Subject: Is this what 2010's music will be like?
Written By: Slim95 on 06/01/13 at 12:38 am
Not sure if this is what music of the decade will sound like but I've heard this kind of style on the radio frequently so I'm not sure if it will get more popular and become the popular music of the 2010's. It has an old 90's vibe to it. Here are two popular songs that are examples.

I think the early 2010s will be remembered in future decades as the EDM era, as it's been the dominant sound of '09-'13.
I expect EDM to still be moderately popular for the remainder of the decade but some other trend will probably replace it as the dominant sound.
2013 to me seems to have a kind of identity crisis though, not sure what direction music is heading? ???

EDM is just getting popular. EDM is more underground/DJ stuff, while "electopop/dancepop/whateverpop" was the sound of around 2008-2012. The problem with EDM is that it is getting too popular with people like Rihanna doing bad EDM songs now. It's refreshing to hear actual dance music with instruments such as the two above songs.

You'll have to be more specific. What other songs would fit this mold?

Suit and Tie by Justin Timberlake fits this style and Thrift Shop by Macklemore sort of does but the hip hop version of it.

Ah, so sort of like Olly Murs, or Cee-loo Green's new album.
I guess I kind of know what you mean, pop music seems to be slower and there are more songs with real instruments and more natural (but still poppy) sounding drums than before...
But like Emman said, the top 40 has been really random recently. Like you've got Ariana Grande's sounding like Mariah Carey, Demi Lovato's Kelly Clarksony guitar-pop song, Selena's weird dubstep+indian tablas tune, multiple charting piano ballads, Justin Timberlake etc. Its hard to pick out trends right now.

Yeah that's true

Yeah that's true
it is because the dance pop of late 2008-late 2011 has been replaced with indie music (Fun,),R&b(Miguel, Frank ocean),regular pop(Just Timberlake, Carly Rey)
Justin timberlakes comeback earlier this year showed alot of people using simple instruments and not using auto tune is what we have been missing. The Dance
aspect of music has been regulated to edm acts only with only a few pop artists incorporating it in the charts. The dance pop sound of the last few years was
getting too tiresome so a refreshing change of pace is necessary. In fact Mariah Careys new song with Miguel has charted and is being played on the radio
the last time you heard a new Mariah song on the radio was probably 6 years ago.

Bruno Mars's "Treasure" definitly has a 70s/retro/disco sound to it. Fun song.

Daft Punk's new album is not that good, just inferior copies of the originals(in this case, disco, soft-rock, electro, and prog), so much hype in the media over them and they have become completely unoriginal and boring.
This retromania needs to stop, it is ruining music, I want music that feels vital to now, music that is forward looking and takrisks.

Are you just ignoring the fact that EDM has quietly become a massive force in music in the last two years or so? Also, I am sick of people saying how bad music is today. Pop music has always been bad, at least the majority of songs. If you look at the Billboard Top 10 in the late 80s/early 90s, there are some awful songs that no remembers.

She is late '00s-early '10s. She will be associated with the decade changeover years much like Britney Spears and N'Sync are associated with the '90s-00s changeover years.

This song is pretty good, his best yet, but it sounds more '80s to me, R&B circa '82.
Now this is what Daft Punk SHOULD be sounding like if they're going for a retro early '80s sound.

What direction do you think music is heading, 2013 is sort of random jumble of indie-folk, dubstep hybrids, electro-house, piano ballads, pure pop, and hipster rap. :o

To be honest I no longer care about music. It's overrated. I mean it's good, but music is not everything. I was not in music until 15 and I still cannot what the big deal is all about. It's like it's the most important thing, well, it's not. I'd rather go to the movies or watch TV (although they're getting worse, too) than having to sustain the noise in a crowded disco. And for the downfall of music we should blame the fans, and not the artists or the execs. They deliver what the majority of people want. Nowadays people care about artist's image and about stupid things like their personal lives instead of just listening to their music. Music stopped being cool when singers stopped being singers and either became activists, or started making publicity stunts in order to stay in the media. But, it's what the majority of fans want -- I bet most female teen One Direction fans don't care about their music per se, they find them attractive and dream about sleeping with them. ;)

That Ariana Grande song is totally an early '00s r&b throwback, it takes me back to 2002 or 2003 or something. It's not what I usually expect out of a disney nickelodeon type singer. I like it tbh, I always liked those r&b/rap jams back then.

Apparently it samples the same song as Thalia's 2003 hit "I Want You". In addition to Ariana sounding similar to Mariah the song is also a throwback to J. Lo and Ashanti songs from the early '00s.

Get lucky, Thrift shop, Suit & tie and Blurred lines sound to me like a 90s/early 00s throwback. Nice and slightly funky pop songs, with a natural undertone. I even could have played them at my semi 90s stream, if they were releaxed before 2004; they wouldn't sound out of place. :)
For the topic starter: If you like Blurred lines, search for tracks produced by The Neptunes, or released under the name 'N*e*r*d' (in the 1999-2003 era). The Neptunes tracks have been produced by the same people, and the (often a little bit rougher) N*e*r*d tracks for a huge part. Especially the Neptunes tracks sound exactly the same as Blurred lines. It was a hype, back then. :)

So, nothing new, but (in my opinion) A LOT nicer to listen to than electropop/autotune pop. I'm glad Pharrell & co are back.

We only can tell what 2010s music is like, after we have heard late 10s music. So we'll have to wait until 2020 at least. As early as 2003 I would have never been expected what 2009 music would be like.

To me 2013 seems like electro dance is on its way out, with the exception of a few songs like "Clarity" by Zedd (and even that one is a late 2012 holdover, as it originated in Europe and caught on the airwaves in the States later on. Icona Pop's "I Love It" is the same way.) Hip-hop and R&B seems to be coming back as well, with A$AP Rocky and Kendrick Lamar. There seems to be a lot of late 90's samples, such as Ciara's "Body Party" and Ariana Grande's "The Way". Overall though, my favorite album of the year is still Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience.

So far 2013 seems to be a big year for 70s revival and to some extent the 90s (keep in mind 70s nostalgia was huge in the 90s). Last year it was more about the 60s and 80s (with groups like Of Monsters and Men and Tegan and Sara respectively). I agree that EDM is the defining movement but I have a feeling that may change in the next year. Indie rock has also hit big in the past year or so.
