Wikipedia says twerking has been going on since the '90s...it's only recently caught on as a pop culture phenomenon.

Apparently it's a combination of "twist" and "jerk"; either that or the phrase "to work it" said quickly...

Wikipedia says twerking has been going on since the '90s...it's only recently caught on as a pop culture phenomenon.
It was more of a cultural-regional thing I think. I first heard of it in 2003 when I moved to Alabama.
Of course, I was also DJing at a black strip club at the time. 8)
