Subject: Lorde - Next Teen Sensation?

Over the past few weeks, New Zealand sensation Lorde has stormed the charts with its song Royals. The song is quite catchy with a cool, smooth vibe. 8)

Lorde is basically 16-year-old New Zealander Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O'Connor. Could she possibly be the next Britney or Avril? ???

When I first heard Lorde, I thought she was about 22/23 years old, so she sounds older than she really is. She reminds me of protest singers from the 60s more than Britney Spears. Lorde will turn 17 in only a week or two.
Teen sensation? Maybe, she reminds me of Jewel from the 90s, who had a bit of intellect in her music.

What a terrible song. The "Boom boom" base beat, wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too loud. Annoying! People can actually listen to that?? :-\\
If I hate it, it's bound to be popular :D

She's already had 5 hits in her native land, so in Australia/NZ, she already is a sensation.
Royals is a catchy song, but I don't know how it made it to #1 in both the US and Canada. There's better songs out there that should be #1. She's only 16, which is too young of an artist for me to listen to. It just is too creepy

It's ok, I'm not crazy about it.

It's possible to like her music without perving out on her.

Those of us who like this song... crave a different kind of buzz. :P
This song reminds me of an old soul classic with a similar theme... "Be Thankful (for What You Got)" by William DeVaughn. 8)
Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac
Gangster whitewalls
TV antlers in the back
You may not have a car at all
But remember brothers and sisters
You can still stand tall
Just be thankful for what you've got
Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac
Diamond in the back, sunroof top
Diggin' the scene
With the gasoline
Gangster whitewalls
TV antlers in the back
You may not have a car at all
But remember brothers and sisters
You can still stand tall
Just be thankful for what you've got

Because it's catchy and the lyrics are interesting, something other than what we've been hearing for the past 13 years.

No offense but labeling bands/perfomers like this as a sensation? ??? She and her band look like they maybe should be performing at a High School talent show at best, in my humble opinion 8)

"Be yourself" and "it's not about the money" are things we haven't heard before?

Is it just me or does she look a lot older than 16? I know 30 year olds who look more youthful than her.

She does look older than 16. When I first heard her and saw her music video, I thought she was 20-24. It was really weird to find out she is only 16.

Maybe they'll have a "Lorde: Countdown to 18" web site like they used to have for Miley Cyrus, or the Olsen Twins. :o

I was just in Chicago, and another song by Lorde, "Team" is now getting heavy airplay. Looks like this gal is gonna be a juggernaut. 8)

She just turned 17 like 9 or 10 days ago. So one more year 'til she's 18 for those men who fancy her! ;D

I'm actually converted!! :o I have had this song going through my head for the past couple of days. I really think Lorde has some talent. I'm not too certain how long she will be the 'next big thing' though.
Strangely, I had not actually heard the song until a young lady sang it at my daughters school Art's Night last week. The girl sang it so well that I asked about the song and found out it was the song that this thread has been discussing.
I'm thinking about buying my first CD of 'new' music since 1985.

Unfortunately, she isn't as musically relevant now as she was back in 2013 and even 2017 with her sophomore album Melodrama. The huge teen sensation now is obviously Billie Eilish, and even then she's part of the alt-pop circle that Lana Del Rey, Lorde, and others helped form.

She peaked really early. Eilish will probably be the same.

I never liked the song Royals. Sounds so weak, like it’s made for grocery stores or dentist offices. But I saw her on SNL and the other song she did was much better.
In any case I would have had no idea she was so young.
