Yeah I am a crossing guard and a lot of people have hip-hop booming in their cars. Its like I am living the core 00's all over again when  I hear those cars booming with their hip-hop music. All those people going by me in their cars are in their 20's and 30's and did go through when hip-hop was dominant in the 2000's.

I still don't see that happening unless you consider Lil. Wayne and Drake junk a part of rap. 8-P But really, Rap is dead in the mainstream sense. That's final. Rap in general isn't dead because there's loads of great underground stuff I listen to that's great. But mainstream speaking, Rap has been dead for years. It just hasn't been in for a long time. I don't see it increasing in popularity anytime soon. It's mostly about Electro and Dubstep now and Dubstep get's blasted in people cars a lot more. I agree Rap has been mostly dead since mid 2005. Lil Wayne like him or not was pretty popular in 2008 with the Top 40 crowd and hard-core fans of hip-hop. I personally don't see what was so great about him at the time. Keep in mind I live in New Jersey and hip-hop probably still has its following here since NYC is the birthplace of hip-hop. NYC is close to NJ so that may have something to do with hip-hop being popular where I live. I'm sure there is great underground stuff like you said.

Yeah I remember complaining about rap in 2005 that it was everywhere back then. I didn't mind some of the rap back then but did it have to be the monster popularity that it had at that time? Your right it pretty much overrepresented the music scene back in the core 00's.

The thing is I don't see heavy listeners of hip-hop back in the mid '00s switching to Taylor Swift and Carly Rae Jepsen because that's whats "in" today.  There is some great hip-hop today, even mainstream stuff, you just don't hear it on Top 40 radio. Urban radio stations are still playing it and it sounds way better than it did just a couple years ago.  Hip-hop went through a lull in 2010 and early 2011 but this year has is finally sounding good again.  I still listen to hip-hop as my primary genre because that is what I grew up on and its what I still like.  We have seen this before - the jazz era ended in the mid-1950s but jazz-based songs were popular with their crowd well into the 1970s as they aged.

The Suger Hill Gang is wack IMO. Hip Hop was around before they came along. My father lived in the Bronx (birth of hip hop) and was a Dj in the late 70s/early 80s.

To me "mainstream hip hop" is anything that gets played on Urban radio. "Crossover" is the stuff that gets played on Top 40 radio.

With that said, in terms of quality, mainstream hip hop is in the best shape it's been in since the early 00s. During the 2000s (especially from 2005-2011), the popular hip hop was all about meaningless songs with catchy hooks and simple lyrics about money, cars, clothes and "hoes". That seems to be changing with the success of artists like J. Cole, Big KRIT and especially Kendrick Lamar.

Yeah, pretty much, they (the group Karmin) just became popular earlier this year. So yes, they are new.

They were already on Youtube years before 2012 though, or at least I think.

I think A$AP Rocky will bring a revival of hip-hop, and I think we'll be hearing a lot of him over the next few years. His new album is pretty good, and a lot of songs have the Chopped & Screwed style, something I haven't heard in awhile.
