Subject: Dubstep is the new NU -METAL
Written By: thenewtattoo on 08/17/12 at 11:04 am
Anyone notice how the Nu Metal explosion of 99- 2003 is similar to the dubstep explosion.
I just saw a k mart ad with dubstep in it. When trends are manipulated, exploited, and overused
it ends up like Nu- Metal Dubstep is walking on eggshells at this point.

Nu Metal was really mainstream, selled millions of albums, had many top 40 hits, not like dubstep which is still underground. Only semi-famous dubstep artist is Skrillex. People who listen to dubstep are mostly from the rave subculture and not top 40 folks.

Ok I saw that commercial, I did some research on Dub-step, it is an offspin of drum and bass which incoporates various elements, glitch, screamo, reggae, hip-hop etc. Honestly the asthetic of is it strange, not my personal taste as I'm not into metallic colors, and neon mixed together. Also, it seems to be a fad with really young kids or younger people, or maybe some people who are into techno, hip-hop, or even goth or something. I personally think it's terrible and don't really see the appeal to it, but maybe because I'm already way past that demographic. :)

Dubstep is not really my style of music. I've never even heard of Nu Metal, but I doubt I would play favoritism to it either.

I never really look at the top 40 to be perfectly honest, and I rarely watch TV. XD

I was 15 in 2000, and Limp Bizkits "Break Stuff" and "My Generation" were huge as hell. Today, "Party Rock Anthem" is as big, if not bigger than those two Limp Bizkit songs.

This. If it's 4/4 time and easily danceable, it's probably electro. Dubstep requires a breakbeat, not a steady beat, which makes it inherently harder to dance to. (You have to know when the bass is about to drop to know when to jump/spin/etc.)
If it sounds like robots dancing, it's on the electro side of the line. If it sounds robots mating or blowing up cities (or both at the same time), it's on the dubstep side of the line.
