Just like any pop cultural movement of the past, we get puzzled on what exactly this new thing is. I don't know what a selfie is nor have even seen it properly done. What are your opinions on it and how long do you think this will last?

A selfie is a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.

Probably the most recent famous seflie was taken at the 2014 Oscar Ceremony, featuring Ellen DeGeneres, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts.

I think people just want to see what they look like.  I can't think of any other reason why someone would take a picture of themselves?

The only good duckface is the 70s (technically 1967-present) duckface that came with the invention of Pringles.

The "selfie" can probably be traced back to Myspace, when people took pictures of themselves at various "myspace" angles and stuff for their profile pics.  It grew from there.  So yeah, social networking is to blame.  That said, I never thought of it as particular special or interesting until the word "selfie" suddenly came out of nowhere and made it seem like a hot new trend when it had been going on for years.

Actually 2013 was the year the term "selfie" got popular. I distinctly remember hearing it first in spring 2013. So it is definitely a mid 10s thing. The term selfie didn't exist in 2011 or 2012, and was added to the dictionary in 2014.

Personally, I heard it in summer 2013 when I was at a touristy spot and my friend became excited about taking "selfies", of which he took many that day. I mean, taking pictures of yourself always existed, but that was the first time I heard it being called that ;D

About when most people had smart phones that may have had front cameras too. Early versions had tiny mirrors on the back next to the only camera. I draw the line at selfie sticks. Those are cheesy.
