Subject: Foreign Language songs in the mainstream (2010s)
Written By: whistledog on 03/29/12 at 7:27 pm
I know in many countries where English is not the first language, it is common for non English songs to be hits, but in areas like North America, Australia and the United Kingdom, it is rare, but I am seeing more and more instances of it becoming popular here in the 2010s. Some examples ...
Michel Teló - Ai Se Eu Te Pego
Already #1 hit in several parts of Europe for this Brazilian singer, it this week has now risen to #38 in Canada, before it has even charted in the UK

Yolanda Be Cool and D Cup - We Speak No Americano
A #1 hit in 2010 across most of Europe including the UK, and also peaked at #4 in Australia, #16 in Canada and #29 in the US

Mika - Elle Me Dit
This reached #1 in France, #9 in Belgium, #16 in Switzerland and #63 in Canada in late 2011, and just this week, has re-charted in Canada at #84. Yes, the same Mika of 'Grace Kelly' fame

Stromae - Alors on Danse
In 2010, this was #1 in Several parts of Europe, #25 in the UK and #46 in Canada. I still sometimes hear it on the radio
