Are you serious? They should know the difference as they have at least done all of them, especially the 2000s when they were in middle and high school. I have friends your age and they definitely know the difference of all these dances.

Twerking is a word combination of "twitch" and "jerk". Twerking you're just jiggling your butt without moving any other part of your body. Booty popping you're using your back, chest, and thighs and "popping" your butt out with force.

I think they have forgot as twerking had been happening since 2011/12 and some songs of today have that twerking function and not the hip shaking of the 90s or the booty shaking of the 00s. One thing though, is that they were in middle school in the 2000s. So not only they have seen it, they did do the booty shaking as well because there are dances in middle school and it was popular until 2011. As a result, your friends did do it during middle and high school dances, but may have forgot because of the twerking sensation.

Twerking was a thing in '11 and '12 too though, it's getting overdone though. Grinding I remember and that's worse than twerking. Kids did that at, of all places, church camp dances. Even one school teacher of ours said about school dances it's like they were trying to "have sex with their clothes on."  >:(

Sorry to subject you to this but I just couldn't help it.  Every time someone mentions twerking, I think of this song.  I never got into this type of music, but it's definitely some hilarious nostalgia from my High School days (school dances, MTV and whatnot)

I don't think twerking is stupid.  Every genre of music has their own type of dancing.  If that's your thing, fine by me. I personally don't participate in it.
