Subject: Any retroworldnow users?

Any users of the Retroworldnow forum? It closed due to being too costly, and I'd like to contact the owner, Brian (a Mod here) about helping him fund it, but he hasn't been online here in a month..If there's any members of that forum I'd love if you could help me.

It wasn't to bash here, it was to discuss a topic that is banned here and I enjoyed the place.

Well there's this one guy who's been posting in your other thread, but he seems like he's kind of an asshole. ::)

Or you could see if that guy who raised all the money for the Corey Haim star will help you fund it.

Donnie Darko really sent you guys over the edge...Seriously...I ask about another forum and you guys accuse me of being the guy who ran it. You attack pretty much ANY pop culture thread of being decadeology at this point and now this forum has dwindled to a small group of people who have been on here for years who are all friends. You let one Darko's trolling create an obsessive, bizarre hatred of a topic that, if not taken to extremes, has merit, and you have scared away people from wanting to post, out of fear of being mocked or called decadeologists, even if they are not Decadeologists. The world is not black and white; It is not either "SOMEONE IS ONLY A DECADEOLOGIST WHO WANTS TO COMPARE 1900 TO 1975" nor is it "DECADEOLOGY IS THE MOST HORRIBLE TOPIC EVER IN HISTORY OMG DISCO BEATS OMG BACK SLAP EACH OTHER AND INSULT NEWBIES".
It's can be a legit line of discussion as long as people aren't stupid about it. The fact is, pop culture changes even over small periods of time. The goddamn 60s are perfect evidence of almost all facets of pop culture getting a radical facelift in just under a decade. Comparing 1900 to 1975 is stupid. Or asking how 1990 was like 1940 is stupid. But comparing more focused, more minute changes can be fascinating. Comparing say, how pop culture changed between 1960 and 1969 can be interesting. Or how the early 1970s, still with heavy Hippie influences, differed from mid decade, colored by platforms, punk, and disco.
If I'm not mistaken, this forum is about pop culture...I would think how pop culture changes over time would be a part of it. If someone makes a stupid thread comparing 1880 to 1954, delete or lock it. If Donnie Darko reappears, or someone spams with ridiculous topics, simply ban them. Banning an entire line of discussion, even when it might have merits, is self defeating I think.

I think that Decadeology is less popular in 2012 than it was, say in 2009.

Pop culture never changes. Never. Ever. In fact, there is no real reason to discuss pop culture of the past except for DECADEOLOGY NOSTALGIA LOVE. I think all subforums which deal with decades before this decade should be shut down because the only reason a person would want to discuss aspects of specific decades like the 1970s or 1980s is out of nostalgia, which is not allowed in the inthe00s.com clique, and it's basically a form of decadeology to discuss any other time except our own, or even to consider that pop culture and society changes as time goes by. It's all blasphemy, and really, we should only discuss things in the clique centric sections.

You're really going to make me do this, aren't you. You're going to make me break out the 99pt bold caps to get my point across.
(Sigh) Fine. Here goes:
FOR PETE'S SAKE, LIGHTEN UP ALREADY!!!!!
You guys are the ones who get your panties in a collective knot over ANYTHING perceived as "Decadeology" because Donnie Darko spammed the forum and other members made stupid threads. Maybe you guys are the ones who should lighten up a bit and realize that what you call "Decadeology" doesn't have to be stupid or narrow or ridiculous. You don't have to go to minuta and compare "How was 1972 like 1973?" You could just do something more like, comparing the early 70s to the mid 70s in terms of pop culture, or like the early 60s to the late 60s, and so on. It doesn't have to be weird like "How was 1990 like 1992?" kind of crap. It's not all black and white, you know?

Yes, Decadeology, like all things, is best in moderation. I got into it in the beginning, and I'll confess to my own sins as being one of the people who probably took it too far back in the day, but by the time Donnie was banned I too was getting tired of the constant onslaught of threads. As far as this board goes, yeah there's certainly plenty of Decadeology bashing, but it never really bothered me because I assumed it was aimed more at the topic's excesses as opposed to any basic discussion of the topic itself. After all, in its mildest form, even recent threads like "What's your favorite year of the 90's" could be considered "Decadeology".
I liked RWN, and I had hoped it would last a while, but due to its size, I had my doubts. The majority of smaller forums don't make it.

This forum will probably also die some day due to the clique members who are absolutely narrow-minded, ignorant and intolerant. If positing stupid gifs, photos or big sized letters is everything you got as an argument, this is very sad.

In spite of what you may think, I'm not opposed to decadeology. If you want to analyze the 1970s or the 1990s, go ahead. If you want to resurrect Retroworldnow, go ahead. I won't be bothering you. Heck, I'm not even opposed to a decadeology subforum - but it's Chucky's board, and it's Chucky's rules.

