the 2011 E3, since I'm not that interested into games. As for the availability for most of the part, I didn't care. It was simply one of the lamest consoles that Nintendo has ever developed. Hell, even the Virtual Boy was more interesting, aside from the dangerous side effects it has when playing the games. As for my overall experiences, I only played the Wii U about once in my school, and that's it.

Here's another one of my biggest problems with Nintendo lately, and some has always been one of my problems with them. Most of their games have always been good, but it's their lack of variety that's been a problem. After a while, it's the same generic, kid cartoony games that you've played so many times before. Here's your typical Mario platform game, Kart game, Smash Bros, Zelda, Kirby, Metroid, etc. or whatever, and after a while it gets so repetitive. not the mention games that haven't been released for the consoles in years like Star Fox or F-Zero. Understand the formula? All these E rated for everyone games, but it mostly appeals to the younger demographic who's not been introduced to Nintendo their whole lives. There's also so many pointless educational games for little kids that were released for the Wii, and continued to be made for the Wii U as well. As you get older you want more variety in your gaming with other genres. Which is why the XBOX and Playstation companies have continued to stay successful which appeals to an older demographic, whether you like their genres of games or not. There was a time when Nintendo used to appeal to a much wider audience though. I hate to say it, but without Mario's existence I would have never gotten into Nintendo games in the first place. This is something that I could relate with. I never really got into Nintendo until I had that Pokemon VHS tape from 1999 or 2000. I watched in the 2005-2006 school year, if anybody's wondering. However, I never really got to play any Nintendo games until the summer of 2008, when I got the Wii. Throughout half of my childhood, I spend time playing browser games from the Internet. I never even knew Nintendo was a video game company until the same year I got my Wii. However, I wasn't really a big fan of Nintendo's games. In fact, I was more into their older consoles when I got my Wii as a kid. I still play the older consoles (from emulators) since I wasn't really into the Wii a lot. I just feel like Nintendo has just introduced me to video games, not get addicted to them. The only video games I've ever played outside of Nintendo nowadays is Grand Theft Auto and other games from my iPad. That's it. I never really got into games. Even as a kid, I would be more interested into watching Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Discovery Kids, HBO Family, PBS Kids, etc. I would say that those channels were more significant in my childhood than Nintendo.

Good points. Nintendo's franchises do get repetitive to the point where I get sick of them. I can tolerate Zelda since those come out less often, but I'd really prefer if franchises like Star Fox started coming back more often (Zero is just a 64 re-imagining and not a fully original game according to articles) and F-Zero hasn't had a new title since 2003 (the fact that it's been around 13 years since F-Zero GX is crazy  :o). And the lack of 3rd part support is also terrible. Now I'm fine with Nintendo's franchise as long as they make some that is really surprising. New Super Mario Bros U, Nintendo Land, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Mario Party 10, Super Mario 3D World aren't really that groundbreaking or unique. A kid may like Nintendo, but as they get older they may desire more games in terms of variety and games that aren't targeted just for kids. Which is why people by Playstations and Xboxes (I'm actually confused on how to spell the plural version of 'Xbox').  This console gen there has been some many big 3rd party games that don't end up on the Wii U like Witcher, Assasin's Creed, Overwatch, Kingdom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy 15, Grand Thefta Auto and many others.

What I find funny about Playstation is how often they change up their games. For the PS1 there was Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Ape Escape and tons of 3rd party games like Final Fantasy 7 and Metal Gear Solid. For the Ps2 there was Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, God of War, Dark Cloud and tons of 3rd party games like Kingdom Hearts or Devil May Cry. For the PS3 there was Infamous, Uncharted, Resistance, Little Big Planet, Last of Us and tons of 3rd party titles like Resident Evil 5 and Ni No Kuni. PS4 is the current consoles, but we've already seen some new games like Bloodborne and of course the PS4 is getting tons of 3rd party games as well. They'd offer new 1st party games along with new 3rd party games. I'm not much of a Playstation fanboy, but I do like how Sony handles their games. Now as mentioned before I'm fine with Nintendo making games for Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, or Pokemon. But the games have to be really good and interesting. Mario 64 was amazing. Same for Mario Kart Double Dash, Super Smash Bros Melee, Metroid Prime, Zelda Majora's Mask, Star Fox 64 and tons of other games from the NES, SNES, N64, NGC, and even Wii (everyone loves games like Mario Galaxy, Xenoblade, or New Super Mario Bros Wii)

Now I have nothing against Nintendo. Consoles like the N64 and GC are in my top 5 best consoles list. And while the Wii was somewhat upsetting to me I still enjoyed it to the end. But even I can't get over the disappoint things that's been going on with the Wii U.

Yeah, I remember that. They were supposed to appeal to the hardcore gamers like they did with the NES to NGC. But they mostly just did the same things as they did for the Wii. Soon as they showed the tablet controller I was confused. I usually prefer to game with a normal controller like the 3rd-6th gen Nintendo consoles had. Most people assume the whole reason Nintendo created a tablet was due to it being popular with people at the time. But in gaming tablets are mainly popular with the casual audience. Which means that Nintendo was still trying to capture the casual crowd instead of the hardcore crowd.

I can understand that reaction as it was similar to mine and lot of others. 8th gen has been disappointing. I ended up buying all the consoles for the 8th gen just due to still being crazy about video games at the time. But this may be the last gen I'd buy games from. The 9th has to improve in order for me to continue gaming on consoles.

My house has a Wii U and we only got 2 games so far since we owned them back in 2012. That's because the Wii U has no good games. I told my parents to sell it at one point, but I was unsuccessful.

If Nintendo decides to stop making consoles (both the Wii U and the 3DS), then Nintendo would have to sell the 3DS, actually more popular than the Wii U, to Microsoft, since Nintendo cannot make the 3DSes anymore once that happens. So this means that Microsoft has their own handheld, renamed as the Xbox 3DS.

The title/lyrics are a stab against Jesse Lacey of Brand New and the entire thing is in reference to Brand New's song "The Shower Scene". It's emotional but it's more like a "f*ck you" kinda thing rather than self-hatred.
