Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel lead the race for this year's Oscars with nine nominations each.
The Imitation Game, Boyhood and American Sniper also have multiple nominations.
There was good news for British actors as Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne, Rosamund Pike, Felicity Jones and Keira Knightley are all nominated.
Up against Cumberbatch and Redmayne for best actor are Steve Carell, Bradley Cooper and Michael Keaton.
Cumberbatch, who plays codebreaker Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, said he was "knocked for six" by the nomination.
"So excited and honoured to receive this recognition," he said.
"It's wonderful to be included by the Academy in this exceptional year of performances. To ring my parents, who are both actors, and tell them that their only son has been nominated for an Oscar is one of the proudest moments of my life."

Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs says she wants to see more diversity in Oscar nominations, responding to a row about this year's nominees.

President Obama is hosting a special screening of the Oscar-nominated film Selma at the White House.
The film depicts the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama led by Dr Martin Luther King Jr.
It is a contender for best picture at next month's Academy Awards, alongside seven other films including Birdman, Boyhood and Grand Budapest Hotel.
Cast and crew, including director Ava DuVernay, are expected to attend the screening on Friday.
The film picked up just two nominations for the Oscars, the second being a nomination for best original song, Glory, by John Legend and Common.
But British actor David Oyelowo missed out on a best actor citation, for his depiction of Martin Luther King, and Ava DuVernay failed to make the cut for best director.
Had she been nominated, DuVernay would have become the first African-American woman to be nominated in that category.
The Oscar nominations have come under fire from some commentators for their lack of diversity, after it was revealed that all 20 contenders for the acting categories were white.
However, the Academy's first African-American woman president, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, told New York magazine's Vulture blog that the organisation does not have a diversity problem "at all".

I love the hypocrisy of the politically-correct "diversity mob".
You do not hear them decrying the lack of "diversity" in the NBA or most positions in the NFL where the racial makeup is grossly disproportionate to the general population. And for good reason... Those players got there because they were the best. So be it for the Oscars too.

The film I had list in my mind for best 'soundtrack' turns out that "Inside Llewyn Davis" was from last year 2014.
My best actor was to be Philip Seymour Hoffman in "The Most Wanted Man", the Academy never choose that, and that I have not seen any of the film film in the Best Actor category, I will skip one this.
As mentioned above my best picture was "Boyhood", and I sticking with it for best director too!
My best actress goes to Rosamund Pike in "Gone Girl", the only film I have seen in that category.

Awesome
It's the live performance of Everything is Awesome, another nominee for best song. The stage is rocking with technicolour mechanics holding mini Lego Oscars. Last time we saw a Lego Oscar was the day the film was snubbed, after missing out on an Oscar nomination for best animated movie.

A $150,000 custom-made Calvin Klein Collection by Francisco Costa dress, worn by actress Lupita Nyong'o at the Oscars, has been stolen in Hollywood.
The dress, studded with 6,000 natural white pearls, was taken from the London Hotel in West Hollywood when Nyong'o was out of the room.
The Kenyan won best supporting actress last year for Twelve Years a Slave and was a presenter at Sunday's ceremony.
People magazine named her the most beautiful person of 2014.
A dress "resembling" the $150,000 (£97,000) outfit worn by actress Lupita Nyong'o at this year's Oscars that was stolen this week has been recovered, Los Angeles police have said.
It was found in a bathroom of the same Hollywood hotel where it was taken.
Police were tipped off by gossip site TMZ, who said they were contacted by a man claiming to be the thief.
He said he had returned the dress after learning the pearls studding the dress were fake.
The custom Calvin Klein-designed gown is coated with 6,000 natural pearls, but the purported thief said he took two of them for testing and were told they were not real.
Detectives are working with the owners of the dress to confirm if it is the dress.
But Michael White of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said he believed it was. No arrests have been made.
''Whether the jewels on the dress are fake or real... we still have a burglary and we still have a grand theft,'' Mr White said.
Nyong'o won best supporting actress in 2014 for 12 Years a Slave and was a presenter at Sunday's ceremony.
Speaking about the dress's design, the 31-year-old said: "We talked about it being fluid and liquid. I wanted it to be an homage to the sea."

Sean Penn has said he has "absolutely no apologies" to make over his controversial green card Oscars quip.
Before announcing the best picture winner at last month's Academy Awards, the actor joked: "Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?"
Penn was referring to Birdman's Mexican director, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.
Inarritu, a long-time friend of the actor who directed him in 21 Grams, said he found it "hilarious". But some pundits were less impressed.
Entertainment Weekly's Nina Terrero tweeted she would never see a Penn film again, saying she was "shocked, angry upset" at his "disgusting" comment.
