No real breakout stars in the past couple years (Closest thing would be Lorde) just lots of minor names. I bet you most people wouldn't recognize the names Sam Smith or Aloe Blacc. There also isn't really any "in sound" aside from the generic EDM stuff that's been popular globally for decades. Dubstep is dead, scene is dead, the 80s revival is dead. Rap is still around but at the same time not this huge force that it used to be and aside from Odd Future I can't think of anything that's truly different in that field.

The only thing that really seems somewhat "in" now is post-rock and that's been going on for a long time too.

I notice a lot of people being into deep house, but that's how it is in Amsterdam.

The EDM stuff that's been popular over the past 5 years is like a mix of R&B/house/trance/dubstep styled pop, I think that's what's most distinct about it but it has reached oversaturation point in late '14. The newest most "in sound" of 2014 seems to be EDM infused trap, like Turn Down For What, Darkhouse, ect. The '80s revival does seem to be about dead right now, it went on longer than the actual 1980s.

Right now it's pretty much all EDM-influced pop or boy bands, with a little hip-hop still sprinkled in.  The '10s definitely have an "in" sound, there just is nothing really exciting or envelope-pushing in 2014.  It seems like everything this decade, such as dubstep for instance, has been very short-lived.  I really compare the current musical era to the mid-to-late '80s.  That period had a pretty uniform sound and everything pretty much played it safe. 

... and the Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Iggy Azalia stuff.  Basically, noting for me!  Though, I don't mind Lorde's stuff. She isn't trying to out do the other girls in classless acts.

I saw her play live at a small venue. Didn't get to meet her, but was so close to her I was practically under her skirt (sorry I know that sounds a little pervy  ;D ) and I tweeted her and got a reply back after the show! She seems really nice and genuine, it's a shame none of her songs ever became bona fide hits aside from the one with Gotye.

True ... it's a shame about her lack of main stream hits.  Cameo Lover was a great song and quite commercial by her standards.

No ringtone was only big twice in oncme 2005/early 2006 and I think mid 2007/ early 2008. Ringtoe Rap wasn't big at all or wasn't even popular  in the mainstream from 2003-mid 2005 when both 50 Cent and Kanye were both very popular.
