Subject: Will high inflation or hyperinflation come to the US?

Written By: 80sfan on 09/30/12 at 4:01 am

If so, when do you think it will start? And what would cause it?

My guess is it would start very soon unfortunatley. Don't be surprised if by November this year. The cause? I would tell you what/who I believe the cause will be but I don't think it is wise or even safe to talk about them on here.

I'm predicting in about 3 years or less. By the way you could personal message me, but you don't have an account. Plus I'm not towards being a democrat or republican, so I'm a lot less likely to be biased than others.

Inflation is a function of money supply in addition to other factors.

The government continues to print more and more money, in disproportion to economic growth, to fund deficits and so if it continues unabated yes, we will see huge inflation.

I heard that we haven't seen inflation yet in America, because people aren't spending because of the recession, so not as much money is in circulation in the economy right now. Also, I heard that the banks aren't giving out loans to some people, because some people can't afford to pay it back (again, because of the recession). So that's another reason why not as much money is in circulation in the economy, and perhaps why we haven't seen inflation yet.

I'm not an economic expert so sorry if I said something nonsensical and/or talked about something in a wrong way.

Well it's not so much about democrats or reblicans. It's far more worse and serious than that. Let's just say that they have more than eight letters and start and end with the ninth letter of the English alphabet. I won't risk naming them on here.

The gravy's gonna hit the fan after the election.

I call for Lloyd Blankfine to go to asspounding prison for six months.  That might inspire his colleagues to return to a semblance of ethics.  Above all I might have to suspend my principle against the practice of lynching and lead lynch mobs to Wall Street where we leave bodies on gibbets and heads on pikes.

Capitalism sinking like the Titanic.  It would be immoral for us to let the criminals loot the place and retire to compounds in Morocco.  It's time to massacre every last man and woman working for Goldman Sachs.  I am calling for the push required to destroy world capitalism once and for all.  We're all going to suffer, so let's make the banksters suffer worse than we have to.

You who sing the praises of capitalims must be made to know capitalism is dead and the kings of the market are still singing the same tune they did when it was alive, but now there here to suck the offal from the dead.

Capitalism is over.  Stick a fork in it.  It's done.

Meanwhele, the oceans are choking to death on on polymers gone wild.  We might not have a habitable planet by 2050.  If we don't kill the banksters and the corporate greedheads, and the vile government lapdogs who make their orgy of kleptomania possible, the will steal all the resources of the world and make survival at any level a lost cause.  Do you want civilization to exist in fifty years?  Well, then we have to get out there and kill some capitalists and government bureaucrats RIGHT F**kING NOW.  When you crush their skulls with ax handles, don't feel sorry for those men.  They ignored 30 years worth of warnings.  They're wicked men.  They come from the devil to dostroy mankind.  Nothing less.  No matter how many cynical prepsters on Wall Street you have to snuff, no matter how fat hedge fund managers yoiu have to decapitate in front of their families and friends, so you can stick the head on a pike at the entrance to Wall, don't offer a moment's sympathy.  They are in the guillotine as a result of their own actions.  We told them to stop day after day, month after month, year after year.  But what did they do?  The got more savage, saucy, and insolent day-after-day.  The man in the $12,000 suit with the $10 million private jet has no humanity you can appeal to.  The only safe thing for our survival is to kill him...and the of course, we kill his family to the last so there will be no grudges to settle.

I'm sorry, you should have listened to Jimmeh Cawtah in 1979 when he told you to conserve energy and reject your materialist values.  But noooooo.  You had to have your Reagan, your Clinton, your Bushes, and your Obama.  And now we're really F88ked and we're not going to get them out of power without the most horrifying bloodshed we've soon since the American Civil War.  Now, the Ten Commandments say "thou shalt not kill," but what are we going to do when we live in such a demoralized society that fail to kill all in high politics and big business interferes with our ability to follow the other nine commandments.

We have work to do.  Come right this way....

I'd give it about at least 4 more years until inflation hits. Actually, I don't think anyone truly knows when it's going to hit the fan. Inflation could hit 4 years from now, 10 years from now, or next month! But when it does, it's gonna be ugly!  :-\\ :-\\

Noticed I changed my prediction from 3 year or less to 4 years or more!  ;D

The only thing holding up the dollar is the petrodollar agreement.  Most people don't really understand it or even know about it, but to sum it up, when the US moved off the gold standard they made an agreement with the OPEC nations (basically the Middle East) to provide military protection if their oil fields were ever threatened.  In exchange, all oil produced by OPEC nations must be sold in US dollars.  So we basically moved from a gold standard to an oil standard, which is why the US dollar was (and is for now) the world's reserve currency.  This also allows the Federal Reserve to print money out of thin air.  Here's a good video about it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZDQb2H3xZI

When the US loses the petrodollar (which is slowly happening due to irresponsible money printing by the Fed), we will see hyperinflation (and war).

