Subject: Is it just me, or does pop culture seem like a convoluted mess?

I think we're having a bit of an identity crisis.
Music-wise, there seems to be no dominant genre, just a little bit of dance-pop over here, teen pop over there, indie rock and soul elsewhere. Fashion-wise, we have colorful, flowy flower prints, black-and-white stripes, geometric/other crazy patterns, not to mention re-hashed retro trends from yesteryear.
I hereby dub this current era the "Bipolar Era."

Why does it have to be dominated by one thing or put in a box and labeled

It just seems so...all over place. It's as if we're going through an experimental phase or something. :P

4. Get Lucky - Daft Punk Featuring Pharrell Williams, retro disco
5. Cruise - Florida Georgia Line Featuring Nelly, country pop/rock with some rap ???
6. Come & Get It - Selena Gomez, dubstep-raga hybrid
7. I Love It - Icona Pop Featuring Charli XCX, electropop/EDM
8. Stay - Rihanna Featuring Mikky Ekko, piano ballad
9. Radioactive - Imagine Dragons, indie pop sound with what seems like dubstep influence
10. When I Was Your Man - Bruno Mars, another piano ballad
Yeah music seems all over the place in 2013 but EDM still seems to be the overall dominant sound(like it has been for the past 4 years).
At least there is more diversity, something people have been complaining about a lack of for quite a while.

The problem with hit songs in the past few months, is that while everything sounds different, they all share the same quality of being extremely boring and unremarkable. It could at least do us the favor of being easy to analyze.

I mean that there are so many different trends going on simultaneously that it feels like we're experimenting with things.

its a lil more of dance pop carrying over from the last few years and trying to fade out

Top 40 is as diverse now as its been since the '90s. It's a good thing that Top 40 isn't entirely one genre. I would say there is still an EDM lean but it isn't like it was in 2009.
