Subject: Does 2013 so far look as futuristic as you thought it would be?

Written By: Spiral13 on 01/06/13 at 1:30 pm

If you thought about this year 5, 10 or 15 years ago would you have imagined the world would be like it is today? Did you think it would look more futuristic than it actually is? Or is it more futuristic than you thought it would be?

Personally, my 2003 self would probably be surprised with the differences in the last 10 years, but could easily get used to it and feel quite at "home" in 2013.

Big technological changes occur in about 20 year.
1973-1983 - not so big, 1973-1993 - very big
1983-1993 - not so big, 1983-2003 - very big
1993-2003 - not so big, 1993-2013 - very big

Well yes in a way now more people are listening to music on iPods and blackberries so it's much different than when people listened to music via walkmans.

Well 15 years ago I imagined that 2013 would look more futuristic. It reminds me I always have this one memory of when I was in Jr. High school in the early 1990s. There was a reading class that I would take, and one day we had an assignment to write a short essay, along with some drawings about how we imagined the world would be like in the year 2010. Interesting right? We watched a program called "Space Cities" and they discussed that in the future in 2010 people would be living in other planets and cities in space. They even discussed what fashion was going to be like....I have yet to see all of the fashion and fads they predicted. I can't imagine how they even began to have those predictions about living on other planets to begin with. I was only 13 when I watched it so I believed every word of it.;D I remember being all excited for some reason, thinking I would live on some other planet happily ever after, lol. Looking back now, I ask myself why did they tell us those things? It's just sounds silly now and it is kind of a scary thought not living on earth ;D.

I'm still waiting for flying cars, and being able to take tasty food pills instead of having to eat a real meal.  :P

In my opinion, cooler things have happened than flying cars and hover boards in the last 10 years.  :P I mean it would be expensive and unnecessary to have a flying car realistically, it's not that it can't be made as airplanes exist, There's just no point. But being connected to the internet all over the world everywhere you go with your phone and get connected through social networking everywhere are some amazing and huge changes that occurred from 2003 to 2013. Music would sound very futuristic compared to 2003 where it was slow and mellow. I would of think we are in another century if I heard 2013 music in 2003 as I would think it sounds so fast and techno-like and full of autotune and effects that would seem like it would occur in 100 years.  ;D Having a black president is a big change too and fashion is different as well. Lot's of things changed since 2003 to me.

I actually think the difference between 1993 and 2003 is pretty enormous.

In technological/electronical aspects: YES! (Smartphones, Tablet PCs, flatscreen TVs etc.) ... I think these are the only things that makes 2013 futuristic... in other aspects: not really.

I think 2013 and beyond looks futuristic, everything you see these days, everybody has to use some sort of computer to do things.

Well you don't even think that tablet computers etc. are futuristic? I think they are already in comparison to even early 00s' stuff.

That's pretty much how I feel. I mean, sure I used to think the actual 2015 would be like Back to the Future Part II's version of 2015 back when I was like 10, but if you had told me in 1998 (or perhaps even in 2003 for that matter) that by 2013 I would be able to browse the web, watch TV shows, listen to music, and read 140 character messages from celebrities about what they're having for breakfast, and do all of that on a fairly affordable cell phone that didn't weight 20 pounds, I probably would have been pretty damn impressed.

Yeah... and carrying around a small flat display in your pocket that can play movies with a length of more than a VHS tape (it's actually a lot more...). Just out of the question in the late 90s. If anybody thinks that this is not futuristic, I don't know what still has to come  :o ;)

We came a long way as far as technology is concerned, I mean 30 years ago people had "brick" cell phones, Ataris and Sony Walkmans.

2003 to 2013 is pretty big, because we've had a proliferation of flat-panel monitors dominate the halls of many places imaginable to the point that the entire planet could be a huge Las Vegas Strip. What I DON'T like is the information overload, and that's a consequence about facing the future, knowing opportunity cost. Shows like Hoarders exploit this, and you just don't have time to enjoy everything that you want and having the top priority is key. And yes, the music does sound futuristic with its technological influence, along with the effects at the movies (even the people in scenes are done by computer, any movie that isn't in 3D is a b-movie), and the shorter attention spans reflect wanted to cram in as much as possible, given that time will keep marching on. Interest in space exploration continues to grow, with new discoveries abot billions of Earth-sized planets in the galaxy, interest in Mars continuing to grow, and private space tourism becoming a reality. Self-driving cars seem just as "futuristic" from a '90s standpoint as flying cars would, and the gadgets/equipment in cars rivals or even beats what's found in flying cars. It also allows the past to become "quaint and historic" from a later era, but we are still a long way to a Star Trek future.

I think it were more the Diskmans in that year, but I guess Walkmans were still popular - but definetly decreasing.
