Ben Affleck has been cast as Batman in a forthcoming Superman sequel, bringing together the two superheroes in one film for the first time.

The 41-year-old will star opposite British actor Henry Cavill, who will reprise his role as Superman from the most recent film, Man of Steel.

Director Zack Snyder revealed the big screen superhero mash-up at a comic convention in San Diego last month.

Production is expected to begin next year for release in the summer of 2015.

"We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics' most enduringly popular super heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill and then some," Warner Bros President Greg Silverman said in a statement.

Mr Snyder, who also directed Man of Steel, said in a statement that Mr Affleck will provide an "interesting counter-balance" to 31-year old Cavill's Clark Kent.

"(Affleck) has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne," said Snyder. "I can't wait to work with him."

The sequel - which has yet to be given a title - will reunite Man of Steel stars Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White) and Diane Lane (Martha Kent).

After Argo I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Ultimately it comes down to the script. If the script is good and the acting is up to par then I won't have an issue with it.

I remember what they said about Keaton...pretty much the same thing they are saying about my Ben. Up until Keaton played Batman he was a second string comic.  Best to just wait and see.

Thankfully, iconic "Batman" star Adam West - who donned the cape on TV and at the movies - has offered Affleck his guidance.

"Remember Ben, with the cape and cowl comes great responsibility (and lots of heat)," West tweeted Friday. "Bring deodorant."

What could Ben Affleck bring to the role that hasn't already been done before?

I think they need to do one of two things here: 1) Just give Batman a rest already. Put him on the shelf for 10-15 years like they did after the 60's TV show. Or: 2) Bring back the goofy grey-suited NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA Batman that we all knew and loved back in the day. After going through these posts I was happy to find out that I'm not the only one here who feels that way. Philip Eno even went so far as to suggest that Adam West should reprise the role, and while I too think that would be awesome, the man is well into his 80's now and he's just too old.

But you know who would be great as a new campy Batman, possibly even better than Adam West himself? Bruce freakin' Campbell. And Patton Oswalt should be cast as Robin. Thoughts?

THIS! I'll never forget this one group in a producing class I took in college pitching this idea for the next generation Batman film and I thought their story was absolutely genius! Made me wish I have thought of that on my own. In fact, I'm surprised Hollywood execs haven't thought of this yet.

In regards to Ben Affleck, I was not pleased when I first heard the news. I have now accepted it, but I still have the hardest time seeing Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman. I really like him as a director, but when it comes to acting, I'm not always 100% convinced. It truly comes down the script and depending on that, I guess Ben might surprise us all. Man of Steel was definitely a better movie than Superman Returns, but I felt the script could've been tighter, especially in the second half of the movie. I personally loved Christian Bale as Batman and he happens to be one of my favorite actors. The reason why Christian worked for me and I think the general public is that at the time that he was cast as Batman, he wasn't that well known like he is today. Batman Begins was really the vehicle that propelled him into stardom. I feel if I saw Ben Affleck on screen, I would see it as "Oh, Ben Affleck is playing Batman" than just Batman since he's already well-established as a name. My feelings on the casting news aside and just looking at this from a business perspective, this is actually a smart way that could lead him to getting some type of deal with Warner Brothers and directing the Justice League movie which is planned after Man of Steel 2.
