Ice Cube is in talks to play Scrooge in a contemporary retelling of Charles Dickens' classic novel A Christmas Carol, reports Deadline.

In Humbug, Cube will play a wealthy property developer who is shown a path to redemption by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future.

Universal secured the rights to the script after a reported million dollar bidding war with MGM, New Line and Disney.

Tim Story, who worked with Ice Cube on the box office hit Barbershop, is set to direct the festive film - with a mooted release for Christmas 2017.

The rap star is riding high in Hollywood after the recent success of Straight Outta Compton, which he produced.