That.  The dude knows how to rant.

(Max, sometimes it occurs to me that if you're any good at schmoozing, you could probably just pick a party, volunteer with the local party organization, and work your way up.  With your rhetorical skills and intelligence, you could probably get elected to office at least at the municipal/school board level, which would be a steady job with decent benefits, and you're young enough you might have the option of going higher if you were willing to sell out to the Democrats.  I think I'm pretty good at writing and rhetoric, but I really do think you're better at than I am.  The world's safe from me, because I suck at schmoozing.)

But back to economics.  I'll never be one of the rich kids of Instagram, but the problem with trying it his way is that it's just as unsustainable as my way.  It doesn't matter whether you have social security funded by taxing your generation's descendents to the Nth degree or by printing money out of thin air.  It doesn't matter whether you have a defined-benefit pension plan either -- just what did you think the defined benefit pension plans were invested in, if not the same damn stocks and bonds your 401(k) is invested in?

In lieu of rhetoric, I'll just let Denis Leary say it for me.  (All you Xers, get outa the room.  This is for the Millennials, even if most of 'em don't remember Denis Leary and don't realize the war he was joking about was the 1991 Gulf War.)  Apart from being off by a decade, he got most of what my post-collegiate life was like.  I was one of the lucky ones!  I managed to dodge the wars and am only at the stage where I have to deal with stress.  I'm still waiting on the crack; but for the grace of Celestia, there go I.

nsJ8j_UrTTM

Something for the kids...

As an Xer, my plan's to do what the Boomers did.  When the hippies became yuppies, they didn't sell out, they bought in.  My response to the risk of high inflation is to be prepared to sell everything, short Treasuries, go long commodities, and hope to come out the other side with the same buying power I had when I went in.  In that, I freely cede the moral high ground to ... everybody.  But I do so knowing that if the world burns, I burn with it.

Semi-serious economic commentary on QE3: LOLFED: I Can Haz Bazooka?

Serious commentary:  If you're under 30, the economy right now is like a coin balanced on its edge.  Whether you bet on heads or tails won't change the outcome.  You might, if you're lucky enough and pay enough attention to the vibrations on the table, be able to place a winning bet before the coin actually falls over and all bets are off.  The house might not pay you your winnings; it might be burned down by Max's angry mob before it gets the chance, and if someone breaks the bank, the house won't be able to pay you your winnings even if Max's mob never shows up.  But as long as you're stuck in the casino, why not play a few hands?  You might even like the game.

Whether you like the game or not, as long the casino doesn't burn down, the sooner you start playing, the sooner you can leave.  Pay yourself first; your employer won't.

Well, it's nice to hear a compliment now and again.  The problem with me and schmoozing is I don't want to sell anybody anything.  I'm more of a Jeremiah.  The Left Behind guys took all the openings for Biblical Prophet and how can anybody get left behind if nobody gets saved?  The worst assumption a Calvinist can make is his own salvation.

As for hyperinflation, I say buy gold.  When the world economy totally sh*ts the bed, you can always eat your gold!

True.  So get on the pundit circuit.  (Problem there is that it'd take schmoozing.)  The last time the Democrats tried to come up with someone who could rant like Limbeck, they failed pretty hard, in large part because they didn't understand the art of the rant.  Franken got a Senate seat out of it, and Maddow got an MSNBC gig, though, so it wasn't a total loss for the volunteers.  Find a politician you can support (might even be a third party, even one who's interests would be pretty much diametrically opposed to mine) volunteer for his/her campaign, and instead of aiming for elected office, consider becoming a speechwriter or digging out talking points.  Your analytical and rhetorical skills could nail either of those jobs down cold.  Nice work if you can get it, you get a shot at a new gig every couple of years, and in the meantime, have some cool people to hang around with.

Serious part over :)

As for hyperinflation, I say buy gold.  When the world economy totally sh*ts the bed, you can always eat your gold!
:)

In any emergency, always keep a supply of the three precious metals:  gold, silver, and lead, because the first two make lousy bullets!  (And if things really go to hell and you have enough of the third, you can still get all the gold and silver you want.)

Capitalism sinking like the Titanic.

You forgot "By the way, I think everyone agrees that capitalism doesn't work"

(Given the box office flop that Part I turned out to be, I'm amazed not only that they went for Part II, but that they did so before everyone had forgotten about Part I.  I really thought the project was dead...  Meh, it's their money, they knew what they were getting into, I'll let 'em have eight bucks for the lulz.)

Based on my amateur research on the internet, hyperinflation is possible in the US, but highly unlikely, at least for now. The Fed might be printing money, but it's just sitting there in the vaults at banks or in the computers at banks ( ;D) and not in circulation in the economy yet. Which makes hyperinflation unlikely as of now.
