Subject: Disney 'to make Mary Poppins sequel'
Written By: Philip Eno on 09/15/15 at 10:45 am
Disney is making a sequel to its 1964 classic Mary Poppins.
According to Entertainment Weekly (EW), the live-action film will be based on PL Travers' series of books about the no-nonsense but magical nanny.
EW reports the film will be directed by Rob Marshall (Into the Woods, Chicago) and will see Mary return to the Banks family in London.
Anne Hathaway is already favourite to land the lead role, according to bookmakers William Hill.
The action will take place about 20 years after the original, which was set in Edwardian London. The new story will be set in the Depression era.
EW reports that Hairspray composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will write the songs for the new film.
The original film, starring Julie Andrews, was based mainly on the first volume of PL Travers' Poppins series.
The new film will take inspiration from all eight volumes written by Travers, including Mary Poppins Comes Back, Mary Poppins in the Park and Mary Poppins in the Kitchen.

The casting of Anne Hathaway as Mary Poppins seems like no coincidence, considering her breakthrough role was Princess Mia in The Princess Diaries, also produced by Disney and in which Julie Andrews played the queen. It's pretty interesting how the story of one Disney movie is now repeating itself as reality for another Disney film.

Just as well they are widening the storyline (taking in all the books). The film has to be significantly different to the 1960's film or it will be doomed to fail. Mary Poppins is an absolute classic (just like Sound of Music).
You just don't mess with perfection...
I'll go and see the remake ... but, I'm already expecting less. I can't see anyone being as good as JA and even casting Bert will be difficult.
I hope I'm pleasantly surprised! :-\\

Firstly, it will not a remake, it is a sequel continuing the story 20 years on.
And secondly, Anne Hathaway wiil be perfect having previously won an Oscar for acting (and singing) in "Les Miserables".

Personally, I think they should have made a remake. Might as well since they are remaking everything nowadays. My idea was for it to be set in present day New York City. Anne Hathaway would be great for the role. Imagine Mary Popping floating around Times Square and the Statue of Liberty. Central Park is where they can jump into the painting, and Burt is a typical street performer that you see a lot of in NYC.

I'm aware of that, but they can make a modern remake to be set in New York.

What has the movie industry come to.... :-[
Yeah, but it's official, 2016, and possibly the next couple years for movies depending on how things go, aren't looking to be as good as 2012, 2013, and 2014 were for movies. Too many sequels or reboots of old franchises, and while I love the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC comics, I'm starting to agree that the superhero movies are becoming more and more oversaturated in the industry. Granted, this year so far has been really good, and still better than the mid 2000's to 2011 for movies, but they need to calm down on the reboots.

I'm hoping 2017 would be better. Everything about this year towards movies is just overrated to the core.

I love Meryl but its been too many years. It should have been made way back then, not decades later.

I respectfully disagree. If there's one thing the mid-2010s excel at, it's movies, 2016 being no exception.
Just look at all the movies that came out this year, we still have the second half to get through https://www.rottentomatoes.com/top/bestofrt/?year=2016

But most of them are reboots or sequels. It doesn't seem that original, compared to 2014 and early-mid 2015.

That would be a cool Disney sequel. Probably my favorite Disney sequel for this decade, even though I don't like Disney that much since 2008.

It also has to be noted that author P.L.Travers hated her creation of Mary Poppins being made into a film.
