The title is somewhat misleading and misinformed.

It's been 16 years since the year 2000, not the millennium. Contrary to popular believe, since there was never a year 0, the second millennium actually started January 1, 2001. We've still got another year on that front.

But to think that it's been 16 years since Britney donned a red jumpsuit or NSYNC were turned into marionettes, or Survivor debuted, or I started high school...  :o Where has all this time gone?

Don't you mean the third millennium? The first millennium was from year 1 to 1000.

Year 0001 - 1000 = First Millennium
Year 1001 - 2000 = Second Millennium
Year 2001 - 3000 = Third Millennium

As mentioned above there is not year 0. 2000 is the 100th (when talking centuries) or the 1000th (when talking millennium) year and not the 0th or first year.

Anyways yes it has been quite some time since we first entered the 2000s. A time when the 2000s were considered "recent" or "modern day" is no longer a thing (at least for most of the decade anyways). Big events have come and gone.

People care about the digits in the year, not the existence or lack thereof of a single year over two millennia ago.  It may not be scientific, but it's still way easier to just call the year 2000 the beginning of the third millennium A.D.
