Subject: Netflix drops thousands of films in US
Written By: Philip Eno on 09/01/15 at 6:14 am
Thousands of movies will be removed from Netflix in the US after the streaming service decided not to renew a deal with distributor Epix.
Removed titles will include the Hunger Games and Transformers movies.
Netflix, which has more than 60 million subscribers worldwide, said it wanted to focus on exclusive content.

This could very well be the beginning of the end for Netflix. People now are far too used to subscribing to the site so they can conveniently watch all sorts of films and shows; this trend would gradually cause it to look more like a toll to watch certain shows rather than a service people would want to use for general purposes.

If they start losing market share, don't be surprised if they start streaming porn.

So, Netflix is now getting more boring than ever? What the hell is with their business decisions?

I completely, whole-heartedly agree. Netflix is getting a big head from their massive popularity, thinking they can do anything.

If they actually try to stream porn, then they should have like an 18+ section, so that minors wouldn't be weirded out by the sexual themes. And besides, this is coming from the same online-streaming service with a kids section. That's saying something.

Back even before there was an Internet, a buddy of mine (he was absolutely a hard-core porn consumer, porn was kept out in the open at his parent's house) and I used to joke that we were going to start our own porn cable channel. We called it PornNet and had even sketched up a logo.
I can't imagine how rich we would have become if we had actually gone and done that. :D

That would've been cool in the early 90s, especially if it was a premium cable channel.

"But hey, Foo, streaming services are the future. Who needs local storage? That's something for pirates. Wise consumers ignore the supercomputers with terabytes of storage on their desks and pay money in order to become dependent upon the licensing deals signed by third parties in the cloud. It's so much more convenient than actually owning a local copy, and making a backup every few weeks."
You have supercomputers in your pockets, never mind the machines on your desks that are more powerful than anything imagined even 30 years ago, but which can, for $100, contain enough local storage for a lifetime's worth of content, yet you still choose to purchase services masquerading as software. You made your beds, consumers. Now lie in them.

Honestly its stuff like this that reminds me that online storage is not 100% reliable.
Sure you could torrent stuff online and subscribe to various services, but once those serves go down or a company decides to drop a certain IP, then your access to that certain aspect of the media is GONE!
There's one thing I could say with certainty, that my collection of VHS tapes and DVDs will still work & operate correctly (provided I take care of these mediums) 10, 20, heck 30 years from now.
However, a service like Netflix might not even be here within 10 years from now

So you're saying that Netflix wouldn't last long despite having a huge amount of people using their service?

The good news is at least you still got Netflix for TV series that you have desire to watch if you want to catch up on seasons. I understand the movies was a huge part of Netflix and that going away will very well hurt the company, however, as long as we still have series like the Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, or reruns of other TV shows or cartoons series on Netflix then we're find. It's only the lack of movies that will hurt Netflix in the long run.

The problem I have with Netflix and series is they may have one or two seasons, but then....
This has happened to us twice. We were getting the old Dark Shadows series on DVD through Netflix. After a while, they didn't have the rest of them. I found them on a torrent and downloaded them. Then we started watching the old Maverick series on DVD through Netflix. They had the first season but not the other ones. I bought the second season (because my husband wanted it).

So you're saying that Netflix wouldn't last long despite having a huge amount of people using their service?
Its just a 'what if' scenario. There will always be someone who will try to improve better than their predecessor. We saw this with the transition from myspace to facebook and currently with facebook to twitter. Heck it wouldn't even surprise me if YouTube one day became 'uncool' and a new video streaming service to take over. So its not that far fetched of an idea of the possibility of one of the most popular movie streaming services, being Netflix, to eventually go under or change their business course on what they offer to their customers
