Pop duo Jedward had to be rescued by the coast guard after becoming stranded by the incoming tide, it has emerged.

The eccentric twins needed to be located by a helicopter after spending hours trapped in darkness near Malahide, Co Dublin.

The pair got into trouble after going for a stroll along the coast from Donabate.

Rescuers initially struggled to locate the brothers after they rang their mother to tell her they were  in difficulty on a sandbank.

But after eventually locating them, brave rescuers waded through six feet of water to get the pop twins to safety.

Speaking after the terrifying incident, the pair thanked the coast guard for preventing "a tragedy".

John told the Irish Sun: "What we want to get across is how quickly this all happened. This got out of hand before we even realised.

"This could have been a tragedy but for the good work of the coast guard.

Relieved mum Susanna, who raised the alarm, said the boys were becoming more desperate as the water rushed in. 

She said: "It was terrifying for the boys. They ended up on shifting sands completely surrounded by water.

"This could have been a terrible tragedy but for the coast guard finding them.

"The boys were getting more and more desperate as the water was coming in.

"Thank God the coast guard sent the helicopter up and found it them trapped on the sand near Malahide."
