We are 7 days into the new year, that's not enough time yet to locate some favourite songs.  That being said though, one of my favourite singers of today has a new song out and it's rising up the Canadian chart.  Like all of her songs, I really like this one alot ...

Mia Martina featuring Dev - Danse
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHlq9wmNH3g

I can now also call this one from 2013, a favourite from 2014 as well because it has now entered the Top 40 in Canada and is on the rise ...

Martin Garrix - Animals
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCYcHz2k5x0

Martin Garrix is from Holland, just like last year's Top 40 favourite Armin Van Buuren ("This is What it Feels Like") and now with the great Tiesto entering the Canadian Chart at #74 with his new single, it seems we may see a Dutch dance music invasion, and I like it!

Tiesto - Red Lights

Now that 2014 is a quarter of the way over, I can say that the vibe so far is terrible. Whether I listen to the hip-hop or top 40 station, there seems to be no good songs and they keep playing the same crap over and over. There are only a few good songs worth mentioning:

- "Drunk in Love" by Beyonce
- "Dice Pineapples" by Rick Ross
- "Adore You" by Miley Cyrus (that's actually the first Miley song I like)

It could be because things aren't going well in my life this year, so maybe the music just sounds like crap, or it could be that this year is just crap all around.

I've enjoyed what radio has been playing this decade so far.....but this year is just.....dull.

But music in general is continuing to improve IMO.....especially Hip-Hop and R&B....both are going back to their roots and aren't concerned with catering to Pop radio.

I agree with the people on here saying that 2014 has been pretty dull so far for music.  I don't think it's been bad.  In fact, a lot of the stuff coming out right now isn't outright bad.  However, it just...I don't know, just doesn't really stick out to me.  Maybe it will get better, so far it's off to a duller start than the past few years were.

That said, I do agree with those who have said that the radio is better this decade than last decade.  Top 40 radio is genuinely listenable in the 2010s, at least for me.  And I say that as a 00s teen.  With the exception of rock music, almost every mainstream style of music has improved in the 2010s.

I think this year doesnt quite stick out because we're in that point where certain music trends are going away, some are coming in and theres no definitive sound in this point in time. 2008-early 2013 was littered with auto-tune, 808s, and EDM influences. That's going away, well, at least in top 40 world it is. There have been a lot of trends in music that have been coming and going, and nothing has stuck yet, i feel.

@ the discontent, the music industry died in the mid2000s.  THE major rock radio station where i live has completely stopped playing new songs in 2008, they were just trickling in before then; it has become a early 2000s and classic rock station.

"Stay with Me" is a song by English recording artist Sam Smith from his debut studio album In the Lonely Hour (2014). It was released in the United Kingdom as a digital download on 18 May 2014. "Stay with Me" is a gospel-inspired ballad that details the protagonist pleading with his one-night stand not to leave him. The song was written by Smith, James Napier, and William Phillips, with Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne also receiving co-writer credits due to the song's similarity to Petty's single "I Won't Back Down".

The song has become Smith's most successful single to date, peaking at number one in the UK Singles Chart (becoming his third chart-topper there, second as a solo artist), topping the charts in Canada and New Zealand, and reached number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It has also reached top 10 status in over twelve countries worldwide, becoming his most successful single to date. In February 2015, "Stay with Me" won the Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

That being said though, here's a trio of popular Canadian tracks that I quite enjoyed in 2014.  I am quite surprised these first two did not chart outside of Canada.  They both sound like the kind of music you would normally see in (at least) the UK Top 40  ...

"Uptown Funk" (stylised as UpTown Funk!) is a song recorded by English producer Mark Ronson, with guest vocals by American recording artist Bruno Mars, for Ronson's fourth studio album, Uptown Special (2015). Sony Music Entertainment released the song as the album's lead single on 10 November 2014. The song was written by Ronson, Jeff Bhasker, Mars and Philip Lawrence; with Ronson, Mars and Bhasker credited for producing it as well.

The single has been commercially successful, spending seven weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart, eight weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, and topped the charts in several other countries including Australia, Canada, Ireland, France and New Zealand. The single held the record of the all-time most streamed track in a single week in the United Kingdom, having been streamed 2.56 million times in a single week. In 2015 the song won Ronson the Brit Award for British Single of the Year.

It's such a step forward from the overproduced dance music that is made these days. I want this minimalist style to become popular.

Just out of curiosity, was this song ever popular in the US back in 2014? It's called "Cosby Sweater", by the Hilltop Hoods. They're an Australian hip-hop group, but the reason why I ask, is because the song was released around the same time as the Bill Cosby sexual assault allegations and also, sweaters are referred to as "jumpers" in Australia. As a result, I thought the song possibly might have made it onto the US Billboard charts as well, but I don't know for certain, which is why i'm asking if it even made it onto the Billboard charts or if it was ever popular. It was a massive hit down here and it peaked at #4 on our charts. It's still a crap song though. :P

"Thinking Out Loud" is a song by English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. It was written by Ed Sheeran and Amy Wadge and produced by Sheeran's frequent collaborator Jake Gosling. The song was released as an "instant grat" digital download to the iTunes Store on 18 June 2014, serving as a promotional single from Sheeran's second studio album x (2014).

The song entered the UK Singles Chart at number 26 upon release of the album and spent almost 20 weeks climbing the chart before finally peaked at number one in early November 2014, giving Sheeran his second UK number-one single.

In September 2015, it also became the seventh single to have achieved triple platinum in the UK during the 21st century. In October 2015, the song became the first to be streamed over 500 million times on Spotify, and is also one of the most streamed songs in the UK.

"Thinking Out Loud" received nominations for Grammy Award for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 58th Grammy Awards, winning the latter two.
On 10 August 2016, it was announced that Sheeran was getting sued by the family of Ed Townsend for copyright infringement, who claim that "Thinking Out Loud" plagiarises elements of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On". The claim was voluntarily withdrawn, with the court later saying there was no grounds or evidence of plagiarism even if the claim should have been submitted further in the courts.
