Subject: Naomi Watts' Diana film flops on opening week in US

Written By: Philip Eno on 11/05/13 at 12:03 am

The biopic of Princess Diana has failed to attract audiences on its opening weekend in the US.

Diana, which set out to document a detailed account of the Princess's colourful life, only managed to gross £40,000 at the box office,

The film, which stars 45-year-old British-Australian actress Naomi Watts as the princess, also failed to bring in either box office success or critical acclaim when it emerged in UK cinemas in September.

US audiences appeared to be equally disinterested, and though it only opened at 38 screens, it made just $64,914 (£40,800), which amounts to just $1,708 (£1,071) per location.

The film was the product of German director Oliver Hirschbiegel, who also directed Academy Award-nominated Downfall, the biographical story of Traudl Junge, the final secretary for Adolf Hitler.

Diana, however, was not met with such acclaim by UK critics, being brandished as 'car crash cinema', and attracting comments such as 'Wesley Snipes in a blonde wig would be more convincing' than Watts' performance.

Following the criticism, Hirschbiegel said he had been 'devastated' by the notices, adding 'but when you make a film you don't think about the reactions'.

'In all the other places where it's opened - in Poland, the Czech Republic, Turkey and Slovakia - it's been very strong,' he told the BBC.

'I think for the British, Diana is still a trauma they haven't come to terms with.'

The plot centres around Princess Diana's romance with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, Dodi Fayed whilst documented the moments leading up to tragic royal's car crash in 1997.

In the film, Watt stars opposite Lost actor Naveen Andrews, who played heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, with whom Diana had an affair.

Watts also acted alongside Cas Anvar, who plays partner Dodi Fayed, and the pair recreated the royal's famous yachting trip.

Back on September 13th 2013, Diana star Naomi Watts reportedly stormed out of Simon Mayo's BBC radio interview.

From The Mirrror:

"This is the moment Hollywood actress Naomi Watts walked out on an interview with BBC DJ Simon Mayo.

Simon, who has interviewed Hollywood heavyweights such as Richard Curtis, Anne Hathaway and Michael Douglas, played an unedited version of the chat today on his BBC Radio 5 live show, saying he was still baffled by the actress' sudden exit.

He explained Naomi, 44, was speaking to him from a hotel room in Claridge's with a BBC technician - who said it was the Diana actress who cut the interview short after just eight and half minutes.

The supposed 10 minute interview, for Kermode & Mayo’s Film Review, appears to begin well with Simon asking Naomi a series of questions about the film.

However blonde Naomi gets frostier as Simon continues to ask her probing questions about the blockbuster.

Simon asks if producers got permission to film in royal grounds and touches on the subject of the actress speaking to friends of Diana. Naomi seems to take offence at the way the questions were going and tells Simon she has to wrap it up."

Personally I think the public is a little burned out on Diana hype over the years.
