I know its kind of like asking you what year defined the 00's ,90's,80's etc. Sorry guys, I was just watching VH1's The Greatest songs of the 00's. After looking back, boy has society changed.....

Usually by the '2' year we have a good idea of what the 'feel' of the decade is going to feel like. And by the '3' year, the traces of the previous decade is pretty much gone.

I felt that 2003 to 2005 really defined the 00s. Will 2012 be one of the defining years of the 10s? Sometimes we only know when we look back on the decade.

But if I had to guess, I think 2013 will be when the 10s decade is 'in full gear'.

I think you're asking what year will the '10s culture peak, here's what years I think each decade's pop culture most represents the overall feel of the decade.
the '60s - 1967 summer of love, psychedelica, sgt. pepper, hippies
the '70s -  1976 disco, punk, soft rock, bicentennial year
the '80s - 1984 new wave, early hair metal, MTV, teen movies
the '90s - 1993/94 grunge, gangsta rap, eurodance, slackers
the '00s - 2005 crunk/dirty south rap, emo, social media

Like 80sfan said, the '10s "feel" should already be coming in usually by around the late part of the '1' year/'2' year, I can already tell you OWS is one of the defining aspects of the '10s, we'll see it's further effects on US culture and politics in 2012.

I guess now we have social media sites because a long time ago you never had anyone to talk to via Twitter or Facebook, now that these are well into bloom, people all around the world are doing it. And plus we have Skype video phone like the Jetsons used to have in the cartoon when talking to someone face to face.

It won't define the decade, still too early. But it will be quite different from 2010 and 2011.

No, but it will start to seem different from the 2000s even more.

I guess once we get into the middle of the decade,things will start to happen.

I hope not...I wish that things would go fine with me on 2012. Though it may be hard since I lost someone on Christmas Day. :\'(

2008 was okay.

2009 and 2010 were terrible years for me personally and I'm glad they're over. Especially 2009, which was the worse year of my life!

So how is 2012 treating you so far now?

In terms of music, the decade has been defined since 2008 and we had a full feel of what the decade would be like since then. Also adding the recession from 08', we also have a hint and feel of the culture of the 10s since then too. The unemployment rate is far more higher now vs the 00s  because of i so that is one thing that defines the decade. I don't think we will see a peak til' 2013 or so and that also depends if music is going to change at all throughout the 10s.

It's been an ok half of 2012, I wouldn't say it's been great.

Yes 2008 is when Electropop  and Facebook    & twitter  got mainstream.  We are still using them today so it is a 2008 defined culture being redefined in the 2010s

It's only conjecture. I can't be sure about much concerning several years into the future.  ;)

Electropop of the late 00s/early 10s will probably have a lifespan similar to the teen pop of the late 90s/early 00s I am assuming.

I mean its not dead though  and  teen pop was dead by late 2002
the last song that was teen pop of 02 was Nnsync's Girlfriend

This is something I have noticed too, teen pop was already on it's way out by late '01, transitioning to urban pop/R&B.
The electronic dance music explosion that started in late '08 is still going strong, the one new trend I've noticed is dance-pop songs having dubstep breaks in them(Where Have You Been by Rihanna is a good example).

Which means Dance music will be the template for the rest of the decade. I mean if its showing no signs of dying then it will not.  Unless we have a Nirvana type moment with something that makes us look @ dance music  in a  negative way. But yeah  even Spears with her 2001 album had urban elements to it  . The full shift from Teen pop to Rap urban domination was completed by mid 2003

True. Personally, I see it going down a path similar to teen pop. People are going to get tired of it eventually.

I doubt thats going to happen anytime soon.  That point we will come across eventually but not anytime soon.
However its very interesting to speculate how 2010s pop culture is going to end up  pop wise .

For all we know the 2010s may very well be a "hipster decade"  ;D

I think the 2010's will show people how we view technology today compared to 30 years ago when you could watch television with rabbit ears and a remote control but today you could watch tv on your home computer. Just about everything today has been made simpler for us, the way we watch tv, the way we shop and the way we listen to music.
