Haven't you lived through the 90s? I was also quite young then, but I knew that it were the 90s at least by 93/94.

1991 and 1992 was blurry, but 1993 to 1999 was crystal clear! Don't remember anything from 1990 though.

Well we know that the music in every new decade is always bland and disinteresting compared to the previous decade.
How about "The Boring Twenties" ? ???

Yeah, if you're talking about really living through a decade with a proper name, then it would be the 2020s for me aswell. I don't remember the point when the 80s ended and the 90s started for example. I don't even think that I knew that we were in the 90s until like 1992.

When did the concept of decades as cultural/historical reference points begin? I know as early as the 1920s, the 1890s were already being nostalgically referred to as the "Gay Nineties" (note the term predates homosexual connotations). In fact there were 1890s themed radio shows and cafes in the 1930s.
Idk if this is really related but it reminded me of something. I remember watching Rosemary's Baby (1968) and one of the main characters said something about "back in the '90s" which sounded weird because he was obviously talking about the 1890s. It got me wondering...if someone said "the '90s" in 1968 would people have been more likely to assume you were talking about the 1890s or the future 1990s?

There is no consensus to what the 2000s decade and 2010s decade is called, at least in the English language.

The 19th century, or the 1800s? I read it somewhere on a thread when I was still lurking, and not a member of inthe00s yet! It was on a thread on this site.

I just call the 2000s "the two thousands" and the 2010s "the twenty tens". In the future ai'll probably call the '10s "the teens".

I think people rather talk about decades that have passed. When I talk about the 20s today, I still always mean the 1920s. I don't think this will change even into the 2020s. It's too deeply in the people's minds. However I predict that by the late 2010s maybe some people will refer room the next decade, but they will call it 2020s and not just 20s.

Yup, can't wait until the '20s. I wonder what its nickname will be or if it will get a nickname. I also wonder since it is the first with a proper name, if this will somehow make it more likely to have an identity like the decades in the 20th century? I doubt it though because when I was talking about the turn of the decade my brother in law said he only just noticed it will be another decade... In 1989 I'm pretty sure everyone knew people were going into another decade. But now because recent decades lacked identities, the whole "decade" thing is no longer mainstream. :( Most people don't even know we are going into a new decade.
I've seen a couple TV programs talking about the best of the 2010s decade but maybe it's too early because it's not as much as it was in 2009.

That actually makes me sad that the 1920s are that old now. No matter what anyone says, "The Twenties" will always mean the 1920s in my heart!

Why does everyone say the 00s and 10s didn't have proper names?
2000s are the two-thousands. We use the term "21st century" to name the century rather than the decade.
2010s are the twenty-tens. Or tens for short.
Simple. Nothing confusing or weird about it.

the 2000s do have a proper name, but IMO it gets confusing in the 2010s because of 2010, 2011 and 2012.
"twenty seventeen" doesn't share a common name with "twenty eleven" like "two thousand seven" does with "two thousand one". It gets clearer after 2013.

Everyone knows twenty tens is the 2010s so just go by that.
