Subject: I wanted to throw in my two cents ...

... but Canada is taking them away!
News Story: Canadian Pennies to be eliminated
I may not be a big fan of getting pennies in change, but this means that now they will round up cents which will lead to people getting more in change then they should be getting. Will it make things more confusing, or easier? Only time will tell, I s'pose

We've had this system for years now. The copper one- and two-cent coins were discontinued in 1991 due to the metal exceeding face value and withdrawn from circulation. The smallest we have is 5 cents ... and that is getting rarer. If the total ends in 1 or 2 cents ... it is rounded down. 3 cents or 4 ... rounded up.

There's talk from time to time of eliminating U.S. pennies. There's too much investment in the $.99 figure in American consumer psychology. That's one of numerous reasons it won't happen.
My pennies pile up in jars until I take them to the bank or the penny changer machine at the grocery store and get ten or twenty dollars in bills. I do this every few years, usually when I'm strapped for cash! It's a desperate man's savings bond!
;D

No more pennies, so they can round things up to the nearest nickel, and it does add up.

I enjoy collecting pennies, every few months my jar gets filled up and I wrap them up to take them to the bank.

What I've never understood is, why do they always tack on that extra 9/10th of a cent at gas stations? ???

I like to consider myself an expert on the penny. Actually, the U.S. -as well as Canada- do not have the "penny", they have the "cent." That being said, I always call them pennies. :D ;D ;D ;D
As a coin collector, pennies can be valuable. I have sold one penny for over $10 and another for over $20. :o :o :o :o It is true. There are some pennies that can go for over a grand or two.
A coin will have 3 different values: face value-in this case 1¢; melt value-older ones made out of copper are worth a lot more than the ones made today out of a zinc alloy; and historical value-this is where the REAL value comes into the play.
If Canada (or the U.S.) were to eliminate the lowly penny, it could actually increase the value of it. Since they won't be manufactured anymore, it would make them more collectible.

That's always baffled me, too; how much would you pay for exactly one gallon of gas? You can't cut a penny into ten pieces and submit only nine of them; U.S. currency doesn't work that way.

I'm guessing the main reason for that was to make the price seem lower, like 99 cents vs. $1.00.

Yeah, I guess that is one way to look at it... although you can pay exactly 99 cents.

That would be great in the whole Eurozone, too. 1 cents, 2 cents... those coins are annoying and few countries that have the Euro have already taken them away.

At least in the country where I live - THAT was always the reason 8)

It probably made more of a difference in the past, when gas was usually below $1.00 a gallon.

Yeah but what's the difference?
