As long as you spare Instagram and Twitter, too, then I'll be content with whatever happens. :D

I'm sorry, but no. People have been waiting for this "social media collapse" for a few years now, but it's only gotten stronger. It's not going away.

Girls know guys by their twitter profiles, and guys know girls by their instagram pages.
Social media has bred a generation of people who are inexpressive in the real world, and express themselves with their thumbs. They define others' worth by the number of likes or retweets they get. They think they're friends with people cause they like all their pictures and get likes back.
It's disgusting how nowadays striking up a conversation in person is seen as creepy, but you have guys flying into girls DM's and ****ing relationships start up like that.
Granted were so far along in the evolution of social media itd be hard to make a radical change but theres definitely something that can be done. Maybe itd start with our generation teaching our kids REAL values so they dont have to place value on some intangible **** that only exists online, like teaching our kids that being friends with someone means that you actually enjoy each others company, care about each other and want each other to do the best you can and thats it not someone you just like their photos or tweets occasionally expecting them to do the same.

And yet the amount of users on Instagram, Snapchat, and other such social networks have only continued to increase in 2015. Such articles may be written, but they were written before too and nothing changed. Social networks are only getting stronger as time goes on. I may not like it, but that is the truth. People may complain about them more than they used to, but no one is actually dumping them. Just like how people who complain about Youtube haven't dumped Youtube.

I miss when Myspace was the social media go to. Even when Facebook got it's start. Now there are way too many. I have tried most of them and they just don't excite me. I am on Facebook. I mainly go on to keep in touch with a couple of my friends as I don't have a phone at the moment. I do have YouTube and I'm coming up on my 8th anniversary there. Its amazing how fast 10 years have gone by since it launched. I've never really participated there as far as posting videos haven't even commented much. But I did discover an awesome girl there who I wish I could know outside of the world wide web. She's willing to hang out with her fans and when I discovered her she lived one state over. Now she's on the other side of the country. But I haven't really considered it a social media site until recently. Before it was fun now all kinds of drama like all the rest of them. I do believe it will stick around as long as there is an internet. As for the rest of them, as long as people use them. Even sites like Tagged are still around and hardly anybody uses them.

Realistically speaking, I don't think we can expect social media itself to die off. However, I do think the oversaturation of social media, as well as society's current obsession with it, will definitely die down.

People don't need Tumblr, Instagram, or Snapchat, or any of the social media sites causing the current oversaturation. Facebook and Twitter are debatable. Facebook helps keep in touch with relatives and friends that are far away, and both Twitter and Facebook can help promote businesses.

Anecdotal evidence is trumped by actual statistics. Statistics show that Twitter continues to grow each financial quarter in its user base. The growth is indeed, slowing, but it is still growing. It might be near a saturation point where everyone who could have started a Twitter account has already done so, but it is still technically growing.

I never understood those messenger apps. A couple of times people I met on Facebook or some other social media app asked me to download KiK so that we could continue messaging each other, and I couldn't understand why we couldn't just text, instead of my having to download another app that would take up space on my phone :P

Twitter will still go on for quite a while until another big social media site all of the sudden gets big. Funny thing is, throughout late 2003-2006, Myspace, Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter all debuted. Let's exclude the video site Youtube and then you have your 3 main social media sites for commentating with friends, adding/following friends you know in real life, chatting with each other, and sharing pictures. Each of these 3 have all peaked at some points. Myspace peaked in the mid to late 2000's, Facebook peaked in the late 2000's to early 2010's, and now Twitter has currently been at its peak since late 2012 or early 2013. Facebook is still used by many people but it's declined a lot, while Myspace has been dead af for a long time now. The question is, what will be the next big social media site that'll break through after Twitter passes its peak? We'll just have to see in the future. Youtube is a site where you share videos with people you don't know personally or watch music videos, that's been updating itself for many years now. It's been popular since 2006 or 2007 on a consistent basis, unlike Myspace, Facebook, or Twitter which have peaked at different time periods.

I could see instagram surviving. Especially since selfies seem like their now part of everyday society and not just a silly gimmick (despite how narccissitc it could be). I do agree with Facebook and Twitter eventually dying, although I expect hashtags to be like the new .com despite Twitter itself dying

Facebook has been dying for quite some time now, even though it's still very active, but it's no where near its prime like it was from 2009-2012. Twitter is still the top social media site right now, but I could possibly see it declining before Instagram but not anytime soon. Instagram is just a site where a bunch of girls compete on which one's the hottest and finest... JK though ;D

Kids are definitely not the only one's who do selfies. I have seen TONS of young adults who go crazy with selfies as well. People up to as far as their early 30's do that on instagram. Especially some of the models, super stars, or body builders.

How is social media going to collapse during the late 2010s? Isn't it always gonna be around for the next few decades or so, if somebody actually makes something better than what we have now?

Many years ago (before the advent of phones with cameras) I went to the Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago. Amongst other celebrities, porn star Seka was there signing autographs.
Too bad I did not have a camera back then. A selfie with Seka would be cool to have at my desk at work.

People are definitely gonna look back and make fun of people from today and the Selfie concept 10-15 years from now. The whole selfie thing is gonna suffer huge backlash and the word "selfie" will make people cringe.

Or they'll cringe with that said media. I wouldn't really feel happy with people being nostalgic over a decade, full of addictive technology and annoying trends. I know that I'm nostalgic over a decade that's easily defined with terrorism and war (the 2000s), but at least it didn't have freaks using touchscreen devices as their phones or portable computers.

I agree, except I think it'll be more like 5-10 years. I can't imagine the mid 2010s having that much longevity.

There won't be a 2010s revival in the 2030s, without a huge 2010s backlash in 2020s. Or perhaps people will just deem the 2010s as unworthy of reviving, and it will be seen as the decade that time forgot. Another possibility, is that if the late 2010s turn out to be good (or at least memorable), people will act like it represents the entire decade. Kind of like how people act like grunge represented the entirety of the 90s.