For me the point of it is to better understand periods in history I like that happened either before I was born, or were too young to understand...The post war era through to 9/11 as a whole was one of the most radical periods in history in terms of rapid change...The era gave birth to what we call pop culture, I think, and each decade--the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s--is incredibly interesting and all of them are VERY different in terms of pop culture.
Where decadeology, as it's called, comes in, IMO, is it helps me at least understand the pop culture changes that occur within the decades themselves. And as anyone who lived through any decade knows, a decade's pop culture does change throughout the period of it. It helps me better understand periods in history I didn't get to experience on a human level, rather than watching movies. I suppose I like it because I see it as sort of sociology or a kind of pop cultural anthropology, which I find interesting. I think certain periods could even be broken down into cultural 'decades' or periods where pop culture sort of crosses decades (because narrowing down pop culture, which is organic, into "1980s" pop culture, or "1990s pop culture") is a bit restrictive. I made a thread once about the general pop culture in the period encompassing the late 80s to around 1992 or 1993 and most people agreed, with their own memories, that that period was sort of it's own time pop culture wise. And none of them were decadeologists as far as I am aware.
Recognizing changes in pop culture, trying to chart the changes as they happened, etc, doesn't mean you'll spam the forum with "HOW WAS 1860 LIKE 1982?" or some other garbage like that. But there are more reasonable things. Look at the show Mad Men for example, it shows a time in the 1960s most had forgotten--The early 60s, before the Beatles and Vietnam--as being almost an utterly different world from the Woodstock era.
People posted pictures and gifs calling me a "troll", but I am not spamming here. I'm not trolling or derailing any thread; I am speaking in one I created. I'm stating my opinion. I'm not trying to be humorless about it and perhaps the troll gifs were a joke, but I just think we could and should discuss this topic in a serious fashion or at least in a way where it doesn't break down to gifs and insults.

I do agree with you that sociology is interesting and it shouldn't be confused with "decadeology" (which doesn't exist).
I really don't think anyone has called YOU a troll. You are a member and you are stating your opinion which you have every right to do. I think most people are calling people (i.e. FormerMember) who are NOT members who spam the boards telling us how much they don't like the boards-which doesn't make any sense since they are ALWAYS here posting. My question is if they don't like it, then why be here?

Forums typically die because members feel no connection to it. Looks like there are people here that still feel connected.
FYI, calling people narrow-minded, ignorant, and intolerant is not the best way to make friends and influence people. There are classes you can take to help you with softskills.
And argument, for arguments sake, is useless.

Oddly enough, my "stupid gif" wasn't even targeting decadeology. :D
(It was targeting how heated this discussion started getting)
For me both sociology and decadeology are things I have no interest in, but I am not against them either.
And to decadeology's defense, at least no one's constantly tried to get me to talk about it(unlike sports fans).

I am very interested in sociology. But I don't consider a conversation about Britney Spears or skinny jeans to quite merit that term. If there is a legitimate topic, I'm happy to post in it. But half of the "decadeology" topics seem too redundant. We've already had those conversations before.

I am very interested in sociology. But I don't consider a conversation about Britney Spears or skinny jeans to quite merit that term. If there is a legitimate topic, I'm happy to post in it. But half of the "decadeology" topics seem too redundant. We've already had those conversations before.
I'll play Devil's Advocate here. If it's important enough for Harris Interactive (PDF, 2006) and other marketing companies to spend hundreds of millions researching it, in order to get their hands on the billions of advertising dollars at stake, in order to sell $200-300B of product, it's probably worth a thread or two. For more information, watch Merchants of Cool or read the transcript. That documentary is from 2001 - and reflects marketing strategies that are (gasp!) a decade old.
To bring that into the present decade, there's a reason Facebook went public last month with a $100B valuation. I think the company is grossly overvalued at that price, but it's clearly worth something, and it ain't because of Farmville.
Decades don't matter, but generations do, and generational cultural shifts are real, predictable, and actionable phenomena. There's a reason why 1984's rebellious-metal-rockers Twisted Sister are singing jingles for Stanley Steemer in 2012.

...and it's because all those kids who "Weren't Gonna Take It Anymore" finally found out "What They Wanted To Do With Their Lives". Apparently, they were going to buy houses and be too busy to properly clean their carpets, but at least now we know.

Any similarity between my enjoyment of certain TV show and real life is entirely a result of my own free will. It's definitely not brain slugs all the way down.

I did see a little of it, it's just that I'm not big on watching TV(more likely to watch a DVD), so I never really went too far on that series.

If you want a site like retro world now, then you should check out this totally affordable web hosting site I'm apart of. Its only like $10 a month plus its using a new web address format technology that will replace the dot com format eventually.
Building a website is super easy with this service too here is where you can find out more info http://makealivingonlinerightnow.ws.
Then we can go back to retroworldnow and get serious about decades again. I love comparing history and in the 00's was like a fix, but retroworldnow seemed like THE place for all things related to pop culture from different eras. I hope my webhosting company will help.
